Not the disaster they make it out to be. (by nsterjo)
Having read the worst reviews about this film, I went into the cinema expecting to be bored and annoyed by what they are calling a disaster and a flop. However, even though I sincerely do not expect anything great from Shyamalan at this point, I found it a bit hard to believe that Will Smith would fall so low, so suddenly and make a very bad movie. I wanted to decide for myself and I am glad I did. The film was quite enjoyable, it had a fair amount of action and emotion, balancing the two quite well. It is by no means a great movie, the likes of which we're used to expect from Will Smith, <more>
but this is not his movie, it's Jayden's and it's not a bad one for the younger Smith. Of course, he's not too mature as an actor, but if you don't expect too much from him and the whole thing, you don't get disappointed. I believe the whole bad feedback about this movie comes from the fact that it was directed by Shyamalan and that Smith senior was not the main star. If you get past the fact that Shyamalan's previous offerings were simply horrible and alleviate the pressure of performing as a blockbuster, you'll find that this was actually a decent movie. I would rate it 7 out of 10, but because I feel so many people out there have been unfair to it, I will give it a full 10, just for the heck of it.
Good Movie -- Bad Reviews Are Full of Crap (by draconis50)
I have no idea who is sending these bad reviews, nor where their expectations come from, but my wife and I just saw this movie, and both of us thought it was quite good. The acting was NOT "wooden" as one review I read stated. The characters are at times SUPPOSED TO BE rather stiff. And both Jaden and Will Smith turned in good performances. If you didn't like them, then it was the character you did not like, because they portrayed the characters well. At times I did not like them, either, but that was the CHARACTER and the WRITING, but NOT the acting. The special effects were <more>
quite good, as well. And the production design was highly imaginative and not the usual fare. All in all, this was a GOOD movie, and one I would recommend. If you have not seen it yet, then GO SEE IT WITH AN OPEN MIND and be your own judge.
I just read a review saying that Will Smith didn't show enough emotion, and that the movie wasn't funny enough.....WHAT TRAILER WERE YOU WATCHING! Will plays the prime commander who's rise to fame was entirely based off of his ability to bypass the emotion of fear! How did you think he was gonna act? Did you expect Carlton to pop on screen, doing his shuffle around Will and Jaden crying on the bathroom floor of a spaceship? People who don't like this movie either can't look past Jaden growing up rich, refuse to believe that more than just one member of a family is capable <more>
of being talented, or are on a bandwagon on it's way to the parade. Think I'm wrong? Read the reviews, then watch the movie! The last review I read said, "I want my 3 hours back!". Yea, OK. Now check the running time.....It's not even 2 hours! After earth has smooth pacing, a clear storyline, a good plot, good FX, and good acting! I have never in my life been so opposed to what the common consensus on a movie was. I am 100% sure that this movie was the target of a smear campaign. Do not fall for it! If you ever wanted to watch this movie, go and watch it. Do not be despaired. It's good, through and through.
I loved this film. It's original. And I am a science fiction junkie. Why the hate? I left the theatre full of praise for the script, directing, acting, visual effects - I thought it was one of the best films this year. In fact the theatre was full. Then when I got home I had to look twice at the comments on IMDb as I could not believe the reviews. And I am so glad I didn't read them before going. Is it "hate the Smith's" week? So much Science Fiction today rides on the back of series created many decades ago. And many seem to be effects driven and not story driven. I <more>
thought the spaceship, suits and gadgets were innovative. I hope there is a sequel to this piece of original work.
I thought it was a very good movie... (by johnny-curry25)
I saw the movie and rated it 9 out of 10 stars. As retired military, I could relate to the gruff military man who is also a father. I have to admit, I never babied my kids and yet, I like to think they understood I loved them.I am not so old that I cannot remember the anguish of attempting to pass from boyhood to manhood. I would have thought so many could easily relate to this story. As for the casting and acting, my criteria is pretty simple...I'm not an actor and if you can do ten times better than me, I'm good! It seems to me if you want Shakespeare, go see a Broadway show! As a <more>
former military man, I also give a lot of points for effort...just for trying. I would love to know the backgrounds of so many of the reviewers that found this movie so awful! As they so proudly point out the failures of the director and actors, it would be great if they would share their supreme achievements in this world so I could compare and then truly appreciate the failures of Will and Jaden Smith.Someone wrote Kitai was too skinny and lanky and not believable for the role. People that join the military come from high school and many start off as puny. I joined the US Army at 18 and was 6 feet tall and weighed 139 pounds...skin and bones. However, I was tough and could run like the wind. Five months later, still only 18 I was a paratrooper in the army. Sergeants don't judge you on physical size but the size of the fight in you and they will train you to do anything if you are willing, fear notwithstanding. I was afraid a lot.The science fiction was good enough. Some reviewers complain that it is the same old science fiction all the time. The space travel and ship was something different for a change...someone complained. The weapons were different...someone complained..."why didn't they just use laser guns?". Clearly there, just, is no satisfying some people.I was pleased to notice many young people high school age in the theater and they seemed to follow Kitai's journey with much involvement and cheering and clapping for his victories. I think I can safely say they enjoyed the movie as much as I did. Because I want to go into a movie with no expectations, I always skip any movie review and go watch and judge a movie for myself. In my opinion, which is worth no more or less than yours, this was a very good movie. For me, I loved the story and the story telling. Coming of age, except on a really dangerous planet and your super-hard-to-please dad is watching and constantly barking orders . The science fiction was above average for me. The acting was believable for me, which is all I require. Again, a very good and highly entertaining movie.Have a good day!
It's OK to like this movie, despite the racially motivated pan in the New York Times (by jwardww)
You don't have to be Alberich to write for the New York Times, but it would seem that it helps. That's right, forsake all love for career gold. After Earth is a wonderful movie about parental love. That's all it is. Thrown in with the price of admission is an engrossing odyssey with excellent special effects, suspense and muscular, coming-of-age adventure. There could have been no other motive for the Times to bad mouth this movie, except the obvious one of racism. What perhaps made this film so irritating to the parochial Times critic was the celebratory portrayal of an African <more>
American as a leader and devoted father. Make a note of this: to win the praise of this moribund rag as a person of color you must play a bad mother, as Halle Berry did, a dirty cop, as Denzel Washington did or a Stepin Fetchit, as Morgan Freeman did on more than one occasion . So reader, every time you lay down your $2.50 for the New York Times, it will not be to join the well informed, but to support their malignant attempt to marginalize blacks.
The outpouring of hatred over this movie makes no sense. This week I had the opportunity to see four of the current big movies in the theatre and this was by far the best of them. The same petty arguments are being made by people that claim this is awful. Jaden Smith, M. Night, and even Will Smith. So I went in with very low expectations...I mean the film has a 4.7 rating right now which is atrocious. So thank you all for the meagre expectations because I thought the film was great. Not amazing, not life changing but great. Then again I have disagreed with the masses on an M. Night film <more>
before. I thought Lady In The Water was superbly brilliant. Then again this is also the guy that made The Happening, easily one of the worst films I've ever seen. Still I found this film to be entertaining, decently acted, very good special effects and a generally well made, well produced film. M. Night really is a brilliant story teller, we've seen it before with his successful movies and in my opinion his less than successful ones. Whether he hits or misses he tries very hard and I saw the fantastic imagination that went into this movie. Will Smith has always been THEE personified movie star. Nearly every film he made was a huge hit. The guy has an undeniable incredible charisma and yes he has a big ego but somehow it works for him. In this film he is almost a supporting actor. He spends nearly the entire film laid up and on a com headset. Still he brings a certain intensity to the role and is certainly believable as a man who has learnt to eliminate fear. I'm nearly as sick about hearing how much people hate Jaden Smith as I am about people hating Justin Bieber. I don't understand the hatred for the kid. Yes he has an ego, just like his Dad but I think he's reasonably talented, he is still pretty young to really know if he has the acting chops that his Dad has. I thought he actually did a great job in this film. He didn't show the ego that he tends to have in person and him and his Dad worked very well together. Both roles were solid and carried the film just right. Jaden was a full on action/sci-fi hero and it worked and was believable and bravo to him for that.Somewhere along the line M. Night Shyamalan became a joke and that's unfortunate. I don't really fully understand why he became such a joke. I mean, he has made a few stinkers...one horrendous stinker The Happening but he has also made some amazing films. I wouldn't put this into his amazing movies but I wouldn't put it anywhere near his stinkers. This was a great, entertaining, emotionally charged sci-fi flick and I enjoyed every minute of it. I admit I was caught into the M. Night hoopla and expected a twist ending but this one is just a straight forward mainstream adventure flick. One of the final scenes between father and son was near brilliant and almost brought tears to my eyes. The special effects were very well done and some of the monsters and beasts they created were epic in stature and should be looked at as being fun and well done. I guess I just don't understand the expectations people had from this. It seems that people have a real grudge against young entertainers like Jaden Smith but I am not one of them and I encourage you if you love sci-fi to watch this and simply enjoy it. 8/10
If you know what being in the moment means, or like sci fi, then watch this film! (by rich-helps)
I liked this movie. I nearly didn't go to watch it because of the sea of bad reviews but then I remembered I enjoyed 'the last air bender', by the same director. I also thought, I like getting lost in a sci-fi flick, I like Will Smith and I'm bored so off I went for a later showing. I was expecting drivel and to be bored stupid with no real mind stimulation at all... but this didn't happen. I'm not a writer or a major film buff so can't review too thoroughly here but I was entertained for the whole movie, had a tear in my eye at times and easily got lost in the <more>
universe that this film is set in. BUT! What I really liked about the movie and what bumped it up to 8 out of 10 is the message that the movie makers were clearly trying to get across. They succeeded and I don't want to spoil it for anyone but I certainly left the movie grounded in the moment and free of fear. I don't care if I don't sound cool or in the know like the other critics, any film, book or stimulus of any kind that helps free me from my mind in this way gets a massive thumbs up from me.
I would give it a 6.0 but 4.7 as it is right now is way too low (by claucrespo)
4.7, for real! are you saying twilight is better than this c'mon! OK, yes the movie have some big loopholes, yes they could have made really more interesting story, yes it is as predictable as it can possibly by, yes will smith is limited to a supporting role, yes the acting may not be academy award deserving, but the movie is still pretty watchable.I chose not so watch it because of the reviews, and I was bored as hell this weekend and a friend which shares my movie tastes went to see it without reading the reviews and he said it was at least entertaining, that got me curious, and out of <more>
curiosity and boredom I went to watch it. I have to admit that despite the stuff mentioned above and in other reviews it was entertaining.I think people was going to this movie waiting for other Avengers only to be as disappointed as I was with Iron man 3, but if you just want to see an entertaining movie with a good production, good CGI and a rather common story, instead of another Avatar, then I think this movie deserve at least 6/10 I'm giving it 8/10 just to try to boost the ratings a bit and because I actually like it I'm no movie critic so I rate based on how much I liked it, couldn't care less for the technical/critic part of the movie . I think 4.7 doesn't make it justice just filter IMDb for movies with 4.7 and you will see what I'm talking about.
