Finally, a decent slasher film (by moustasch1) |
I've been watching horror films for 50 years and have seen almost everything. Slasher films have left me almost completely bored the last few years. With the exception of The Collector there really hasn't been a decent slasher film since Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and the Nightmare films well, most of them .Almost all current slasher films are the same. 6 kids 5,8... name your number all go out to a party the woods, a haunted house...etc. and get killed in unusual ways by an unknown attacker. Boring. Bereavement changes all that. Without going into any detail here's a <more> |
The new gold standard.... (by sanjr1) |
Simply put, Stevan Mena's "Bereavement" is the new gold standard for Psycho films & looks to stay on top of the heap for a long while. I saw it last night at the NYC Horror Film Festival & cannot be more excited about a young talent such as Mena's. The film is a lean engine primed to shock it's audience & it does so not with reckless abandon but with slow dread. An amazing cast helps put the film over the top but it's the script & direction of said cast that puts this film in a league of it's own. I know there are haters out there that didn't <more> |
The Rebirth of True Horror (by SexiBuni86) |
This movie doesn't rely on cheap scares or excessive gore to grip the audience, it runs on the adrenaline of fear. The fear of Sutter, the blood-splattered face of true horror. Brett Rickaby takes insanity to a new level. He portrays Sutter with incredible depth and emotion, simultaneously invoking terror and empathy. Any one of us could be his victim; murdered not by a masked ghost or reanimated madman, but by a quiet pack-rat who keeps to himself. This killer, hidden in the comfort of a small town, is psychologically disturbed and sickeningly realistic. The fear of the Slaughter House, a <more> |
Scary Stab Fest! (by virginalbeauty) |
This film is highly recommended for those who like the old creepy guy doing creepy things to people in a creepy abandoned isolated place where no one can hear your screams. Reminiscent of Texas Chainsaw, High Tension, Hostel, Psycho, etc. 'Bereavement' is entertaining and bloody! I would love to see an unedited no holds barred version. From the reviews I've read, 'Bereavement' had a difficult time achieving an R-rating but finally got one and was able to release it to major theaters. Personally, I like my films uber rough and would have preferred more blood, boobs, and <more> |
Adult, layered, shocking and intense. (by hauntedwoods) |
I was a fan of Malevolence, but you don't need to see or know that film to enjoy this one; the links between the two films are more of a bonus to fans than an essential element of the storytelling. But kudos to the filmmakers for really getting into the psychology of how broken families/people make other broken people- and thoughtfully exploring the ways people are trapped..whether through isolation, by one's own demons, disabilities, or through another's evil, it's explored in every character. It's probably the best-shot horror film I've seen in years, and looks like <more> |
Much better if you know what it is (by ace61502) |
Did ANY of you prior reviewers realize this movie doesn't need an explanation because it IS an explanation? This movie is a prequel for the movie Malevolence. And a good one. The acting wasn't top billing actors take a look at the budget , but it wasn't the worst I've seen by far. Not sure how anyone could say there's no plot. It won't replace my favorite horror movie, but I did enjoy it. Either watch Malevolence first, or watch it knowing what it is. I can see how confusing and open ended it would seem not knowing that, especially since, as far as I saw, IMDb <more> |
old school horror (by trashgang) |
2012 didn't give me a good feeling about the current horror scene. Most of them are purely made for youngsters, others didn't even had anything scary and some used to much CGI. But now and then some gems do pop up. Let me say that this came in my hands, never heard of it but what a great flick this is.From shot one it had my full attention and I must say it was so until the last seconds, and the last seconds do end even after the end credits. It's simple, this is old school horror. I won't file it under slasher but comes close. The way it was filmed and edited did at the <more> |
