Plot: One of the less gruesome cannibal tales. A woman is searching for her missing sister and she finds hope in the folly of a dead hit-man who has a film on him. The film shows some sadistic torture and a brief cameo by her sister taken by a documentary film crew who obviously didn't make it out. She… Runtime: 92 min Release Date: 20 Mar 1980
This movie is a classic. Umberto Lenzi has made numerous movies about all kinds of things but the only good ones are Cannibal Ferox, Nightmare City well maybe that one isn't a classic, but it is a cheese classic and Eaten Alive. This one stars former porn actor Robert Kerman,Janet Agren, the beautiful Me Me Lai, Ivan Rassimov, and Mel Ferrer. Agren's character goes to some south east Pacific island to try to find her sister who ran off with a cult to the island. There she hooks up with Kerman's character and they head off into cannibal territory searching for her sister. When they <more>
find her she is brainwashed and all messed up in the head by Rassimov's character who is an entertaining Jim Jones type cult leader. They are caught up in a web of craziness as the fight for there lives against the cannibals and the cult. Rape, nudity, sex, and loads of grue: beheadings, entrail removal, cannibalistic mastectomy with a knife, dong chopping, animal violence, a guy gets his ear cut off and eaten in brutal detail and so on. Fans of gore, cannibals, or Italian exploitation should view this classic cannibal movie. In my view it comes in after Cannibal Holocaust, Cannibal Ferox and Jungle Holocust in that order.
Great film.....Better than Ferox and Holocaust. If you are in England get an import version. They have cut this film to ribbons.I first saw it on the Vampix video release and loved it....Then many years later upgraded to the EC DVD release. THIS IS THE BEST CANNIBAL FILM.....ferox is over rated and holocaust is good but not this good. The story concerns a Jimmy Jones like person.Who has moved his followers to jungle to exploit them. Me me Lay looks great in this film...As with all low budget films the acting is crap and some scenes have been seen before and re used in other cannibal films.
Better than it should be (by slayrrr666)
"Eaten Alive" is a slightly problematic if still enjoyable Italian cannibal entry.**SPOILERS**When a mysterious assassin dies in New York, Sheila Morris, Janet Agren is summoned by the police when a package carried by it is addressed to her long-lost sister. Learning that it's from a location in New Guinea, she hires Mark Butler, Robert Kerman an ex-soldier, to guide her through to her sister's location, eventually finding her sister, Diana Morris, Paola Senatore amongst a tribe of cannibals headed by Jonas Melvyn, Ivan Rassimov and has her in his control as well as <more>
the other natives as a punishing ruler. As the more time they spend in the village amongst his followers, the more they realize he's trying to usher in a special worldwide cult based on his followings and that he intends to murder and torture his way to his goals, they make plans to escape the savage tribe and back to civilization. The News: This wasn't all that bad of a film, and had some good stuff going for it. One of the main selling points is that, like most good exploitation films, there's a lot of scenes or topics present that give the film a really dirty and sleazy vibe to it. The fact that there's a ton of extreme gore in here is one area that it gets right, feeling suitably dirty at the best of times. This is helped out from the huge body count, as along with a series of stabbing or impaling with spears, there's a brutal decapitation, one is castrated with a huge machete, arms and legs are ripped off, there's a huge slew of dismembered and half-eaten bodies, some of which comes while they're still being feasted upon. None of these, compare to it's infamous scene, where two victims are, in graphic close-up detail, sliced open, dismembered, amputated, disemboweled and feasted upon. It's one of the strongest scenes in the film, and despite being borrowed, this double killing sequence is far stronger than anything else in the film and is still one of the strongest scenes in Italian horror cinema. The sight of the still conscious women lying on the bloodstained ground as their limbs are eaten in front of them, and after one of them has her breast graphically sliced off and consumed, leaves a satisfyingly nasty taste in the mouth. The later one a few seconds later, sliced open and with the ribs being cracked open with all the inner organs pulled out and devoured in extreme close-up is just as vicious and exploitative, making it a real double-treat of extreme matter. Sadly, we are also still treated to lots of animal snuff, the most vicious of all being a sickening scene of a monkey being fed to a python. There's a way to know that the monkey was fed to the python, and had not fallen from the trees which the film tries to make out, because a crudely painted bunch of leaves suddenly appears on the edge of the screen obviously covering up someone's arm pushing the monkey into the creature's jaws. Even more animal footage, of a crocodile being hacked up and a small lizard being stripped of it's flesh and devoured are just as sickening and are just plain unnecessary and tough to get into. Even some of the tribal maneuvers are quite extreme, as the footage of the scarring ceremony that the tribe undergoes and a later ritual, where the cult's leader presides over a series of native rituals that include a widow having sex with her three brothers-in-law on her dead husbands ashes is certainly among the more obscure rituals presented. The film also starts off a great bang, with the mysterious assassinations and following the perpetrator across various US landmarks manages for a really fun intro. The film does have a few problems with it, though. The biggest issue is with the fact that this one manages to borrow footage from two other entries in here, mainly the big butchery sequence but also a few insert shots of the cannibals and animal violence here and there. The fact is that the original effects that lead up to this footage are very good anyway and there was no need to cheapen the film with such an obvious bit of plagiarism, as the film quality noticeably changes during them. The cannibals on show are a motley bunch as well and have none of the authenticity of the tribes and look really weak. Most of them look like normal people blackened up, while the others are just adorned with exotic trinkets and clothes, not really looking all that exotic. These here are all that really hurt the film, beyond all the animal footage, but overall, it's still a fairly enjoyable entry in the genre. The Final Verdict: Though it's got a few problems to it, this is another solid addition to the long line of Italian cannibal entries. Recommended for those with a taste and tolerance for these kinds of films, a European horror aficionado or fans of sleaze, while those with little to no tolerance should heed caution with it.Rated UR/NC-17: Extreme Graphic Violence, graphic violence against animals, Full Nudity, several mild Sex Scenes and a Rape
Eaten Alive: 8 out of 10: I must have much lower standards for the Italian Cannibal films genre than almost any other. Those darn cheesy exploitative jungle pictures just keep putting a smile on my face.First the bad news like other films in the genre this movie has many scenes of animal cruelty. Now Eaten Alive's scenes are cribbed in the form of stock footage from other cannibal and Mondo extreme films. This still never excuses this remarkably unnecessary and disturbing footage. T hat aside this movie simply delivers the goods. The plot consists of a Jim Jones style cult complete <more>
with King Kong masks! out in the middle of a jungle surrounded by stone-age cannibals. The cult has been reading up on the Old Testament's naughty parts so we get the old brother in laws duty scene among other surprisingly graphic sex. And of course it's the jungle so only the guys wear shirts. .The acting has some better than expected performances cannibal film regular Robert Kerman as our prerequisite hero and Ivan Rassimov as the Jim Jones preacher and everyone else is at least watchable okay okay Janet Agren looks and acts coked to the gills the entire film and the other white female lead is an Italian porn actress but they are both naked for much of the movie and in my book that counts as "watchable" The over the top cannibal scenes are appropriately gory and graphic but it really is the bizarre twists I enjoyed. The Goldfinger paint job, the death by poison dart attacks at Rockefeller Plaza, sets that wouldn't be out of place in the original Star Trek, and of course the giant stone dildo of death. With enough footage to cause either an animal rights activist or a feminist a brain aneurism and Cannibal watching regulars a serious case of deja vu Eaten Alive is nevertheless an entertaining fun time.
CANNIBALS MEET RELIGIOUS FANATICS (by kirbylee70-599-526179)
I've never been a huge fan of the cannibal movies that were made for some time by Italian directors in the 70s and 80s. My first exposure with them if I'm not mistaken was MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY and it didn't make a lasting impression on me. The fact I'm not sure if that was the first one I saw should show that. Later I saw the infamous CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST which again didn't impress me. It wasn't until I saw THE GREEN INFERNO that I found a cannibal movie I actually enjoyed and that's saying something since I'm not an Eli Roth fan. Having the chance now to see <more>
EATEN ALIVE I can now say I've seen two films in the genre I felt were good. The movie opens at Niagara Falls of all places as a native from Borneo kills a man with a blow dart. Move to New York and he does the same again, first killing one man and then getting hit by a truck after killing a second. The police investigating the deaths contact Shelia Morris Janet Agren when a roll of 16mm film is found on the Bornean. On the film is footage of her missing sister Diana Paola Senatore . Professor Carter Mel Ferrer , who she contacts for help, tells her that Diana appears to have run off to join a cult located in New Guinea. Of course she heads out to retrieve her sister.Hiring a local mercenary named Mark Butler Robert Kerman to help her save her sister she learns about the cult. Led by the charismatic Jonas Ivan Rassimov the cult is a pain worshipping cult who follows his every command. As the pair travel upriver they are attacked by a group of cannibals who capture their guide and cut him apart to feast on. Avoiding capture themselves they are captured by the cult and taken to their compound where they are welcomed. Diana pledges allegiance to Jonas but secretly wants to escape. Unfortunately Shelia falls under his spell and wants to stay. Even though she learns that the three men who we saw die in the beginning were ex-cult members who escaped she still feels that Jonas is a leader worth following. Whether Mark and Diana can convince her to leave or not, whether the military will come in to rescue cult members before they can commit mass suicide and whether or not the cannibals just outside the compound can satiate their hunger is left to be seen before the end of the film.Movies in this genre were known for two things. The overflowing amount of gore they put on display and the inclusion of numerous scenes of actual killings of animals interspersed throughout the films. The success of films like MONDO CANE 1962 that showed shocking scenes like these but milder piqued the curiosity of film goers at the time and their inclusion in these films drew the ire of censors and the dollars of movie goers. This film offers plenty of those moments. A battle between a mongoose and a cobra while bets are placed, a python grasping a dying monkey who tries to escape, the beheading and gutting of a live alligator are just some of the moments included here. The gore moments are memorable as well for fans of special effects and those gruesome moments. Breasts being sliced off and eaten, a penis sliced off, guttings and more are on display in glorious color with plenty of dripping red fake blood and meaty looking flesh left behind where incisions take place. The cannibals are seen eating their kills, pulling out guts in from their victims, scenes that would stun a few years later in DAWN OF THE DEAD but were clearly shot for films like this one. What sets this movie apart from many in the genre is the amount of storytelling going on here. Most have some scientists searching for some miraculous jungle cure or sociologists looking for lost tribes in these films. The combination of cannibal movie with a Jim Jones/Jonestown style story offers something different here. The depth of story is far from what you'd normally expect. In addition to that the sets look much better than most. It was money well spent, especially the village where the cult is set up. While not as elaborate it made me think back to the city Marlon Brando's Col. Kurtz was set up at in APOCALYPSE NOW. They did a great job here on those sets. But let's not that forget that deep down this is an exploitation movie. That means you'll not only see plenty of blood being spilled but a decent amount of exposed flesh as well. Ceremonies in the camp tend to have topless females walking about. Shelia at one point is painted in gold. When attacked by cannibals clothes are the first things to go. A woman whose husband is killed is raped by his brothers to determine who she marries next. And as punishment one woman is sodomized by the main bad guy guard, Karan. If you go by drive-in critic Joe Bob Brigg's staples of drive-in movies the film features all three necessary items: breasts, beasts and blood. The movie was directed by Umbert Lenzi, a famous director on the Italian scene who made a name for himself directing police dramas, horror films and at least three of the most famous cannibal films in the genre: THE MAN FROM DEEP RIVER, this film and CANNIBAL FEROX. In an interview included in the extras he notes that many credit Ruggero Deodata as the inventor of the Italian cannibal film for his CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST this film was actually released before that one. I've been singing the praises of Severin for several films they've just released and I'll have to include this one as well. This is the first time the film has been remastered for hi-def and it shows it. The film looks much better than one would expect for what they had to begin with. In addition to that they've included plenty of extras that when combined run longer than the actual movie itself. Included are WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE the interview with Lenzo, ME ME LAI BITES BACK a documentary on the actress who was known as the Queen of Cannibal Moves, THE SECT OF PURIFICATION an interview with production designer Antonello Geleng, archive interviews with Ivan Rassimov and Robert Kerman and a 2013 Q&A with the late Lenzi at the Festival of Fantastic Films, UK. Lenzi fans will want to have this version of the film in their collection. Horror fans and cannibal movie fans should grab this one up as fast as possible. Those who are curious about the films would do well to start with this one as it not only offers up everything the genre had to offer but has plenty of story as well. It's not a movie that the squeamish will want to watch but if you love horror like this by all means give it a try.
