The first time I create a review is to say this movie is impressive. Is not a horror movie until the last moment. You get anxious with this movie. I love it.
A brilliant underrated movie (by dfcurran)
First of all the acting and therefore the direction are perfect. That the four young actors can come off as a loving family proves brilliance. The pace is easy but never boring. And there are scenes to get your heart going. This is a great horror movie for the entire family with minimal violence.
Slow horror flick that will engage you till the end! (by abd-75227)
I really loved the acting, story and screenplay of this movie. It looks more traditional and not typical jump scares in darkness. I highly recommend this movie for those who just want to focus on the story flow with calmness.
Refreshing Horror (by Dark_Lord_Mark)
I am a fan of Horror. So maybe I am a bit enthusiastic, more so than others.I must say our house is scary. I am not familiar with anyone but Thomas Mann, the main star, but the director did an excellent job of pacing.I am not sure if this was due to the budget, but this movie has what modern horrors lack; a buildup. I went into the movie blind, as always, and was not sure if this was a sci-fi movie, a horror or something in-between.From the atmosphere, I got hints of something sinister but was never sure until 2/3's into the movie. The movie feels small budget but that's this movies <more>
advantage, as the atmosphere feels real...if that makes sense. The actors feel like kids and a new adult parent, with tragedy being the atmosphere. The characters felt realistic. I think Thomas Mann reminds me of a young Tom Hanks, very innocent looking, but when given a role, he shines. The movie was scary to me, a bit creepy. I loved the minimum use of CGI, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS. It starts to feel a bit sci-fi'ish but than gathers itself and builds.9 out of 10.
The premise was unique, the characters made legitimately decent decisions, really creepy, and without spoilers the ending was left with the option of a sequel but no majorly unanswered questions.
far better.... than the reviews (by ops-52535)
Our house were more than i did expect, good score, good filming, great acting, though a bit stiff at moments, good visuall effects, greatt editing, so i come to the conclusion: can you expect more of a medium to low budget drama/horror/thriller?. as long as the screenwriters avoids the use of the word''hey'', they are usually above av erage. this film were fine,i recommended.
A rating of 5.3 at the moment that I write this review seems really too low, it doesn't do justice to this entertaining and well-made horror-flick. Sure, it's no Oscar-winning material, nor is there a Shakespearian script, it isn't intended to be, it's just meant as your dime a dozen next-door genre-horror and in that capacity is works like a charm. All the necessary ingredients are there: a nice and clueless family that out-of-the-blue gets stuck in the webs of a supernatural force, a slow but adequate building-up of intensity and suspense, and an adrenaline-driven finale. <more>
Even the obligatory last shot, so that we know it hasn't ended at all, is there. There are no jump-scares or graphic displays of violence or gore, instead it's more about a sinister and menacing atmosphere, and though the ghosts may visually not be spectacular, they work creepy enough. Story and script provide a fine and detailed back-ground for the different characters, so that you care for every one of them and the acting of all family-members is surprisingly good: Kate Moyer as the precocious little Becca and Percy Hynes White as the grieving and forlorn younger brother both do a great job and Thomas Mann is equally convincing as the endearing, caring and increasingly exasperated big brother who has to keep the orphaned family afloat. All in all I liked it for what it is: a good, solid, well acted non-pretentious horror-flick.
Watch this and it'll be sort of like watching a Brady Bunch episode about ghosts. Well, sort of. I expected it to be tons scarier than it was. But that seems to be the new 2018 trend--promise but then don't deliver. And weirdly enough, I like it that way. I'm tired of jump scares and extremely evil Mama/Devil's Backbone/Hellraiser characters. It was time for something fresh, and this new crop of Ghost Stories seems to be doing the trick.
