Actually a really good movie (by joshuatrinhnguyen)
I won't spoil the parts that mattered the most since most were incorrect but the the movie was pretty good. I understand the people who do not enjoy the movie because of its accuracy to book like the ages, Clarrise's character, and Annabeth's hair etc. , but remember the movie IS 2 HOURS!!! They probably did not have enough time and money to produce this movie's other important scenes. I will admit the beginning and plot moved way too fast and that even the alternate scenes to replace what the book's chapter has, is kinda unsatisfying. So to the people who read the <more>
book, but did not see this movie, give it a shot. And keep this part of my review a thought. To the people do wanna see it, please do! There's a lot of fast past action scenes, pretty hilarious moments, and satisfying duologue. Though there was not enough character development to understand the background and history of every character, and little information of what is going on. If you watch until the end, the characters develop a little more, and things start to make a lot more sense.Bottom line: See it. Personally, I wouldn't go and see it again on the theaters, but I will definitely buy this on DVD because there might be a lot of background scenes the DVD can offer like in the trailers, Percy is standing outside of the "building" "alone" and why they chose "that" scene instead of "this". Oh yeah, remember, they probably didn't give all the chapters from the book play in the movie, because they didn't know if it would become successful, smart move writers...smart move...I'm gonna give this a ten because most of these reviews listed here didn't reflect what I saw, and its poor rating.Senses: The sound was absolutely wonderful probably because I was in the front , it sounded realistic AND matching. The graphics/effects were OK, it could have touched up a bit more again, probably because I was in the front, so things looked blurry, and I didn't wear my glasses . Still good enough to be put on the big screen. My feelings for this movie was really good, my heart was actually pounding when they did the fight scenes. These types of movies, action/adventure etc, are in my taste. And it definitely goes well with food as your watching.Just an FYI this is my first review ever, and I'm a huge fan-boy of the series. I hope you enjoyed reading this.
Harry Potter Didn't Invent this Genre (by paul-4035)
The belabored Harry Potter references are tiresome. The movie has a boy in it and was directed by Chris Columbus. That's about it. Besides, where did the idea of an adventure with a main misfit character with companions on a mission to bring an object to it's rightful place, while fighting demons on the way, come from? Uhm, that would be "The Wizard of Oz," not Harry Potter. Percy Jackson and The Olympians stands on its own. If people just go for the simplest, most linear and laziest comparison, then all you end up with is a linear and lazy movie review. Kids, teens and <more>
adults who can get past the Harry brain-freeze will love this adventure. There's plenty of great acting and special effects. Uma, Logan, Pierce, Brandon, and Alexandra do a great job and should be applauded for taking on the herculean task of bringing these characters to life. Sit back, enjoy the movie and don't compare it to Harry, It's Percy. Cue in thunder and lighting now please.
I've never read the books and after reading some peoples reviews that he is portrayed as a 12 yr old i have no desire to and as for other peoples reviews saying it sucked well you all suck the movie was great and the commercials for it showed the movie for what it is unlike most i thought it was funny had a good plot and good graphics and Percy i liked his character sarcasm is one of my favourite things; i don't know how anyone can complain the movie had a cast full of great actors and actresses the girl who played Anabeth girl has some serious talent and Percy hes definitely an up <more>
and comer this movie is far better than say for example Twilight you want a book turned movie that was butchered there it is. Now with this movie one can only hope for sequels :
Read books, Like movie even tho different (by brandas2000)
I will not ramble on and on with opinions that include comparisons to other movies, books or characters. I will only say "This is a MOVIE and NOT REAL" before I continue....As far as the books - I purchased these books for my 11 year old daughter last year and started to read them myself. I love Greek mythology and enjoy the premise of these books. My daughter and all her friends are totally obsessed with them oops, here comes a comparison , something that hasn't happened since Harry Potter. I think the first book was a little monotonous with the kids continuing to get in the <more>
same binds over and over and never catching on. The other books are not so much his way. They are fun, full of action and humor, fast-read books. As far as the movie of the first book - The screenplay is very loosely based on the book. The characters are older in the movie and can drive significant since they cannot drive themselves anywhere in the book . Yet, I still enjoyed the adaptation. There is *no way* the movie could have all the content of the book.Only very slightly unnerving was all the sexual innuendo. This really was not in the book and would not have been since the kids are much younger. So, for my daughter and her friends, this kind of freaked them out, but just a little bit.Summary - we all enjoyed it and will definitely buy the DVD. They did a good job of keeping the basic idea of the book including the action and clever comedic lines.
watch it with no expectations, just have fun, and you'll love it. (by callmebond)
If I am not mistaken, the first time I saw its trailer was on Half Blood Prince. Since then, I've become so interested in this film. I've waited for it for quite awhile and this afternoon, i finally got the chance to watch it. So here it goes. The first scene was HUGE!! Yeah, I mean it literally and if you've already watched the film you'll know what I'm talking about ;D. I like the story and I find it fresh. Also, I might be a little biased because I really like the Greek mythology stuff over shining vampires. lol, whatever I haven't read the book yet so I can't <more>
compare much. However, I find the acting quite acceptable. I liked Logan's acting, it wasn't over the top but it's fun to watch. And I bet, in a year or so, this guy will be the swooning item for chicks out there. Brandon's Grover and Alexandra's Annabeth acting were also good, as well as the other casts'. Though the acting and the role that I really loved was Uma Thurman's portrayal of Medusa. I don't know why, but i really liked it. Too bad, she was killed too soon. And oh, the visual effects. Well, I couldn't say more because it's produced by Fox, so we already know what to expect. To sum it up, this film doesn't kick ass like the way X-men or Ironman does, but it kicks ass in it's own way. This film is so fun to watch. There were a lot of funny scenes and lines that make people crack inside the cinema. I think this series will get the hype that the Harry Potter films will leave in 2011.PS: be patient, wait for the credits to go halfway. ;D
It was quite an exciting experience for me waiting for the movie to come out--meanwhile I was reading the book, anticipating a great outturn in this movie especially when it is made by Chris Columbus, who I used to call The Great Chris once It was, after all, worth my while. What I meant was that, I had fun. I really did. Exactly I hadn't been in this much fun since I'd remained seated to observe closely the movie of Alvin and the Chipmunks--really a long, long time. All of them, thoroughly, was movingly amusing and entertaining, especially the part when Percy was muttering, <more>
"This is only a pen." Embarking on this journey of Percy Jackson's really was music to my ears.Their castings were also very indispensable Logan, Brandon... , but some spots needed changing. Annabeth, for example, didn't look much alike what Riordan had described her to be--blond haired, tan, and gray-eyed.However, it were not to all parts that I felt entertained. I meant, Clarisse wasn't in there but instead Annabeth herself raged against Percy? No Ares? And not to mention there was no trace of Kronos. Loosen me up, but it was unbearable the thought of how the next movie would be formed. Or were there no followings? I meant, if Grover wasn't a searcher, how could the next one be formed? Additionally, no trait of Thalia's tree, how could it be saved when it hadn't an existence? And how would Tantalus be kicked out if Dionysus weren't there? This was disappointing what Craig Titley had scripted.Anyway, I love the movie, and all those who are dispensed not to be eager to watch it anymore, please do. Costing only a 5-dollar ticket and 2 hours watching, it is great entertainment source. Believe me.
I am a fan of the books and wasn't sure what to expect when I saw the movie. I was worried it would be another fiasco like the great-book-to-not-so-great-movie Eragon. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, the movie didn't follow the book exactly, but that would be difficult considering how long the original book was. I thought the movie managed to stay close enough to the book that it was still an enjoyable experience to watch it for a fan of the book.I think, overall, the actors fit their characters quite well-- especially Logan Lerman. If they had just started the movie with <more>
him a few years younger, it would have been perfect. IMPORTANT NOTE: There is a funny clip halfway through the credits- so stick around!
A very good movie, and overall appropriate for children! (by canadasmoviefan)
Though i have not yet read this book, the movie seemed to be very well done. I took my little brother and sister and two of their friends to this movie today and they loved it! There was a decent amount of humour in this movie and the 3 new, young leads did a great job carrying this movie throughout. Though this movie seemed to have quite an original ideal behind it, flashes of chronicles of narnia seemed to creep there way into my head. Horse men, mystical worlds, and the young leaders that hold the hopes of keeping the world together all produced a similar feel to the chronicles series <more>
however, the Lightening Thief held its own and was overall a very good movie, one of which i would strongly advise ANY age group to go see in theatres:
Am I the only person that actually liked this film? (by TheLittleSongbird)
I have to admit it, I haven't read the book, but regardless of whether it was faithful or not, this rarely ruins a movie or TV adaptation for me. That said, I can understand the disappointment of those who loved the book. However, I really enjoyed this film, it is hardly the best movie I have ever seen, but I personally consider it one of the better movies of 2010 that I've seen so far, and that is saying a lot considering how disappointing some of the movies have been.Where the film is lacking is in the storytelling. There are those who say that it gets bogged down by too many <more>
mythological references, and I have to say I kind of agree. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief had a brilliant concept to work from and a fairly original one at that, and while the references were very interesting and cleverly incorporated, the writers could have simplified a little how much they included. Back to the storytelling, it does have a lot of exciting moments, such as the scene at the museum with the fury, in Medusa's lair, the fight with the hydra, in the underworld and the climax, but some parts in the middle half drag and feel clunky, and I personally could have done with less of the scene in the casino.Complaints aside, the film looks incredible, the special effects are excellent and the cinematography and scenery are clever and skillful. The music only adds to the excitement and the dialogue has some very nice moments with some humour from Grover and with Gabe when he is seen on television talking about Percy's disappearance and both Medusa and Persephone are deliciously seductive in looks and in dialogue. The film also moves briskly in general, and the direction is decent. Personally I liked the acting, Logan Lerman is surprisingly appealing as Percy, and Brandon T.Jackson is lots of fun as Grover. People have said Alexandra Daddario was too old as Annabeth, I wouldn't know, but she looks lovely and is very spirited in the role. Pierce Brosnan was surprisingly good as Mr Brunner/Chiron, though it was a bit of a shock seeing him with a horse's lower body, Rosario Dawson is fabulously sexy as Persephone and Sean Bean is okay as Zeus though he doesn't have much to do. The real joys however are with Uma Thurman, who gives a delicious turn as Medusa, and Steve Coogan who was a big surprise as Hades.Overall, I actually liked this film, it was fun to watch, while nothing absolutely outstanding or mind-blowing. 7.5/10 Bethany Cox
