Disney have proved yet again why they are a head and shoulders above the competition when it comes to producing movies that aren't admittedly brain food, but are "good clean fun", if you'll forgive the cliché , for kids. For every little girl who ever dreamed of becoming a princess, this film is the perfect way to spend two hours.True, it was grossly unfaithful to Meg Cabot's original novels, but still managed to convey the charm and slick veneer that has come to be associated with Disney, and the valuable message of independence for little princesses everywhere. For <more>
the more mature audience, this is a happy chance to revisit childhood, or simply breathe a sigh of relief that what your child is watching is not in any way compromising or damaging, and will not have to be explained later.Good message. Solid performances. Sweet if bland and predictable at times story line. Great movie!Highly recommended for two hours of escapism on a summer's afternoon.
I just read a comment about how horrible and predictable this movie is, but it is actually a very good movie! Some of my friends even think it's better than the first! The characters are funny, elegant and clumsy!, and they really add beauty to this movie! Usually I don't like sequels, but this one is a perfect continuance of the first movie. The actors/actresses and the direction is beautiful! This movie allows the watcher to laugh and cry almost in the same scene. Movies are almost always predictable-that's why we love the classics and watch movies more than once! If the <more>
princess had not gotten with her love, would we like the movie? I doubt it... Anyway, I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone! My parents even liked it-there were a few scenes where they even cried. If you've seen the Sound Of Music..it's amazing to hear Julie Andrews sing again!
I completely disagree with critics reviews of this movie!! I am a 25 yr old married woman mother of 2 and I love it and I watch it every week!! It kept with the whole plot of Mia growing up to become a woman not a teenager anymore people do have to grow up you know you cant make a 2nd movie and have her still a teenager and finding true love and making sacrifices in life for her country! My mother even enjoys watching both princess diaries with me and my children. I really do hope that they get everyone back for one last big movie finale of the royal wedding and that it is just as great as <more>
the first 2 are! I give this movie a 10 out of 10 because its a wonderful movie that makes you just feel like a little girl again that there is a prince charming out there!
Anyone who liked the first Princess Diaries movie will like this. It's sweet, it's funny, and there are gorgeous men and gorgeous clothes. My best friend and I are in our late 20's and although it was predictable as any chick flick is...it was well worth our 9 dollar admissions. We loved it, and left feeling happy. Mia arrives back in Genovia only to discover that due to a old law still on the books, she has to marry in order to rule her country. Unfortunately there is another candidate. Mia proceeds to deal with her life with her usual mix of clumsiness and sarcasm, with best <more>
friend Lily along for the ride. Memorable scenes include the ball, the parade, the wooden leg, and the continuing romance between Joe and Queen Clarice.
I love the Princess Diaries 2, I like it better than the original, which is very rare for sequels. I admit, it is a bit cheesy, but sometimes cheesiness works. Anne Hathaway is one of my favorite young actresses, and oh my god the guy who plays Nicholas chris pine is so hot! The chemistry between Mia and Nicholas is amazing, and the story is sweet and cute. I love Hector Elizondo and I wish he had a larger role in the second film, but he's still fabulous in it. I'm also so glad that Mia stood up for women and refused to get married just because the law told her too. I'm sure <more>
Nicholas would have married her if she asked him, heck, Andrew was at the altar, but she wasn't prepared to give up her life to make the men who made the law happy. I can't say enough about this movie! Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
Mia is grown now, but she is still learning what being a Princess is all about.I found this endeavor to be far more grounded than the first. Even with Raven's sudden appearance as a childhood friend of Mia's that we've never seen before, and the fact that she gets to sing with Julie Andrews; a lifelong dream of millions of girls from all over the globe, and a few contrivances to help move the story along; this was a top notch Disney work.As a company not known for its quality sequels neither in live action family movies, nor their animated works , I'm personally hoping this <more>
bodes well for Pirates of the Caribbean 2. That's a movie I can sink my teeth into! But back to this one.The relationship between Joe and Clarisse was precious. They were the couple in which I was most interested. I found their hitherto bittersweet romance rather endearing. As I stated in the review for the first installment of this apparent "run," these movies are not usual Fiendish fare, but I must say I was enchanted. This is much more intelligent than the first, and therefore rates an 8.8/10 from...the Fiend :.
My opinions on Princess Diaries 2 (by luva-orlando)
Having read all the books in the series by Meg Cabot, I knew I was going to have high standards, and I was personally quite impressed! I mean, this movie? I can watch it again and again and again, and not get tired of it! It's magic seems to last forever! Anne Hathaway plays a wonderful portrayal of Princess Mia, and her performance is never unsatisfactory. I think, to quote the previous commenter,...the 'transition', was quite effective! The movie was intended to describe Mia's life after she graduates from college. It was not meant to continue where the books left off, and <more>
if that was the case, Meg Cabot, wouldn't have let the movie go into production!!! And yes, there may have been 'eye-candy', but what's a comedy-romance without it? Many congratulations on the movie's success, it was well-deserved!
Wonderful to Share With My Granddaughter! (by Addy54)
I finally saw this movie on DVD with my granddaughter. What a delight! Julie Andrews is as wonderful as always, and Anne Hathaway is just pure joy to watch. I think that movie goers will be watching this young lady for many years to come. Watching the DVD allowed us to view the deleted scenes and I must say to Garry Marshall, "you left the best scene of the movie on the cutting room floor!" Mia and Nicholas in the kitchen is so funny!! Anne does her "Audrey Hepburn" role like a pro, and Chris Pine is excellent in all of his "various roles." It is really too bad <more>
that it didn't make it into the movie. The costume designer did a great job throughout the movie. The dress for Princess Mia to wear to the coronation was incredible! It was without a doubt made for Anne Hathaway! The "Princess Diaries" movies have introduced Julie Andrews to a whole new generation of little girls and Anne Hathaway has secured herself a role in movies that will be timeless. I dare say that she will one day enjoy them with her granddaughter.
How do you live up to the greatest Fairy Tale on Film? (by Robert_duder)
Princess Diaries...one of my favorite films of all time. I would never complain about a sequel, I welcome it whole heartedly. Unless Quentin Tarantino directed and Anne Hathaway was replaced with Hillary Duff...AHHHH. Fortunately the unique Garry Marshall brings his style back to the screen in Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. We find our Princess Mia played once again perfectly by Anne Hathaway finishing up College and returning home to her palace in the fictional Genovia. She is ready to begin her training in order to take the place of Queen Clarice as Monarch of the country. <more>
Unfortunately a rather unruly senator finds a loophole in Genovian Law that could make Mia not the rightful Queen and make his Nephew Nicholas the true heir to the throne. The law states the Queen must be married in order to take the Throne. This means Mia must agree to an arranged Marriage. Together with the Queen Mia finds the perfect candidate for her arranged marriage, he's handsome and diplomatic and honest but there is no spark. She is unfortunately falling head over heels, often literally for the man trying to steal her throne...Nicholas. Now she must decide on true love or love for her country before her throne is taken from her. This film covers a lot of emotional issues, patriotism, love, growing up, coming of age, and new beginnings. Breaking away, as the title song states. The most wonderful thing about this film as well as it's predecessor is Marshall's style. He has an absolute flare for giving us an emotional, nostalgic journey but not only for Princess Diaries but he manages to throw in clever and wonderful little references to Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride and more. A sequel to something I consider to be one of my favorite films is going to be tough but the film pulls it off with minor flaws to me. The flaws to Royal Engagement is the forced rehashes. Many of the jokes, and familiar characters from the original feel very forced and added in. Mia's clumsiness often feels like it has to be there as opposed to be a cute little character flaw. Also Royal Engagement is very Disney'd out with the addition of the curiously added character Raven? She had no bearing on plot line or no explanation to why she was there and yet there she was. Plus she annoys me and I would have much rather seen Anne Hathaway make history singing with the amazing Julie Andrews. With the exception of Raven which was probably forced on Marshall, he continues to shine with his choice of cast. He already knew he had an amazing cast with the original film and brings them ALL back for the sequel. He only adds new characters in light usage with the exception of our villain, John Rhys Davies replacing Mandy Moore and Mia's love interest s . What can you say about the amazing Anne Hathaway as lovable Mia and the incredibly elegant and majestic Julie Andrews who was born to be a Queen. Hector Elizondo is wonderful as Joe, who adores and protects both Mia and the Queen with his heart and soul. The return of some of the other characters again feels a little forced but it's nice to see them again even if they don't fit in the story completely. One of the charms of Royal Engagement is seeing the fictional world that we only heard about in the first one. We got to use our imagination as did Mia to picture the country of Genovia and now we get to see it in all it's glory and all it's people.Saving Grace for this film that still makes it great is romance, romance, romance!! Chris Pine in his debut role is a perfect match for Hathaway's very grown up Mia. They have passion and fire and their squabbles are priceless as you can tell they are crazy for each other. Also the budding romance between Queen Clarice and Joe is beautiful and romantic. A hilarious return cameo by the wonderful character Paolo, the French stylist played by Larry Miller who is so funny in his roles. It was great to see him back!! Overall this film is funny, and nostalgic and a new adventure all in one. I do think sadly it does wrap up the potential of this series but both movies make for a great time!! Not as good as the original but a wonderful follow up. 8/10
