TYG2: An objective and completely NON-BIASED review (by griffon652)
One of the main uses of a professional review from a critic is that they are usually non-biased and objective when reviewing a movie. The majority of the time you will see most critics rate a movie around the same range. This is why going by fan reviews can be tricky. This can be seen in reviews for TYG2. There are far too many 1 and 2 star reviews that are unwarranted. Let's start there; this is by no means that horrible a movie. I will write an objective review so you have a good idea of what to expect from the film. My review contains NO REAL SPOILERS so read without fear!If TYG could <more>
be described by one word, it would be "inspiring." TYG2 can never be described by that word. However, it can easily be described as "exciting." Although at the onset the plot seems to be a replica of TYG; about 30 minutes into the movie it get far more complicated. And by complicated I mean that the script writers tried to cram 3 stories into 1. This is both a positive and negative. For the most part the story flows well in terms of logic and scope. However, it fails in pacing, amount of information that it tired to convey and the last 2 minutes of the ending more on that later . I appreciate what they tried to do with the story, I really do. But they tried to do too much in one movie. If you don't speak Thai fluently or have good English subtitles don't even bother with this movie. Whereas last time a simple story was fleshed out well over the course of the movie; this time the selling point is an intricate plot that slowly presents self to the audience. Therefore, if you can't understand the dialogue the enjoyment of the movie is already cut in half. I believe that the inability to fully understand the story is one of the main reasons for the low rating of this film. Trust me guys the plot is there for the most part but it just flows way too fast. I'm a fast reader and I ALWAYS have subtitles for all movies that I watch. Even with that I had to rewind quite a few times to read all the lines. There was simply too much being said so the subtitle stayed on screen at some points for less then half a second. Furthermore, the best subtitle out there is about 85% complete so that makes the already complicated plot even harder to comprehend. If they added an extra 20 minutes to the movie it would have helped immensely. So would subtitle that is 100% complete. Also, the story isn't big on detail. For a lot of the parts you just have to assume. For example, the main plan of the villain makes sense but they don't give you enough detail to fully appreciate it. It's like telling someone you climbed Mount Everest who has no idea what the hell Mount Everest is. So while they may understand that it's probably some sort of great accomplishment; they won't have the same appreciation as they would if you had fully explained just how difficult and life threatening it is. Also some parts of the story are touched on so quickly that you may completely miss it. An example is VERY MINOR SPOILER COMING UP the undercover agent that was planted at LC's base operations. This part was touched on so lightly that many viewers will miss it. There are many other plot points throughout the movie that are easily missed. Now let's talk about the visuals. The visuals are original, crisp, fact paced, exciting, cheesy and bland. Tony Jaa is impressive as usual with his martial arts display. There are many sequences that will make you say wow!! The ways some of the fights play out are unique enough to differentiate from the first film. The visuals are crisp in the senses that they are unique compared to other films that take place in an urban setting. The "fire room" sequence will be a visual feast for your eyes. However, the fast paced part is a double edged sword. Some action sequences that are fast paced like the second half of the bike chase are fun to watch. But a few of the fast paced fights suffer from the classic too much "cut and reshoot" technique. Notice I said few. For the most part the fights flow smoothly. But there are scenes where the editing is very noticeable, distracting and takes away from the enjoyment of the film. It's obvious that the camera work was done by seasoned professionals. But they were by no means anywhere near what would be considered industry experts. Some of this may be contributed to the forced 3D scenes that were crammed into the film. And yes they are as awful as most people in other reviews have said. There were unnecessary explosions, cheesy close-ups and other unneeded 3D scenes force fed into the film to increase appeal. These scenes accomplished the complete opposite of the director intended; which was to make the movie "cooler." At best they were distracting and at worst they made you completely roll your eyes and say "really .REALLY????."My review exceeded the 1,000 limit. Ah Tony Jaa. Thank you so much for adding wire work, CGI and 3D to every aspect of this amazingly well thought out film. I use to really appreciate the fact that you didn't use that stuff and instead showed off how talented and skilled you were. But, after seeing the protector 2 i've realized just how much you can improve the experience! I thought I was watching a 200+ million dollar budget movie with all those sweet effects sprinkled everywhere. I loved when you were on the bridge on top of the truck and when it lost control and slammed into the railing you managed to tie a rope <more>
around your foot so when you went flying off you naturally would swing all the way under the bridge and land on the other side...looked so good.I loved the 5+ minute long rooftop fight against 50 guys with dirt bikes. How has this not been done before?! Obviously if the one guy you are sent to kill is on the roof you clearly would all get on dirt bikes and try to run him over. When you fought #2 on the train tracks...at first I thought the scene would be kind of cheesy but when you both wet your feet stood on the tracks and exchanged blows as electricity shot everywhere and the sounds of lightsabers clashing filled the air....all I could think was masterpiece. Now, RZA was a fantastic choice for the main villain. He might be one of the best actors i've ever seen. He stole every scene he was in and I couldn't wait to see how you would dispatch him towards the end of the movie. That ending move, while RZA was holding 2 explosives and you kicked him 5 feet away from you and your elephant and he detonated in a massive fiery explosion only killing him and not the 4 main characters that were all right there was masterfully done. This movie is a 10 out of 10 in my book. If you don't get hooked by the fights and top notch CGI then go see if for the excellent story. This is one for the record books.
The Best Martial Arts Film In Ages (by chicagopoetry)
What is with all the criticism of this action packed film? People are complaining because there's too much action and not enough plot? That's what makes it great. Somebody is complaining that the scene with the motorcycles is too over the top? Too over the top? I've been waiting forever for a martial arts film that's over the top. What do I want in a martial arts film? Action. What don't I want. Talking. This is basically just one huge fight scene from beginning to end with classic moments reminiscent of some of the best martial arts films ever made. What makes it <more>
wonderful is that it's still so true to the low budget artistry of the original. It doesn't make any excuses for what it is. The guy gets his elephant stolen so he beats everyone up until he gets it back. What more do you want? He kicks people while his feet are on fire. Lightning bolts fly from his feet as he fights on live subway tracks. He even bungee jumps off a bridge. What more do you want from a martial arts film? Dialogue? I give it a score of ten for being so bad ass and true to the artform.
*SPOILERS* Brutal, Fun Action flick (by klown07-975-749505)
I agree. It wasn't nearly as bad as i was lead to believe based on all the negative reviews. Especially when compared to the epic mess that was Ong Bak 3! Even before I came across people's reviews and comments, I was left scratching my head to the Plot description. Recycled story from Protector 1?? COME ON!!!! He lost his dang elephant again? GEEZ. lol. But, to me the action more than makes up for it. As always, Tony Jaa pours his heart and soul into the fights in this movie. There's no denying he is an awesome martial artist. The dude kicks as$. And he tried to incorporate and <more>
add a lot of new stuff and stunts you wouldn't see otherwise, bad cgi not withstanding, I was still left with some "Wow, and Whoa, and OOOOOH" moments.A lot of the cool shots were made for 3D viewing you can tell. I can truly appreciate what they tried to do with this movie. The Sarge was entertaining and funny as always, I really like that guy : The villains were pretty Brutal! Especially the bald one, man that guy threw the poor females around like they were rag dolls. Tough to watch sometimes hehe. Not to say they weren't super fast and kick as$ themselves. And Protector 2 even had a few surprises, like the glasses guy turned bad. Didn't see that coming. And when Tony Jaa actually "lost" and got whooped by the bald guy. But then, oh wait....He just had a poison needle in his neck, that's why! But still, to see someone you root and cheer for get beat down...not easy lol. Forget the story, tune out logic, and grab your favorite snacks, then just enjoy the action : I think Tony Jaa needs some star writer to have his back. And who knows, maybe more opportunities will open up for him after working with Vin Diesel. Oh, I also enjoyed the bloopers at the end, can see the crew all had fun making this film :D
How can these people give this movie a bad review is beyond me, ok, maybe it's not a 10 but certainly a 9, it is an entertaining movie with a good plot, I just wish jee jee yanin had a bigger role, she's a doll, but there certainly should be no bad reviews about this movie, it's meant to be strictly an action martial arts movie, and they did a good job in that respect.
