Plot: A cryptic phone call sets off a dangerous game of risks for Elliot, a down-on-his luck salesman. The game promises increasing rewards for completing 13 tasks, each more sinister than the last. Runtime: 88 mins Release Date: 11 Apr 2014
This is a wonderful critique of raw capitalism and the unquestioned reign of the 1% for those willing to see it. I recommend viewing this movie to anyone who can relate to the inhuman transformation we are all forced to go through in order to survive in so-constructed and firmly held objectivist societies. This movie deserves a cult following. The story is slow to start, but picks up later on. There isn't much bling, but a lot of substance to the story. The acting is solid. The story is intriguing. There is a plot twist. Other characters could have been fleshed out more for greater <more>
immersion, but the protagonist himself is well portrayed.I enjoyed watching this movie, but you should know my score is not based on the quality of the movie itself. I gave it a 10/10 because the underlying system critique resonated with me.
Perfectly crafted; perhaps the best thriller of the year so far (by abisio)
Contrary to some mildly previous review; this is the best thriller I saw this year so far and I saw lots of movies from USA and foreign . I I strongly believe this movie deserves a real release it was apparently shown during one week without any publicity in few theaters with publicity. It is imperative these guys can make something like this or perhaps better because they fully understand the joy of movies. The premise is primary based on 13 Beloved The Game, The Box and other movies has certain similarities too but far better directed, written and acted.A good man in a desperate <more>
situation, Elliot the outstanding Mark Webber get fired from his job for not selling an expensive insurance policy to an old lady. He is about to get married with his pregnant black fiancée Rutina Wesley , his unbearable and racist father is about to being evicted and move to his house; his mentally ill brother is already living with him and without insurance he will surely be institutionalized. While driving on his car Elliot get a phone call from somebody who knows about his situation and offering $ 1000 to start a game. Just to kill a fly. He does it; but the second challenge, for 3K is to eat the fly. Checking his account and noticing that the money is real, he eats the fly and is then offered to participate in 13 challenges for increasing amounts of money. The rules; he has limited amount of time to perform the tasks; if he loses, he loses all the money, and nobody has to know about this. A few more rules will appear later. As you might expect every task becomes more difficult, dangerous and sadistic. After a while we realize, other people are playing the game and paths are crossing continuously. The joy of the movie is that the director Daniel Stamm makes us immediately care for the character and his game and forget about why this is happening and who is behind it.Elliot moves from a quiet and timid person to an adrenaline driven and sometimes vengeful person . The question is; will he become a psycho as the game tries to transform him.Stamm gives the movie a satisfactory pace, an increasing tension that makes almost impossible to stop watching and a satisfactory ending. Even the production values it seems very modest had been properly used. What else can you ask from a movie than been fully entertaining a on top have a deeper meaning that leave you thinking.
After the first 20 minutes if this film doesn't grip you by your pants until the final, nothing will (by michaelt281702085)
Compelling. Gripping. Different. This is not a horror film, it is a different type of thriller.Putting things simply, a salesman down on his luck in a huge way, whilst waiting for traffic lights to change from red to go, receives a strange message on his cell phone to take on 13 tasks, when completed he will given a fortune into his bank account, but he has to follow the rules and complete each task, and as he completes each task, money will automatically be placed in his bank account. As each task gets increasingly harder, the tension mounts up. You will be on the edge of your seat at the <more>
This film was great! It hooked me from the start and kept me entertained from start to finish. Good acting, an interesting and fresh premise, a strong and well-paced plot, and a satisfying ending. Better yet this film has real depth, and it all comes together very nicely at the end. A thought-provoking film, to be sure.At one level this film is about how everyone is potentially a monster, if enough is at stake. At another level, It's about the conflict between community/family and the individual. Would you forsake your community and/or family for personal riches? This film asks that <more>
very question. Definitely worth the price of a rental, you won't be disappointed!
I saw this film because it was recommended after seeing Nerve, due to a similar concept.Acting is good. Writing is good. Seeing Tara from True Blood in it was awesome and she had great chemistry with the main character which was nice. It was great to see her in a different role.I like films like this because it tells a good story.I would love to see more films like this but as far as I know Nerve and Cheap Thrills are the only similar ones.Great ride, dark, good, feels more like real life then other fantasy films.
Absolutely brilliant! (by AndyVanScoyoc)
Twisted, demented, and sick on a level that bothered even a ghoul, like me. Psychological horror at its best...and by horror, I don't mean gore or anything like that though there is a little bit the horror is purely primal. It is absolutely ghastly to think that someone could be so desperate that they would even contemplate the actions perpetrated in this film. That, alone, is what makes it so upsetting.Never put anything past someone who's been pushed too far. You might find yourself surprised and not in a good way of what they're capable of. Highly, highly recommended!!!!
Game On (by view_and_review)
I truly liked this movie. This movie was of the puppeteer type as I like to call them. A person or person s are committing atrocities yet someone else is pulling the strings.13 Sins is about a man, Elliott Brindle Mark Webber , who is down on his luck when he's offered an opportunity to win loads of money to help alleviate his woes. There are 13 tasks to complete and the rules are such that once he starts he pretty much has to continue to completion. Of course the game is anything but harmless.I was impressed with the plot and the build up. Before having some random person launch into a <more>
morbid game we first got to see the type of person Brindle was and the type of issues he had to deal with. Pregnant fiancé, disabled brother, elderly father, and recently terminated from his job. This information wasn't thrust in there as an aside, we were given it organically within the flow of the movie. It's also a movie that makes you think: "How far would I go for a sizable sum of money?" The puppeteer type movies always find human weaknesses to prey upon and they are usually either greed or survival. Where movies like "Saw", "Die", "Vile", "Circle" and others are about pure survival at its core, "13 Sins" is about social survival. Elliott could've easily opted not to play but what quality of life would he have given his situation? There were some small flaws with the movie but overall it was a good product. They took a known premise and freshened it. It helped that the actors were good and you didn't totally know what was the end game. Yes, I truly liked this movie.
****May contain mild spoilers will not give away major plot holes or ending****This is an American remake of 13 beloved. A Thai film which received much praise at the time of writing I have not watched this version but I will be going back to check it out .From what I've read there are differences between the two films in regards to the challenges laid before from the Thai vs the American version. with the latter being more toned down for a wider audience. The film starts as a curious one the first 10 mins are a waste I was ready to turn it off as it tries to set the scene with low value <more>
production, terrible acting and poor direction. It tries to skip to the meat and veg of the film but I urge you to stay with the film the good part is coming soon. The story follow Elliot Brindle Mark Webber - Scott Pilgrim vs. the World who is a down on his luck sales man with a large family to support and a baby on the way after losing his job he receives an anonymous phone call offering him large sums of cash for doing what seems menial tasks, 13 to be precise and they take some strange twists and turns. He soons finds out that it is legitimate if he completes the ever more challenging tasks the sums of money on offer are credited to his bank account. Things start to take a turn around 35 mins into a 92 minute film when Elliot's morality is called into question and soon finds out he is in something to which he cannot stop or risk losing everything he has worked for and a criminal conviction from here the stakes keep getting higher and higher. The film actually reminds me of the PS3 exclusive game "Heavy Rain" in the way the tasks are delivered and how sadistic some scenes can be. Acting in the latter half of the film seems to improve and characters who mostly are not given much time to grow in the film seem to fill their roles a lot better. Elliot's change of pace as he is seemingly more confident in his new role whilst on the run from the police being headed up by Ron Pearlman. The film gets more intriguing as it goes on with myself always wondering what else could they make him do for large amounts of cash and how can he handle doing such acts. As Elliot struggles to quit he finds himself locked in a race against time to find who or what is doing this to him.The big twist is a reasonable one and you may see it coming by the time the 12th challenge is complete. The ending is quite predictable the story is a good one but I feel not given enough time to grow, another 20 - 30 minuets to allow some of the more interesting challenges to take different twists and it could really set the film apart. That's not to say the film isn't good it is, it's slightly let down by some linear acting.
I am a man of very few words, so I am not going to give a long, drawn- out, in-depth review. This was a wonderful movie. It is loads of fun IF and only if you have as dark of a sense of humor as I do. See it. You will not be disappointed as long as as I said before you have a very dark sense of humor and you like movies in which the main character is psychologically tortured. End of review.Only one question: How the hell did this do SO poorly at the box office?! I mean, how does a movie ANY MOVIE gross less than $10,000?! I mean, "Jaws: The Revenge" made over $20,000,000 for <more>
God's sake. It is not exactly Hitchcock's "Psycho", but "13 Sins" is still a really fun movie.
