I'm glad I watched this til the end, as this unexpectedly became something of a mind-expanding experience. It's very 2001/2010/Contact, with several updated twists and unique ideas.I wasn't expecting much from yet another visual effects guy trying his hand at writing/directing Hasraf Dulull . Those tend to be cheap excuses for cool effects and a shallow little obligatory story to bind the FX scenes together. It takes a while to realize that this film is actually something special. It's based on an idea whose uniqueness and complexity doesn't become fully apparent until <more>
the fourth quarter, and before that, it can be difficult to appreciate. The visuals, while not grandiose, are realistic and believable; which is all they need to be, for this particular story. Although that's still unfortunate, only because it garners ratings and reviews from 14 year-old boys who expect any film with a sci-fi premise to also excite the senses with visual candy. They're disappointed, the online ratings suffer, and fewer people end up watching the movie.I really hope this film reaches more eyeballs, and that it and the filmmakers get the appreciation and adulation they deserve. I'd love to see a remake someday too, something that delivers this big story in a more cinema-friendly way.
Having watched films for 50+ years this is certainly one of the best. No I do not work for the people that made this l know any of them. I cannot believe all of the negative reviews. I saw 2001 A Space Odyssey in the theater in 70MM. Also Planet Of The Apes. This is so much better than Black Panther or any other Marvel or DC crap. Well written and kept my interest until the end.
Stop whining (by warrenmixon-15529)
For what this movie is, going into it you have to understand that they don't care about Oscars or whatever. They're telling a story. With only a few characters. It's well done and the plot is easy to follow with a good twist here and there. And of course the awesome Katee Sackhoff. Give this move a chance. Don't go into it looking for siskel and Ebert thumbs. Its a decent way to spend an hour and a half.
The message is the key to understand the movie (by luismm-14477)
I had the same felling the time i saw "The man from Earth". The special thing in this movie is not the quality of Si-Fi but the message.
Brilliant, after a second view (by motanupizdos)
Let's get this straight, for all the haters aorund here, if you didn't get it, you might have have found the plot of the last Trabsformers movie, a litlle bit conffusing... But, Hey , what yhe heck, such an awseome CGI and well action-packed scenes.. Well, you might consider tahat SF it's not only about that, regardless the budget. It may not be Kubrik's Odissey, but along with Arrival and Annihilation, both so underatted , it's one of the best and mind blowing 3 SF movies, i've come to see recently. And wich reqiaure, a second view, to understand that you were <more>
watching a completely another movie the first time around. If youu're only into Mavrel, Dc Universe, Disney and stuff, don't waste your time with this one. But please stop bullying it, just beacuse it's way beyond your reach.\
Doesn't deserve the negative reviews (by jbrett-18690)
I watched this while recovering from a bad tummy not expecting much from the reviews already written to have those reviews blown away. It's not a film for those who like everything explained or who like action, you have to figure thing out but having said that, in today's world it's not over complicated either. The clues are there in front of you, you just have to know how to put them together. Action takes place too quickly, lack of personnel at the facility, weird weather on Mars which couldn't happen given the size of the planet etc etc. Think of Westworld meets 2001 and <more>
Deep Thinking SciFi - Not For Transformer Fans (by bkhazelett)
Lot of complaints about the special effects, if you plannning on watching and expecting special effects to keep your attention, please don't waste your time and just rewatch Avatar or Tranformers. This movie is more about science rather than fiction, and is an exercise in thought, not in action. Fair warning when watching, pay attention.
This film somehow is NOT BAD at all (by CyniLogical)
First of all, Katee Sackhoff did a great performance in this film. It's like a one- wo man show, if you're not good enough with limited talent to use your own facial expressions, body language, extraordinary memory and most important, the strong will power to carry out the whole film which relied totally upon your solo performance, then the film would become a disaster. But not in this film, Sackhoff held the fort brilliantly and convincingly to show a woman both with in advanced science and fundamental human conscience, how she tried her best to deal with a very critical albeit fatal <more>
nano-speed changing situation and crisis one after another. Although in the end, the outcome and the aftermath were so unpredictable, but it still like what we heard when the Apollo 13 failed, people who involved in that mission could still claimed it'a GLORIOUS FAILURE. The black cube in this film was borrowed from the concept of Arthur C. Clark's "2001: A Space Odyssey 1968 ", the huge Black Monolith with mysterious power, a gateway to the Universe. Here, the black cube also showed us some unfathomable possibility. The magnetism and the space transitioning ability are both current ideas and concepts supported by lot of scientific studies. The other main theme probed in this film was the either good or bad A.I. development, the hottest scientific projects that are being the most current and most important ones by all the developed countries, even the half-baked-ready -for-sale China has also embarked on the competing bus, trying to get ahead of the western world by stealing, spying, briberies and sabotages from them. But in this film, the robotic A.I. has been developed to a completely unthinkable and unpredictable direction, i.e., it has developed into a being with its own mind and intelligence, even its own conscience, morality and ethics. But the A.I. development in this was totally opposite to the 3 Robot Laws set up by Issac Asimov:1 A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2 A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3 A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.Regretfully, the A.I. in this film completely turned out to be the opposite. It breached the 3 Basic Laws, and human beings were totally at its mercy and suffered not just unpredictable outcome but irrevocable aftermath. This film's only ridiculous element was the year of 2036, a fixation of time when all these things would be possible to happen. Wow, I think the screenplay writers; one of them was the director, completely overlooked the current year is 2018, 2036 is about 17-1/2 years away. Although some technical developments on Earth are quite advanced, yet Google's and Tesla's Auto-pilot vehicles are still under numerous tests and failures, wouldn't even ensure a complete success in 2036, and in these two guys' scenario, landing on Mars with the A.I. assistance and then A.I. could decide the humans' extinction or existence, such things would happen and become realized after 17-1/2 years? Give me a break, man. People might criticize the poor or primitive CGI works in this film, but it's not the real issue we have to focus here. By only focused on or complaining with such unimportant budget-wise shortage is like what we usually say: When you concentrate and focus on just One Tree, you're gonna miss detecting a whole Forest." Always think out of the box and try to see the Big Whole Picture. We should not watch this film under the tunnel vision of some reviewers or some of the movie critics, because we have to know some basic backgrounds of how, what and why, even where this film's concepts coming from. It provided you with some profound futuristic thinkings and concepts, even from a philosophical angle that has evolved from Arthur C. Clark's and Issac Asimov's prophetic predictions, then further probed by Carl Sagan. Sci-Fi is not just fantasy or day dreaming, there are so many proofs that many many technical breakthroughs were derived from those bold imaginations.
Yes, it's slow. It unfolds like a one-person play "bottle format" - main scene: the control room . Katee Sackhoff is brilliant reflect on how her character changed in response to ARTI over the course of the film, after you've watched it .Yes, it will cause you to think abut 2001: A Space Odyssey 1968 .Yes, it's low-budget. Katee said principal photography took place over nine 9 days. When you don't have what seems like an hour of battle-scene special effects, when you don't have Big Name Movie Stars, you don't NEED big budgets. If you want to watch <more>
mindless shoot-em-ups-in-space, this is not the movie for you.On the other hand, if you are interested in an exploration of technological development, not just AI, and you're comfortable with dystopia, then this is the movie for you.Given current developments in AI and what appears to be firm resistance to public policy discussion of the ethics/legal ramifications, the movie is timely.
