"All I need is a little help from my friends" goes the line from the Beatles song and that is exactly what Jeff Chang Justin Chon discovers in his two best pals from high school Miller Miles Teller and Casey Skylar Astin do when they come to visit him at school to celebrate the coming of age 21 birthday. Chang, the ever responsible one is determine to stay in for an early medical school interview but is persuaded for one night to try to beat the night of drinking and mayhem. Yes, this movie is predictable and silly but it also is a fun movie to remember the indiscretions of <more>
youth where you could blow off responsibilities to simply celebrate one more trip around the sun. Along the way these boys discover life' s most important secret that of being true to yourself.

First off, in my opinion this movie achieves perfectly what it sets out to do... make you laugh! Now I'm sure by now you've seen the rating and the other user reviews... well here's a spoiler not for the movie don't worry users love to review things when they are mad and many satisfied customers don't feel the need to review. The people that write these reviews clearly do not have an appropriate grasp on how this movie functions. This isn't "The Hangover" okay. They don't parade around making fun of a mentally challenged overweight oaf who serves no <more>
purpose other than to spout out one liners and I'm sorry the Asian actors in this don't illustrate the typical American view on Asian immigrants. This movie isn't meant to be smart, but is a whole lot smarter than just a typical run-of-the-mill one-liner factory. I saw this tonight with three other people, two of them being girls, and I can honestly say that all four of us thoroughly enjoyed this film. The entire theatre was laughing nonstop, man/woman, old/young alike. There was not a single person that left the theatre with a frown on their face. The movie was nonstop, it takes about five minutes for the initial incident to ensue, at this point I was disappointed because I thought the film may simmer down and get a little calmer at this point but I was very wrong. The movie covers multiple locations and spans through the night and morning quite well with a plot that actually makes some sense. Now I've read some reviews where other people have called it juvenile and inappropriate... while that is somewhat true what on earth did you expect? This film is meant to outline an insanely crazy birthday in which a man turns legal drinking age and has some of the misadventures and experiences that most of us have had during our lifetime. To say this movie is wrong is to say you have never let loose and had a little too much to drink, it is to say that you have never been to a party and have never had a best friend. Now to say the film is a realistic depiction of events that happen when beer is involved is an exaggeration but to say one or more of the things that occur don't happen often when large quantities of alcohol are given to teens/older students would be absurd! Out of the four of us that went all of us are of legal drinking age and all of us attend post secondary school and all of us had a blast comparing our experiences to the ones in the movie and all of us laughed our heads off at the movie which for us is very rare. This isn't a normal American pie or van wilder this is something more, and though not mature makes those movies look like fart jokes. We all rate it above an 8.5 and will be downloading maybe even buying it as it is that good. If you are mature enough to admit you act stupid when you're drunk with your best friends then this is for you, but if you can't acknowledge this is a comedy for twenty-something to thirty-something year old then you should go watch something that might suit your tastes more like "this is 40" but I'm sure you'll find some error in the way they point out the flaws in your marriage too, so I guess you probably should just steer clear of comedies altogether because somehow you'll find a problem with everything. It's called 21 & Over not "comedic adventure in which three friends run into zero problems because they don't drink, and have not matured to the point in which they acknowledge sex as a real thing" anyways to those of you who go to this I do hope you thoroughly enjoy this movie, because at our theatre we did not hear a single complaint or anyone who wasn't smiling after this movie was finished
This movie was hilarious over all, when you thought nothing would be better than the hangover this movie comes along and proves you wrong. Filled with drunken embarrassment, bad decisions and lots of misfortune, you'll be sure to have a laugh. I could relate to most things in the movie, having done or seen some of these things my self in real life. It reminded me of my 18th birthday in Australia the legal age is 18 , I too was doing some of the most embarrassing things I've ever done in my life. Bottom line is, I give it a 10 because I have never laughed so hard at someone else's <more>
drunken behavior. If you want a good laugh, just go see the movie.
If you like The Hangover, you'll love this! (by vengeance20)
I know many people will flame this review just like all the other positives, because they just can't except other opinions, because they seem to think it's bad!It was actually a pretty good film! The genre was just like I thought it would be: Sex, Drugs, Violence, bad language etc! If you know what it's going to be like & hate it. Why go and see it!? Just for the excuse of posting a bad review & for something to moan about? Some people are just never happy! Hard to impress! Picky! Critical! People being negative over nothing! To say the least, it was funny at most parts! <more>
Such as the comments Miller was coming out with! Random & just what the f**k like! Also, bit when Casey & Miller were walking through the square naked & were fighting naked! Not to mention Jeff was drunk & started swearing/shouting & just going nuts! Jeff bragging his ID to the bouncers! Miller batting Jeff's dad in the face & Randy going from wanting to hurt Jeff & the others to be friending them! It was overall a funny film! Liked it very much! Just like the Hangover films! Don't knock & be picky! Just go into the cinema like a normal person & enjoy the film! 9/10
I don't understand why everyone dislikes this movie! It was very creative and the jokes in t were hilarious! Definitely a movie I can watch over and over again! I thought it was great: it was funny and had two great leading actors! The jokes were re-used from other comedies, but there was a little twist added on them to make them their own! Miles Teller and Skylar Astin did a great job! This movie is not just another 'what happened when we were drunk' kind of movie, it was original and brilliant! In my opinion this movie is better than 'The Hangover' and movies alike! This <more>
movie had very memorable quotes and the acting was great. Loved this movie!!! Great quotes, very funny and great acting! 9/10! Jeff Chang!!!
Not Your Typical "Crazy Drunk Kids" Movie (by wearedunn9192)
I loved this movie! No loose ends and plenty of comedy without a ton of raunchiness like you'd expect from this type of movie. Good balance of craziness, comedy, and storyline. Couple of twists definitely made this movie stand out. May not be for everyone but I guess I have a bit of a sick sense of humor. A little nudity, a lot of grossness, and a ton of messed up situations, but it all ties together and makes for a great movie. Action, suspense, romance, definite comedy, and all around a lot of fun.In my opinion, this was a lot better than things like American Pie and Road Trip. I would <more>
absolutely buy it and watch it a few more times. Kept me entertained all throughout, and laughing hysterically.
Saw a special screening of this yesterday and thought to myself "This is a juvenile version of the Hangover" only to realize it was from the makers of the Hangover. I particularly enjoyed this movie because there was some serious moments which I thought brought a sense of balance, but of course there was a happy ending. "21 and Over" sort of has the same qualities as "The Hangover", but differs in age and plot. Also, like "The Hangover", the cast was primarily Caucasian which to me seems unrealistic, but it's just a movie at the end of the day. You <more>
will instantly laugh as soon as the movie starts and won't stop until the end. If you loved the hangover you should definitely see "21 and Over"
21 & Over is the Wedding Crashers of 2013...and thats a GREAT Thing (by lucasnochez)
In the United States, when a person turns 21, that time is usually land marked with instances filled with excitement thanks to the upcoming adventures of maturing, independence, self- discovery and of course you know what, all crap aside, its the day to just get stupid drunk and act a fool like its nobody's business. Like anybody planning to sleep in a catharsis of vomit and food consumed from the afternoon, 21 & Over is a raunchy, absurd, highly energetic and overly confident comedy that unapologetically assaults its audience members with inappropriateness from beginning to end.On <more>
the day of Jeff Chang's Justin Chon 21st birthday, his old friends Casey Skylar Astin and Miller Miles Teller show up to his residence on campus. Adamant to get him drunk despite a very important medical meeting the next morning that Dr. Chang François Chau had arranged, Casey and Miller convince Jeff Chang to go out and party. What starts off with just a few drinks and a bit of misdirection turns out to be a rip-roaring journey into the dark corners of Jeff Chang's college campus.Where 21 & Over succeeds and other movies like it fail is in the underlying themes and chemistry. In so many coming of age stories, most notably Project X last year, the friendships that were tested were not tested on the basis of any change. Oh sure, a house was destroyed and a neighbourhood was in complete chaos, but what did it matter to the protagonists? In 21 & Over, each one of the three friends are facing the biggest issues of their lives, growing up. Often longer for some people, sometimes a lot quicker and at times unknowingly to others, the theme of growing up is the quintessential magic formula for coming of age romp-comedies. Just look at one of the best comedies of the last decade Wedding Crashers and how that theme was explored with over-sized children as adults. The chemistry in 21 & Over is spot-on. Miles Teller is reminiscent of a young Vince Vaughan and his wildly fast-talking antics drives most of the ridiculous comedy forward with ease. Skylar Astin much like his previous role in Pitch Perfect, serves as a worthy counterpart to Teller and the eye candy for female audience members to flock to theatres. If there is one thing that makes me mad about 21 & Over and the previous writing efforts of the comedic writing duo Jon Lucas and Scott Moore is how simple their script ideas are yet how well done their narratives and plot points are. Penning the first two Hangover films, it angers me to think how simple the premise for all their hits were and why I couldn't think of it myself. It seems like the writing duo have a knack for exploiting the obvious yet unexplored on film, adding a lot of fun in the mix.21 & Over is an outrageously fun time at the movies. Although the film may not be for everyone, 21 & Over is a flashback of so many times when the images on screen are so reminiscent of some of the stupid things that may have happened to you, at one point or another. Don't deny it, just laugh and enjoy the ride. Just like what Jeff Chang's yells at the bouncer before getting in, "21 blackjack [email protected]&$er!". Its not denying that 21 & Over is definitely a sloppy winner!
It might not be as good as the classic 'HANGOVER' but it is better than it's sequel. (by Hellmant)
'21 & OVER': Four Stars Out of Five An 80s style youth party flick from the writers of 'THE HANGOVER' Jon Lucas and Scott Moore ! Lucas and Moore wrote the film and also make their directorial debut. It tells the story of a straight-A student who agrees to go out drinking for his 21st birthday, the night before a big medical school interview his domineering father set up for him. It stars Skylar Astin of 'PITCH PERFECT' fame , Miles Teller of 'PROJECT X' fame and Justin Chon of 'TWILIGHT' fame . The movie has been compared to other similar <more>
teen sex/party films like last year's 'PROJECT X' as well as the great 'HANGOVER'. I'd say while it doesn't match the greatest of all drunk party films 'THE HANGOVER' it does make a very nice and somewhat classic in its own right youth gone wild film all the same.Chon plays Jeff Chang who's full name is used at all times, even by his two best friends, which some say is racism , a straight-A college student who's been studying to be a doctor. His two best friends, Casey Astin, who looks an awful lot like a younger Dane Cook and Miller Teller , who haven't seen Jeff in a while, decide to show up at his place on his 21st birthday to take him out partying. They are startled to find Jeff's father, Dr. Chang Francois Chau , there. Dr. Chang informs the two boys that Jeff can not go out drinking with them at all because he has an important medical school meeting the next morning that he set up for him. After the doctor leaves Miller continues to harass Jeff into going out with them, all the same, until Jeff gives in and agrees to go out for one drink. One drink turns into several, Jeff becomes too drunk to walk or talk and the boys can't remember where he lives. So they spend the rest of the night trying to track down someone who does so they can get him home in time for his big interview. The movie has a very similar formula and style to 'THE HANGOVER' and while it might not be as good as that classic film it is better than it's first sequel and probably it's second . Director Todd Philips would have been much wiser to keep the writing team of the original 'HANGOVER' instead of replacing them with himself and others which of course got them much weaker results . As this movie proves Lucas and Moore know how to keep the classic 'drunks gone wild for one night of total mayhem' formula going without ruining it or making it seem old. The acting is all more than adequate There's also a beautiful and extremely likable girl in the film, named Sarah Wright and Lucas and Moore actually make great party film directors as well. Fans of these types of movies definitely won't go wrong here. I saw it as party of a double feature I created; at Regal's $5 movie night in Corvallis with 'THE LAST EXORCISM PART II'. Seeing an 80s style teen sex/party flick with an 80s style B horror film was a great match up and while both were enjoyable despite what the critics say this was the better film of the two.Watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v pFTKqX4Wyew
