I'm a fan of the show, big fan of the movie! (by retrofiles)
I have loved Ab Fab from day one, back in 1992 and have a boxset I sometimes still dig out and watch when I have time. Last night I chose to watch the movie over watching Wales win their way to their first semi final ever in the Euros. That's how much I love the series and had been looking forward to the film hitting the cinema!I love the characters Eddy and Patsy - always thought Jennifer Saunders is hilarious, even when she was still doing French and Saunders. Joanna Lumley looks fantastic though and what a great actress with perfect comedy timing at 70! - and this movie delivers its <more>
familiar in your face parody of the fashion scene and PR business, showing how pretentious they are with sharp satire. It returned to everything that was witty in the first few series, with outrageous behaviour from the lead characters. I may be biased because I am such a huge fan, so if you love the series like I do, you won't be disappointed.
I went to the Cinema for the first time in over ten years. just to see this film. Classic Ab Fab, I love Absolutely Fabulous and whilst I will admit, Jennifer Saunders could of slipped a few more one liners in. LOVED the film though!! The 60 'A Lister's' that feature in the film says it all for how popular it still is after 26 years. I hope they film a series 6, 7, 8, 9 and on and on etc. Both Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are Amazing Women in their own right, this film is a MUST SEE!!!! This film is every Absolutely Fabulous Fans Dream come True! Now just have to wait for <more>
the Bluray to be released, there will no doubt be a gag reel on there!!!!!
It's been a long time coming. Glad it finally happened! It was everything the series was and more. The ability to make comedy out of tragedy is the epitome of comic genius and Jennifer Saunders proves that is exactly what she is, a comic genius. The style of comedy in the series and this movie is eccentric and unlike anything else ever written. If you don't get it, that's too bad, because it's hilarious. The juxtaposition of frivolity and the seemingly halfhearted search for enlightenment in a world that is anything but enlightened, the irony of Edina's daughter being the <more>
only voice of reason in her life, the best friend playing the part of the blind leading the blind, all culminates in a soul searching moment that lasts about as long as it takes to realize she is on top of a world she doesn't fully understand but embraces anyway. While watching you really get a sense of Jennifer imagining that she could have everything she ever wanted, and making fun of it all at the same time. This final chapter in the story is the perfect ending to a fantasy world that deserved the international Emmy it achieved.
I have been waiting for this movie for a long time and it did not disappoint! I am a huge fan of the TV series. I am addicted to it. So I missed them. I missed Patsy, Edina and the gang. Going to the cinema was like visiting old friends. All of them are there, everybody. Big names, you know; and again they make you laugh like if nothing has changed. Lights! Models! Guest list! It was the best, darling! The only issue was that I was only allowed 2 bottles of wine in the cinema!! Do they know who we were going to see?! ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!
Brilliant and stays true to original TV series (by showoff)
Quite simply, the movie was well written, stays very true to the original TV series, with similar jokes, physical comedy and non-politically correctness. AbFab of the 90's was so ahead of it's time, people really didn't realize it back then. So many references that are or have been used since or become common stance, the movie also tries to break some new ground but it's hard in this era. There are countless cameos, two pleasantly surprising roles/characters played by Jane Horrocks and Barry Humphries try to figure them out before reading the cast list on IMDb , showed that <more>
the people involved truly enjoyed making this movie. A few cute twists made it fun too. I will have to see it a second time to pick up on all of the one liners I missed because the audience was laughing so hard - and most of the advanced screening audience had never seen AbFab before they took a poll beforehand . This is proof that the movie IS funny, even for those who don't know the characters. The Costume Design was spot on. The locations, brilliant! The acting, perfect and so wonderfully acted by all: remember, many of the characters are supposed to have larger than life attitudes or style. The only complaint would be the sound - it was surprisingly inconsistent and in this day and age I was surprised that the producers didn't have better audio editors and audio dubbing people.
You might not think it to look at me but Ab Fab is my life. I've been watching Absolutely Fabulous ever since I can remember. Me and my sister have to watch Absolutely Fabulous in order to get through life. I don't think there's any show on TV that feels fresher and more hilarious the more you watch it apart from Ab Fab.The film has to be my most anticipated film ever. Here are a few points just to give you an idea of how excited I was for Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie: I'm traveling Australia at the moment so I stayed up until 3am to watch the Leicester Square premiere on a <more>
live stream, I had at least four separate dreams about watching the film one of them was a dream within a dream , I refused to watch the trailer in fear of it spoiling all the best bits and I entered every competition I could find to win tickets to the premiere in Sydney. I also won those tickets and spent about $600 to fly to Sydney in order to attend that premiere.Attending that premiere was one of the greatest nights of my life. The whole experience was completely overwhelming. I'd just been within touching distance to two of my biggest idols in life Jen and Jo if you hadn't have guessed and then the film played. It was all too much to take in. Of course it was a total blast but it went by in a flash! I genuinely thought that it was halfway through but then the credits rolled and I was dumbfounded. I saw the film again a couple of days later just so I could properly assess it.Obviously if you've read all of that jargon above then you'll know that this review is going to be horrendously biased. I will say though that if you've never seen an episode of Absolutely Fabulous then don't start with the film because it is made for the fans. Even if you're a causal fan, the chances are that you won't like the film. Jennifer definitely wrote this film for the hardcore fans and I take my hat off to her for that. It's a continuation of the series and it's all the better for it. Ab Fab has always moved forward so why should it stop now?I watched the film in a theatre jam-packed with fans as big as me and there were massive laughs and cheers every minute at least. I've got to be honest and say that I wasn't entirely sure if it would work as a film. With all the celebrity cameos being announced it seemed like it could slide into the Mrs Brown's Boys D'movie route. Also Jennifer has never written a film before and film screenplays are very different to the telly. However, I can safely say that Absolutely Fabulous does completely work on the big screen. The cameos aren't as forced as I had feared, in fact many celebs end up playing actual roles instead of just themselves. The film opens in the only way it could with Patsy and Eddy rocking up to a fashion show, getting blathered and stumbling back the next morning to straight-laced Saffy in a state that would make Lindsay Lohan blush. It's a stellar or should I say Stella? opening which basically sums up why we love Ab Fab in five minutes. From then on we're straight into an onslaught of fan favourite characters all wrapped up in a hysterical, albeit fairly loose, plot about Edina accidentally knocking Kate Moss into the Thames. It has to be said that Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are absolutely on fire in their roles as the fabulous friends. A lot of reviewers seem shocked that they're still so good after 25 years but they've never really stopped playing these characters. People look at it as a show from the 90's and whilst the last full series aired in 2003, there have been specials leading all the way up to 2012 so all of the cast involved remain as fresh as ever. Joanna Lumley in particular shines in this film though. She's 70 years old and still has such impeccable comic timing and chews up every scene she's in despite not eating since 1973.I was surprised at the amount of references and in-jokes included in the film for the fans but all of them were a delight. There are plenty of fresh jokes fired at you as well. The laughs come thick and fast, barely giving you time to breathe for 90 minutes! The film also moves at quite a nice pace in the first half, setting itself up for a proper comic caper but it never quite lives up to that promise. The film's marketed as "Patsy and Eddy on the run!" But without spoiling anything, this doesn't really happen. At first I was a little disappointed at the lack of momentum in the second half but on a second viewing I realised that a big chase movie really wouldn't be in the spirit of Ab Fab. It's always been more about sitting back with a bottle of bolly and this is what the film sticks to.Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie isn't supposed to be taken seriously. It isn't going to sweep the Oscars and nor is it trying to. Jennifer Saunders has created a consistently hilarious romp for the fans. Most reviewers call the film over-stretched but if anything I found it a little rushed and under developed! There are plenty of plot points and new characters left unexplored to their full potential but hopefully all will be resolved in the inevitable sequel. It's not the best film ever made but It's definitely one of those films which you can watch again and again and still find hilarious. For hardcore fans of the show, this is a comedy classic.
I'm from someone who is a massive fan of the TV series, the film didn't disappoint. No it's not particularly original, nor is it the best comedy Saunders herself has written, but this film is so feel good you can't help but grin, giggle and laugh-out-loud throughout. The film is brisk and whips by very quickly. Though the story is often disjointed, it's not where the film goes it's what happens while you're there. Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders are just a joy to watch and there's a ton of fan service as practically everyone who has ever been in the show <more>
makes an appearance here. I came out of the cinema grinning ear to ear, which oddly not all comedies manage to do. It was like going for meal with an old friend that always makes you laugh. If you weren't a fan of the show steer well clear - this is not a film for you. To those that did enjoy the show it's a must see. No it's not going to win any awards though Joanna Lumley is such a terrific comedy actress , nor is it going to challenge the convention of comedy, but it is going to make you happy. Isn't that comedy was created for? Absolutely Fabulous Sweetie Darling!
Fabulous for fans, watchable for non-fans (by LittlePeachfuzz)
If you were a fan of the TV show, you will love the film - it's quite a crowd pleaser for the fans. It has all the right nods to the series, so non-fans may miss out on quite a few inside jokes. You don't get much introduction to the characters, so having seen at least some of the series means that this isn't an issue, but I imagine that it may not be so great if you don't know the characters already. Also, it's very nice to see familiar faces from most of the old gang.If you haven't seen the TV show, this film is still pretty good, but you won't get as much out <more>
of it. It has quite a few cameos which are fun regardless, and some big laughs. Overall, you would probably find it to be a fairly standard comedy film, but not outstanding. My recommendations - if you liked the series, definitely go to see this. The girls are as funny as ever, and the film gleefully caters for you. If you haven't seen the series, you should watch it, and then watch the film. You will certainly not regret getting into the Absolutely Fabulous world. If you have seen the series, but you didn't like it, you are an atrocious enigma and I don't know how to deal with you.
Like the TV show, this has to be viewed twice to get it all in. At least twice, sweetie darling. Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie is aiming directly at the fans of the show. I kinda was so I can safely say it really didn't draw any newbies in. BUT, if this is your first viewing of Patsy and Edina and you thought they were, in fact, fabulous, then definitely check out their entire series. This is all you'll get from their show.Basically, washed up BFFs try to land a fashion client but instead she landed in the river causing them to be on the run. Backing up, these two BFFs are <more>
horrible, despicable and hilariously bad gals and yet, we love them. So, mainly the movie's about watching these bumbling idiots escape real harm and maintain their entitled lifestyles.#1 You have to like the show it's based on. #2 You have to like British humour. #3 You have to know some bit of the fashion world. Those are good rules to abide by when selecting this feature. Now, I am only a passer-by fan, like minimal British humour and I know NOTHING of the fashion world. But, I know the show and once I listened carefully to the jokes and absorbed their dry scenes, I could laugh out loud instead of the laugh-track missing from this movie. It's definitely not for everyone but it's still worth a watch if you meet any of the three stipulations above.***Final thoughts: I would never have heard of this show if not for some incredible friends I met decades ago. They were into it. I wanted to be part of the gang and I indulged. I really did like the episodes I watched, so much so, I claimed to be a "big fan" of the show. Funny enough, it turns out, as many years as they were on, I really only ended up watching two episodes – the pilot and its follow-up. Nothing else. So, I guess I cannot consider myself a "true fan."That all said, I still like the show, adore the theme song and love the characters of Edina and Patsy and will cherish both them and the friends I made through them. Cheers and thanks a lot.
