Not the disaster they make it out to be. (by nsterjo) |
Having read the worst reviews about this film, I went into the cinema expecting to be bored and annoyed by what they are calling a disaster and a flop. However, even though I sincerely do not expect anything great from Shyamalan at this point, I found it a bit hard to believe that Will Smith would fall so low, so suddenly and make a very bad movie. I wanted to decide for myself and I am glad I did. The film was quite enjoyable, it had a fair amount of action and emotion, balancing the two quite well. It is by no means a great movie, the likes of which we're used to expect from Will Smith, <more> |
Good Movie -- Bad Reviews Are Full of Crap (by draconis50) |
I have no idea who is sending these bad reviews, nor where their expectations come from, but my wife and I just saw this movie, and both of us thought it was quite good. The acting was NOT "wooden" as one review I read stated. The characters are at times SUPPOSED TO BE rather stiff. And both Jaden and Will Smith turned in good performances. If you didn't like them, then it was the character you did not like, because they portrayed the characters well. At times I did not like them, either, but that was the CHARACTER and the WRITING, but NOT the acting. The special effects were <more> |
Don't fall for it! (by iwantyourjob) |
I just read a review saying that Will Smith didn't show enough emotion, and that the movie wasn't funny enough.....WHAT TRAILER WERE YOU WATCHING! Will plays the prime commander who's rise to fame was entirely based off of his ability to bypass the emotion of fear! How did you think he was gonna act? Did you expect Carlton to pop on screen, doing his shuffle around Will and Jaden crying on the bathroom floor of a spaceship? People who don't like this movie either can't look past Jaden growing up rich, refuse to believe that more than just one member of a family is capable <more> |
Why the hate? (by captainpat) |
I loved this film. It's original. And I am a science fiction junkie. Why the hate? I left the theatre full of praise for the script, directing, acting, visual effects - I thought it was one of the best films this year. In fact the theatre was full. Then when I got home I had to look twice at the comments on IMDb as I could not believe the reviews. And I am so glad I didn't read them before going. Is it "hate the Smith's" week? So much Science Fiction today rides on the back of series created many decades ago. And many seem to be effects driven and not story driven. I <more> |
I thought it was a very good movie... (by johnny-curry25) |
I saw the movie and rated it 9 out of 10 stars. As retired military, I could relate to the gruff military man who is also a father. I have to admit, I never babied my kids and yet, I like to think they understood I loved them.I am not so old that I cannot remember the anguish of attempting to pass from boyhood to manhood. I would have thought so many could easily relate to this story. As for the casting and acting, my criteria is pretty simple...I'm not an actor and if you can do ten times better than me, I'm good! It seems to me if you want Shakespeare, go see a Broadway show! As a <more> |
It's OK to like this movie, despite the racially motivated pan in the New York Times (by jwardww) |
You don't have to be Alberich to write for the New York Times, but it would seem that it helps. That's right, forsake all love for career gold. After Earth is a wonderful movie about parental love. That's all it is. Thrown in with the price of admission is an engrossing odyssey with excellent special effects, suspense and muscular, coming-of-age adventure. There could have been no other motive for the Times to bad mouth this movie, except the obvious one of racism. What perhaps made this film so irritating to the parochial Times critic was the celebratory portrayal of an African <more> |
I don't get the hatred (by Robert_duder) |
The outpouring of hatred over this movie makes no sense. This week I had the opportunity to see four of the current big movies in the theatre and this was by far the best of them. The same petty arguments are being made by people that claim this is awful. Jaden Smith, M. Night, and even Will Smith. So I went in with very low expectations...I mean the film has a 4.7 rating right now which is atrocious. So thank you all for the meagre expectations because I thought the film was great. Not amazing, not life changing but great. Then again I have disagreed with the masses on an M. Night film <more> |
If you know what being in the moment means, or like sci fi, then watch this film! (by rich-helps) |
I liked this movie. I nearly didn't go to watch it because of the sea of bad reviews but then I remembered I enjoyed 'the last air bender', by the same director. I also thought, I like getting lost in a sci-fi flick, I like Will Smith and I'm bored so off I went for a later showing. I was expecting drivel and to be bored stupid with no real mind stimulation at all... but this didn't happen. I'm not a writer or a major film buff so can't review too thoroughly here but I was entertained for the whole movie, had a tear in my eye at times and easily got lost in the <more> |
I would give it a 6.0 but 4.7 as it is right now is way too low (by claucrespo) |
4.7, for real! are you saying twilight is better than this c'mon! OK, yes the movie have some big loopholes, yes they could have made really more interesting story, yes it is as predictable as it can possibly by, yes will smith is limited to a supporting role, yes the acting may not be academy award deserving, but the movie is still pretty watchable.I chose not so watch it because of the reviews, and I was bored as hell this weekend and a friend which shares my movie tastes went to see it without reading the reviews and he said it was at least entertaining, that got me curious, and out of <more> |
