but this is not his movie, it's Jayden's and it's not a bad one for the younger Smith. Of course, he's not too mature as an actor, but if you don't expect too much from him and the whole thing, you don't get disappointed. I believe the whole bad feedback about this movie comes from the fact that it was directed by Shyamalan and that Smith senior was not the main star. If you get past the fact that Shyamalan's previous offerings were simply horrible and alleviate the pressure of performing as a blockbuster, you'll find that this was actually a decent movie. I would rate it 7 out of 10, but because I feel so many people out there have been unfair to it, I will give it a full 10, just for the heck of it.

Now check the running time.....It's not even 2 hours! After earth has smooth pacing, a clear storyline, a good plot, good FX, and good acting! I have never in my life been so opposed to what the common consensus on a movie was. I am 100% sure that this movie was the target of a smear campaign. Do not fall for it! If you ever wanted to watch this movie, go and watch it. Do not be despaired. It's good, through and through.

thought the spaceship, suits and gadgets were innovative. I hope there is a sequel to this piece of original work.

former military man, I also give a lot of points for effort...just for trying. I would love to know the backgrounds of so many of the reviewers that found this movie so awful! As they so proudly point out the failures of the director and actors, it would be great if they would share their supreme achievements in this world so I could compare and then truly appreciate the failures of Will and Jaden Smith.Someone wrote Kitai was too skinny and lanky and not believable for the role. People that join the military come from high school and many start off as puny. I joined the US Army at 18 and was 6 feet tall and weighed 139 pounds...skin and bones. However, I was tough and could run like the wind. Five months later, still only 18 I was a paratrooper in the army. Sergeants don't judge you on physical size but the size of the fight in you and they will train you to do anything if you are willing, fear notwithstanding. I was afraid a lot.The science fiction was good enough. Some reviewers complain that it is the same old science fiction all the time. The space travel and ship was something different for a change...someone complained. The weapons were different...someone complained..."why didn't they just use laser guns?". Clearly there, just, is no satisfying some people.I was pleased to notice many young people high school age in the theater and they seemed to follow Kitai's journey with much involvement and cheering and clapping for his victories. I think I can safely say they enjoyed the movie as much as I did. Because I want to go into a movie with no expectations, I always skip any movie review and go watch and judge a movie for myself.In my opinion, which is worth no more or less than yours, this was a very good movie. For me, I loved the story and the story telling. Coming of age, except on a really dangerous planet and your super-hard-to-please dad is watching and constantly barking orders . The science fiction was above average for me. The acting was believable for me, which is all I require. Again, a very good and highly entertaining movie.Have a good day!

before. I thought Lady In The Water was superbly brilliant. Then again this is also the guy that made The Happening, easily one of the worst films I've ever seen. Still I found this film to be entertaining, decently acted, very good special effects and a generally well made, well produced film. M. Night really is a brilliant story teller, we've seen it before with his successful movies and in my opinion his less than successful ones. Whether he hits or misses he tries very hard and I saw the fantastic imagination that went into this movie.Will Smith has always been THEE personified movie star. Nearly every film he made was a huge hit. The guy has an undeniable incredible charisma and yes he has a big ego but somehow it works for him. In this film he is almost a supporting actor. He spends nearly the entire film laid up and on a com headset. Still he brings a certain intensity to the role and is certainly believable as a man who has learnt to eliminate fear. I'm nearly as sick about hearing how much people hate Jaden Smith as I am about people hating Justin Bieber. I don't understand the hatred for the kid. Yes he has an ego, just like his Dad but I think he's reasonably talented, he is still pretty young to really know if he has the acting chops that his Dad has. I thought he actually did a great job in this film. He didn't show the ego that he tends to have in person and him and his Dad worked very well together. Both roles were solid and carried the film just right. Jaden was a full on action/sci-fi hero and it worked and was believable and bravo to him for that.Somewhere along the line M. Night Shyamalan became a joke and that's unfortunate. I don't really fully understand why he became such a joke. I mean, he has made a few stinkers...one horrendous stinker The Happening but he has also made some amazing films. I wouldn't put this into his amazing movies but I wouldn't put it anywhere near his stinkers. This was a great, entertaining, emotionally charged sci-fi flick and I enjoyed every minute of it. I admit I was caught into the M. Night hoopla and expected a twist ending but this one is just a straight forward mainstream adventure flick. One of the final scenes between father and son was near brilliant and almost brought tears to my eyes. The special effects were very well done and some of the monsters and beasts they created were epic in stature and should be looked at as being fun and well done. I guess I just don't understand the expectations people had from this. It seems that people have a real grudge against young entertainers like Jaden Smith but I am not one of them and I encourage you if you love sci-fi to watch this and simply enjoy it. 8/10

universe that this film is set in. BUT! What I really liked about the movie and what bumped it up to 8 out of 10 is the message that the movie makers were clearly trying to get across. They succeeded and I don't want to spoil it for anyone but I certainly left the movie grounded in the moment and free of fear. I don't care if I don't sound cool or in the know like the other critics, any film, book or stimulus of any kind that helps free me from my mind in this way gets a massive thumbs up from me.

curiosity and boredom I went to watch it. I have to admit that despite the stuff mentioned above and in other reviews it was entertaining.I think people was going to this movie waiting for other Avengers only to be as disappointed as I was with Iron man 3, but if you just want to see an entertaining movie with a good production, good CGI and a rather common story, instead of another Avatar, then I think this movie deserve at least 6/10 I'm giving it 8/10 just to try to boost the ratings a bit and because I actually like it I'm no movie critic so I rate based on how much I liked it, couldn't care less for the technical/critic part of the movie . I think 4.7 doesn't make it justice just filter IMDb for movies with 4.7 and you will see what I'm talking about.
