What matters most is the acting (by Pidgey1) |
I had to pause this movie and walk away many times. Not out of distaste or lack of interest, but because the acting, location, tone, and cinematography were all so realistic, in a sense, hyper-realistic. Stephen Dorff, whom I've seen go from cheesy to one of the best actors working, embodies Melvin, the every man, down on his luck, used to blaming the world, drugs, alcohol, women, never satisfying his electric literally impulses, plays against the equally surprising Eddie Griffin. Both of these characters set in the larger character of post Katrina New Orleans, engage us at every turn, <more> |
wonderful movie (by amycapdeboscq) |
would absolutely recommend this movie! in my opinion the reason this movie has such a bad rating isn't because it's a bad movie, but rather what most people thought they were going to see beforehand.spoilermost people expected a generic high budget kid friendly "superhero" kind of movie going in, but it wasn't. that's what i loved personally about the movie it showed the troubled life of an alcohol and drug addict who was gifted with the ability to move things with his mind. the way the movie was shot almost like a documentary at some points showing the main <more> |
A Close Hero (by rcarlosjl-91037) |
American Hero show us. A different kind of hero, one who doesn't insults our intelligence. The movie show us the life of Melvin but the history of his community, where working class people fight everyday to live in a hard and hostile society. I appreciate a lot the character of Lucille, different than the usual characterization of a person with disability I prefer to talk about functional diversity , the drugs threat over youth, The Katrina that still affect the life of many people. Is many histories and the history of someone who have been lost for many years and finally open the eyes <more> |
Hidden Gem (by stonekeeper_ever) |
By the trailer, I thought this was gonna be a low budget superhero comedy/parody. By the rating 4.9 , I thought it was gonna be idiotic but maybe funny. So I gave it a look on Netflix and I was surprised to find a well acted drama that struck a chord with me. It actually struck many chords and the characters felt scary real. Never would've I thought that I would have all these emotions watching this. It does not rely on special-effects or action at all and the comedy aspect is secondary. It's in it's tone, it's words, it's music. It's in it's heart that this movie <more> |
Nice little seriocomic sleeper (by Woodyanders) |
Drug-addled all-around foul-up Melvin a fine and likeable performance by Stephen Dorff decides to finally get his act together so he can use his heretofore suppressed telekinetic powers to do some good. Melvin is assisted on his noble quest by his easygoing disabled best friend Lucille a spirited and engaging portrayal by Eddie Griffin .Writer/director Nick Love relates the enjoyable and engrossing story at a constant pace, grounds the premise in a plausibly mundane everyday reality, offers a surprisingly thoughtful and effective mix of comedy and drama, and further provides a flavorsome <more> |
