Action, aliens, guns, explosions, cheese and some 'kick ass' special effects, sounds like the perfect movie evening in to me.It starts you off in the action and keeps it coming right to end, which is unlike many action movies that have been coming out lately. The character interaction and register is about the level you would expect along with the onslaught of one liners and cheese. This movie's current IMDb rating of 5.9 is to be honest some what of a joke and should not put you off watching it at all. I would however suggest you go and watch something else if you feel like being <more>
intellectually stimulated.I believe that people are turning their noses up to this movie on grounds that should not be brought up when reviewing this genre.I also believe that people aren't generally stupid and if you watch Battle Los Angeles you'll know what kind of movie to expect and you won't be disappointed
FINALLY A MOVIE on par with Independence Day (by scottaustinsingley)
After reading the reviews on this movie I was in shock how critical people were being comparing it to other films. Yes it is Black Hawk Down meets Independence Day however it is a formula that WORKS. The special effects are fantastic and handled with intricate detail. I suppose everyone has seen too many other movies with bigger aliens with higher firepower but I have to say the "Halo"style action and "Saving Private Ryan" style violence gave this film more guts and heart than any movie I've seen since Independence Day. Had this movie come out before Skyline and <more>
Cloverfield I doubt it would be so quickly judged by its creature design. 5 stars from this critic and bravo to the most heroic alien movie to come along in some time!!!!
I can honestly say that I enjoyed this movie a lot. I stayed on the edge of my seat throughout it with anticipation of the next action scene which was fast and often. This movie also didn't seem to waste any time in getting into the thick of it. I enjoy these types of movies in the first place, and with the exception of the jumpy style of the film shooting I thought that it was great.I also liked the way that the story unfolded. Even at the ending I would have been OK continuing the movie for another 30 minutes.Recommending this movie all the way. Glad I didn't listen to the <more>
"critics" who for the life of me have no idea what the average movie goer is looking for in a movie.
I saw the movie trailer so I really didn't expect anything more than an entertaining B rated science fiction flick. No need for spoilers again I saw the trailer . It was a pleasant surprise. I actually saw a VERY entertaining kick @$$ A-/B+ rated science fiction movie. The plot was in the realm of possibility, given the circumstance. The characters seemed plausible, given the range of the actors. The action kept me on the edge of my seat. All good signs.Personally, we need more science fiction movies. If you agree, and you don't require perfection in EVERY film viewing experience -- <more>
go see this movie. Take it at face value and enjoy it.I did.
I recently watched this movie and my conclusion is... THE BEST $8 ill ever spend. Many people criticize it for its "terrible acting" and "weak plot" but if you were trying to make an alien invasion movie WITHOUT stealing ideas from the many made, this movie is easily one of the best yet, if not THE BEST. Yes, there are some un-needed cheesy phrases but its nothing you cannot expect.Yes, there is camera shaking... but imagine how unsuspensful it would be with guns blazing and explosions with a steady camera... rather boring compared to the shaking and panicked feeling it <more>
creates trying to emphasize the situation. The story line doesn't have to be perfect for this given situation, your planet is being over taken by ruthless aliens and the first thing on your mind would definitely be "whats the storyline!"... i think not. It realistically shows how our Military would react to the situation to the most realistic level possible and although the story is lacking it still pulls you in and doesn't let go until the credits roll.As far as the CGI goes i find it AMAZING, there have been countless alien movies that have fallen short of even decent. The aliens in this movie look very realistic and behave nearly like humans in the way they co-ordinate their infantry and even at one part are pulling a wounded member out of harms way. Giving them less of a "Brainless Enemy" feel and a rather intelligent, strong opponent.I believe this movie is a milestone in sci-fi action and will be nearly impossible to compete with. This movie is great with nearly minor downfalls compared to its stunning action and fight for humanity.I would easily respect it by giving it 9 out of 10.
I enjoyed this movie very much. It was orders of magnitude better than "Independance Day" although that movie had a broader scope. B:LA gave us the Warriors eye view of the battle. I would also describe it as the best USMC Recruiting movie in a long time. There were technical 'goofs' but the movie was so entertaining and caught me up in the characters so well that only one goof bugged me during the movie. The rest of the technical errors were perceived after calm reflection. This is definitely an "action" movie that is gritty in its realism. The equipment seems <more>
right on as far as my knowledge base goes. I have to believe that there were "grunts" among the technical advisors. One of the best scenes, as a credit to the actors, was right at the beginning of the movie where they are heading into battle riding in a CH-46 helo. They all look 'scared' which is a credit to their acting or they might have actually been riding in a "Frog"! The technical goof I caught during the movie was the Laser designator having a visible beam. My understanding is the military uses LDs operating outside of the visible spectrum. The continuity error was the five man 'charge' where the Nantz character switches to his pistol and the next scene is before he does that. The high points of the movie were the depiction of the Marines and their unit spirit. Even though some doubt their senior NCO, they fast-rope down to seek the C&C center with him in spite of him saying he would go it alone. Also, unlike many movies in the past, when the new Lt. is doing a low-level freak-out, his NCO encourages and supports him. There is no Hollywood type 'confrontation'.Some comments I have read already say in one sentence that there is no character development and in the next sentence say the movie is too long! One can't have it both ways! The movie makers correctly chose to stick with the action and it worked.I thought the actors all did a great job. Movies with little dialogue and what there is of it is terse are probably not popular with the performers but it challenges their acting skills more.
I would like to say that this movie lives up to you're expectations if you are expecting the right things. This is an alien invasion movie so you must remember that throughout the movie. It is similar to Skyline but better and on that note Skyline was not a bad movie. When I go to see a movie like this I expect big booms and big aliens and that is what you get from this movie. I rate it an 8 out of 10 for alien invasion style movies. They all cant be Independence Day! The story line is a little tired but what else is there really to talk about in a story like this. From the military <more>
aspect of it they show some nice weaponry which is always a plus. The aliens are pretty well done too. The film is a little jerky but who wants to watch still frames the whole time, you may as well watch a slide show if thats what you want. Well done!
Battle: Los Angeles or Enemy Invasion in EU countries is a pretty neat example of what you'll get if you combine camera style of "Cloverfield", basic plot of "The Independence Day" and the atmosphere of "Black Hawk Down" together. That would be it for most people if only the target audience wasn't familiar with video games and haven't recognized many influences mostly from Killzone and Crysis franchises. I'm not saying it's a bad thing - definitely something to make the movie more visible in the amounts of action flicks made these days. And <more>
probably the first one to get it right how to mix video games with movies - those familiar with those franchises will enjoy it even more, those who are not will never notice since those influences are not so explicitly shown throughout the movie. Even though somewhat cheesy, Battle: LA is one hell of an enjoyable ride. Especially for fans of Killzone, Crysis, Quake and, what the heck, even Gears of War and Halo. Jonathan Libesman never made any really noticeable movie but something tells me he's gonna make it with this one. 8 out of 10.
Okay this is not a movie about story, but surely it's obvious to see that in the trailers. This movie is about taking a location that is not really used for anything except soap operas and chick flicks and turning it into a battlefield. If you can cope with that then this movie isn't awful like a lot of people are saying. This movie has a lot of strengths for action lovers. The marines jump right into the fray within the first fifteen minutes or so and the action continues to pour in throughout most of the movie. Firefights, marine maneuvers, communication and motions, and actual <more>
strategies are incorporated into this movie, which was the director's goal in this project. Yes, there are some obvious solutions to the problem, aka nuke the zone, but then that wouldn't be a really long movie would it? Continuing on, another key factor that is seen is the brotherhood that soldiers have between their own platoon and the friendships that they make. Combine that with the action and you get the suspense that makes you connect with the characters hoping each one survives. Heck you may even pick a favorite character to root for in hopes they survive. Another strong point is that the movie keeps going, with very little slow scenes in the mix, so again action lovers will love it. Yes it kind of causes the story line to be narrowed out, but again you shouldn't expect a story from this kind of movie. Weak points from this movie start with the choppy camera action used to record this movie. It's filmed with moving with the soldiers and is really quick and spastic. If you get motion sickness, then you may not want to watch this movie. Next up the dialogue is very cheesy at some points. They try to bring comedy relief in the intense situation to keep you from getting too depressed in the film. But let's face it dialogue today isn't really written in the best sense, aka half the lines on Glee and other comedies of today. Get past that and again the movie isn't that bad, in fact you can actually laugh at how ridiculous the lines are which lightens the mood a little. Again I've already mentioned there is no real story to it, but again it's one of the action film fan's audience. Not too mention it really is hard to get a good alien invasion storyline that hasn't been done or isn't a marvel comic. Another weakness can be a little of the poor acting in this movie and the overacting at certain scenes. The parts where aliens aren't trying to blow your head off can make you roll your eyes, but that's with any movie really. Another weakness is there is some predictability to it, especially when it comes to death scenes and as a result you may guess who is going to die next. However, what movie doesn't have some predictability to it. The last thing to comment on is the graphics of the movie. For the most part the aliens are obviously CGI, but they are done pretty well from what I can tell. I'm no expert in the field, but it looks pretty decent and I have to say I don't have the eye to tell green screen from actual models. Overall I enjoyed the movie, I've been an action lover for a long time, but have branched out in recent years mind you. This movie is exciting, action packed, and has a strong message of brotherhood in the marine life. I think it captures some military lifestyles and situations, but again I don't know. Yes, I know nuclear warfare is obvious, but again you want a movie you go for the more extreme case. As long as you can get over the cheesy dialogue and the lack of story, then I think you will enjoy this movie. Overall I give it an 8 out of 10.
