Beware the Darkness of the Human Heart (by gstards)
This film was a really tough experience, which I can compare to the previous works of a genuine director Guillermo Del Toro - Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone. I watched this film in a cinema, and I was experiencing on myself all that darkness and helplessness, which saturate it. The main question, on what director tries to find the answer, is still the same - what beast is more cruel, human or monster ghost, in our case ? This is the question of the non-pronounced trilogy of Guillermo Del Toro's Gothic films. And the Crimson Peak is completely worthy of his ancestors. It <more>
offers the really interesting and sensual story, which is incredibly touching. This picture definitely features one of the best performances of Jessica Chastain. The actress definitely did the great job to do her character a believably mystic and truly insidious figure. When she will appear on screen, trust me, you all will focus your attention on her, so colorful and brilliant performance this is. Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska also did an incredible job of portraying their characters. Tom plays also a mysterious figure, who appears to be more sympathetic and, well, good, but who knows what hides his heart... And Mia did a great job of playing someone, who will take us in the labyrinths of the charms of madness, which rules in the dark corners of Crimson Peak. The chemistry between this trio - Tom, Jessica and Mia - is just mesmerizing. The soundtrack is something which doesn't so touch you in the film like, well, Pan's Labirynth, but the one thing will definitely touch you right in the heart - the lullaby performed by Jessica Chastain. This song just creeped me out. You MUST listen to this.Art directors and CGI animators did a great job of portraying the ghosts. The ghosts are real, and you will see it in the Crimson Peak. This film is totally stunning in terms of visuals.Guillermo del Toro, again, proved me that he is a true master of his craft. He created the story of darkness, passion, love, desperation. This bloody masterpiece worthily closes his unspoken trilogy about the wickedness of man, which sometimes overshadow even the whole cosmic horror of supernatural entities, dwelling in the Unknown.
A hauntingly beautiful love story. (by aimee-837-243757)
As usual Guillermo del Toro delivers a beautiful tale of unexpected love, sorrow, twist and passion in the most alluring way. It is worth a watch if you are looking for a movie that would sucks you in and delivers an enchanting tale of a wildly women named Edith and how she found love in the most unexpected way. Tom Hiddleston plays this role so well. Charming and kind in the most handsome manner. If you love reading Edger Poe then this is the movie for you. It has no "frightening horror" and don't expect a typical "ghost" story because it is not. This is a deeper type <more>
of movie. The type that you would walk out of the cinema and go... " wow! That was an amazing movie!!"
A Visual Masterpiece from Guillermo del Toro! (by nikhilgeorge-e)
Crimson Peak is a visual masterpiece from the director. The only reason I watched the movie was the director. He has a great sense to create unique worlds and his ability to balance CGI and makes his vision to reality. The acting is superb, all the characters doing their part very well. Jessica Chastain however, did really well with creating a cold and memorable character which really makes the movie more interesting. She is the real Jewel of the movie.Locations and costumes are outstanding. All in all Crimson Peak is another masterpiece from the director Guillermo del Toro.
Del Toro did it again (by lacvegas)
Just for the record, i'm not a fan of horror movies. The only reason i watched Crimson Peak was the director: Guillermo Del Toro. His previous movies showed that he is a genius whose mind is filled with creativity, moreover he is able to turn his visions into reality. He has a great sense to create unique worlds and his ability to balance CGI and practical effects makes these worlds more existing.I was terrified and amazed at the same time. Visually this movie is unexceptional, i wanted to carefully examine every piece of it, but the scary theme didn't "allow" me to immerse <more>
deep in this visual beauty for too long. The tension was built up well and constant fear of the unknown was in the air all the time. Music was a very good "wingman" of the thrill and well-timed sound effects added even more to the overall experience. Many famous trademarks of Del Toro were smuggled into the events successfully. The sets, make ups, costumes looked amazing, but for me the most impressing was the creative use of colours. The external and internal design of the house ensured a perfect environment for the creepy atmosphere. This atmosphere was the major element that captivated me from the beginning till the end. That thrill that carried me through the movie is hard to describe. I was under the influence of fear and anxiety, so all elements were in the right place to make your heart beat faster.Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska were great, but Jessica Chastain was clearly the one who almost stole the whole show. Her character was cold, seductive, mysterious and scary at the same time. I couldn't even decide whether to love or hate her.All in all, Crimson Peak is another masterpiece of Del Toro. I recommend this movie even for those who don't like horror movies, because this is one of the few that offers much more than jump scares and unimaginative stories.
The obsession creates monsters! (by mariya-mustafaeva)
I have been waiting for the movie since may, when i first watched the trailer. It was fascinating from the first moment, despite i do not like horror movies, i felt that it hides something special. And i was right! It is Gothic romance with elements of horror and the key role takes the relations and deep feelings between people. The movie is extremely enchanted. You are submerging to the Victorian era from the first moment, it was like to buy a ticket to the past. The atmosphere is full with mystery and anxiety. The main role here takes the castle. It is unbelievably beautiful, but at the same <more>
dark and frightening. I have got the most aesthetic enjoy i ever had.Jessica as Lucille is the best in here. You can't take a look out of her. Even Tom is in the shadow in comparison with her. Her demonic nature hides under the fatal appearance. Tom's performance is perfect as always. He plays Thomas Sharpe - a gentleman with immaculate manners - his eyes are full with sorrow. I will not say too much about him, in order not to reveal all the secrets.Just Mia was a little disappointed. I didn't fill her intense position. She acted superficial. This is only minus i caught.Overrall, the beautiful lyrical story is worth seeing.
This is the kind of "horror" movie that I like! Well "horror"..it's not really scary, no violence compared to SAW, HOSTEL, VACANCY, DESCENT etc. , not even gore compared to EVID DEAD 2, BRAINDEAD etc. .So what is it? A marvelous movie with beautiful picture, sets, actors and special effects. Everything lies within the old fashioned climax, like a clever revival of HAMMER FILMS. It's as classy as Coppola's Dracula.. It's everything The Haunting DeBont and Wolfman Johnston failed to be. It reminds me of the good "Woman in Black" and <more>
"Don't be Afraid of the Dark", with Del Toro behind the camera.Well, Hammer lovers, Del Toro fans..just run to see this movie!
Guillermo del Toro is a director and artist whose films fall into two distinct categories: big budget English language blockbusters like "Hellboy" and "Pacific Rim" and lesser known, low budget Spanish language horror films like "Devil's Backbone" and "Pan's Labyrinth". His latest film, "Crimson Peak" is what happens when these two worlds collide, in other words, a big budget English language horror film."Crimson Peak" is set in the late 19th century, first in New York, then in rural England. Edith Cushing Mia Wasikowska is <more>
a young budding writer who is intelligent, beautiful, and strong willed, refusing to allow Victorian sensibilities dictate what she can and cannot do, and as a result butts heads with those around her. Thomas Sharpe Tom Hiddleston is an English aristocrat and inventor who is in New York seeking financial backing for his mechanized clay mining business back home. When tragedy strikes, Thomas marries Edith and brings her to his home, Allerdale Hall in Cumberland, where his sister Lucille Sharpe Jessica Chastain is waiting. As Edith tries to fit into her new surroundings, she discovers that secrets abound and nothing is as it seems. The visuals in "Crimson Peak" are so glorious, they are almost overwhelming. The sets are spectacular visions of beauty and decadence in decay; costumes are intricately detailed and gorgeous; the lighting and over saturated color bring depth and meaning; the ghosts are grotesquely beautiful; and, of course, the del Toro trademarks of insects and clockwork gracefully found their way into the story as well.Because "Crimson Peak" is a rather large studio production, it is being marketed to a large audience. I believe this accounts for some of the lackluster reviews I have been reading. If one is not familiar with del Toro's prior Spanish language films, they may not understand his unique cinematic perspective. For some, this will mark the beginning of a journey into del Toro's fantasy world, for others it will be a disappointment. For me, it was almost everything I wanted it to be.
A dark love story with a splash of gore. (by jackypetters)
Crimson is "of a rich deep red color inclining to purple". It's a color of passionate love, seduction, violence, danger, anger, and adventure - all of which are contained in Del Toro's latest film, Crimson Peak.Guillermo del Toro is no stranger to adding detailed elements in a film to add depth, subtle or not. In Crimson Peak, his use of color and setting accompany the characters in a dark Gothic tale of love and deceit, with a sprinkle of suspense and gore that take the viewer on an enchanting experience. Rich color tones stylize the film for a gritty and unique ambiance. <more>
Edith, the main heroine, lives in a world where everything is dull and dark. But her presence, however, is evident in subdued yellows, greens, and neutral colors as she stands out in the world she resides in. Her pale skin and light hair also attribute to the innocence that she attains. The story itself takes the viewer down a dark path, following the love between two people from two different worlds. Del Toro was smart with the balance of action and build up. For just a brief time did the story feel slow, but it later facets to the build up of later scenes. Although this film wasn't as thrilling as I tend to prefer, it did a beautiful job of telling a dark love story that held hints of violence, making it just as enjoyable. I couldn't help but feel that Del Toro paid homage to some of the classics, such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, and even his own Pans Labyrinth and Mama with his use of transitions, shadows, symbolism, and sound. If you're looking for a film that is romantic with a dredge of somber, makes you uncomfortable yet hopeful, leaves you heartbroken but still enamored - all while being visually breathtaking, then Crimson Peak should be at the top of your list.
A great film and welcome break from the jump scare flicks (by Jerghal)
I was getting pretty sick of those jump-scare-there's-something-lurking-in-a-dark-corner style movies like Insidious and the Conjuring. And Guillermo Del Toro must have thought the same thing because Crimson Peak is a gorgeous looking Gothic style movie with awesomely designed sets which have an incredible amount of detail to them. This adds a great dark and brooding atmosphere to the film and alleviates the need for these aforementioned jump scares. The story is well written and has great characters played by Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston and other well cast actors. Unfortunately it got <more>
only moderate critical reviews and was also somewhat ignored by the audience in favor of Goosebumps no less. Damn kids, they ruin everything! wink emoticonBut it might get a second life in the video circuit as people might still discover this very enjoyable movie. Big thumbs up for me!
