Powerful. Compelling. But hard to watch. (by j-m-arnold) |
I saw this movie at Sundance and thought it was one of the most powerful, compelling and darkest movies I have ever seen. It is the one movie I remember clearly from the festival; my memory of the others are fading.I also found the story to be filled with suspense. Could what the clues are telling you about Nancy's plans possibly be true. Is she really planning what we think? Will she go through with it? Will her husband find her beforehand. Will her internet friend go through with it? The suspense builds to the end with some surprising twists.Maria Bellow is extraordinary. I hope that <more> |
Compelling story of tortured soul (by screamingfoot) |
I imagine a lot of religious types would hate this movie and comment on it without even seeing it solely based on their beliefs, which is kind of ironic when you think about it. I would expect even most of the more secular types would hate this film because it IS hard to watch and atypical of most movies that have either a clear message or a protagonist who somehow manages to succeed. The truth is, this film is very hard to watch but is a very well made film that allows us into the world of a woman fraught with pain the likes of which I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Who among us could <more> |
Intense! This movie takes a look inside a well hidden disease. (by kvolkart) |
The suspense and curiosity is what kept me watching!Maria's character, "Nancy" portrays true-to-life behavior that leaves you wandering ...will she really do it...cut herself...kill herself? This is clearly a movie with a hidden message that reveals actual behavioral traits from a disease, a topic, that most are not willing to discuss as they fear being shunned. As the movie ends, you may find yourself asking "how can someone do that?" The answer is simple... those that suffer will go to every length to keep you from knowing. Yes, people you live and work aroundÂ… Will <more> |
Right next to "Requiem for a dream" (by dschmeding) |
If i compare these two movies I don't do it for their plot or their visuals. Far from that.... "Downloading Nancy" is a visually ugly movie with washed out colors, ugly sets and no gimmicks whatsoever... close to no music but an ambient score fading in and out, sometimes swelling louder. There is no drugs, no TV-Shows, no mothers, no ambitions.... none of that but still I didn't miss anything. What links these movies together is the impact. I have rarely seen a movie with so much empathy and insight beside Arronowskys Masterpiece. This movie is not so much about Nancy, a <more> |
At wits end Part 3 of 3 (by TheHrunting) |
When the printing press was invented it spread media quicker and farther than ever before. Fast forward to the information age where written documents as well as ways of communicating went digital from the invention of the computer and then a way to connect them to others: The Internet. Writing letters turned into e-mails and inked articles went way of text on a blog. This story uses the modern way of communicating and connecting to others but as an outlet for darker reasons rather than opportunity or forward outlooks. And what makes this tale so haunting is that is was inspired by real <more> |
Well crafted, but very depressing (by rlaine) |
I'm gonna start out by saying that this may be the most depressing and distressing movie I've ever seen and I've seen a few. It hit me from behind, I had no idea what I was about to watch. Sure, there are movies about for example the holocaust s and some powerful horror movies, but this movie managed to beat them to it. I was a bit surprised about the low score, as this really is such a well crafted movie that it deserves better. Altho I understand some may be put off by it's absolute bleakness. It's slow, and it's very hard to watch. On the negative side, there is a <more> |
This was hard for me to watch, but I watched it anyways (by whitfld64) |
I think this was pretty accurate to what happens with online dating. In this arena, you have a lot of people that may not be the most adept at in-person relationships, but they are willing to commit to and follow through with promises from online-relationships. This is an example of that case. The problem with being online is that you can publish your innermost thoughts 24/7; even at times when you probably should not. However, the person who gets your communication doesn't know the difference between those times you really mean it and those times when you don't.If you are the kind of <more> |
A destructive pact (by stensson) |
It's hard to decide whether this is a failure or not. I finally came to the conclusion that it's not.Nancy has been sexually abused as a child. She lives in a completely cold and dead marriage. She cuts herself. Then, she gets into this pact with a stranger on the net. What follows is a carousel of destruction. But is it really destruction? It's a fantastic acting performance here by Maria Bello, Rufus Sewell and Jason Patric. It's like a documentary with pale colors, no sign of hope, no sign of healing. It's a movie about existentialism, but it balances on a thin line <more> |
A sad portrait of a woman tormented by life. (by JimmyCollins) |
The title DownloadingNancy does nothing for this film, I wish the writer could have come up with something more polished because the title doesn't do the film any justice. That is literally the only thing wrong with this disturbing but excellent film.Maria Bello is on top of her game as Nancy, a woman who is tormented by life, a woman who has given up hope of ever finding happiness, Bello has never been better than she is here, it's such a shame that this film went unnoticed because I'm sure she would've been a frontrunner for all of the big awards. She totally embodies this <more> |
