Loved it! (by hybridpick) |
Outstanding movie with moving performances by Ben Foster and Elle Fanning. You would have to be dead inside not to feel the pain conveyed by these outstanding actors. Great story, great acting. Please don't miss this gem of a movie. |
Logline does a disservice to this AMAZING film (by goldi-38533) |
If I had read this logline first, I would have passed on watching this incredible film. It is NOT an action drama about a hitman seeking revenge, and anyone thinking it is will be sorely disappointed likely the reason for the low rating and some of the negative reviews here . It is a poignant, gritty crime drama about a mob enforcer seeking redemption. Heartbreaking, haunting and hopeful in the end, it is worth watching for the performance of Elle Fanning alone. The characters are well-drawn, the acting superb, the writing is compelling and the directing is intelligent - focussing on the <more> |
Pulp Noir Masterpiece (by leftbanker-1) |
First of all, you really, really need to read the novel by Nic Pizzolatto before you watch this. It is simply a pulp noir masterpiece as I mentioned in the title to this review .As with most great books put on the big screen, I usually hate them, or want to hate them. I began this film with a bit of trepidation. The initial action scene I felt was rushed and not done with the precision of the novel. The girl wasn't right, or so I thought. I felt the film was sagging after the initial fury. But then the movie regained its footing and I was driven forward.I think a lot of the negative <more> |
Poignant and powerful movie (by searchanddestroy-1) |
It's a true film noir, crime film, that I am talking now. A road movie too, pulled by a French film director, female film director, whose I will comment another movie: DIVING. That will be tomorrow, Watch out on Imdb. This one of a very sensitive and moving love story, but not as you may expect. A depressing and not very hopeful film. A former gangster is on the run in Texas and meets a young girl who runs also away with her little sister. Melanie Laurent gives here a true lesson of dramatization in this feature inspired by a novel. |
Shockingly Intelligent (by the-real-max-g-force) |
It's hard to believe a movie this smart got made. It's not going to be a big money maker due to how mature and sophisticated the story is, the average mouth breathing popcorn muncher will not understand it. Every character, situation, reaction and outcome is absolutely real. As a result it causes the viewer to experience real emotions while they're watching it, and after. If you're capable of focusing on just one thing for 90 minutes, then I can recommend you watch Galveston. If you're a phone fiddler then don't bother. |
I love it, but I'll never watch it for the second time. (by 404pages) |
A silent, sad story. Too real. I love it, but I'll never watch it for the second time. |
Outstanding true filmmaking you don't see coming from Hollywood nowadays. (by TheTopDawgCritic) |
I was expecting a Hollywood ending, and didn't get it, yet I appreciate this film even more because of it.This film was an outstanding true film noir Google it and the finest in filmmaking you don't see made in Hollywood anymore, as today's viewers wan't more action and thrills. I am one of those people, and I can't stand slow paced films, but this film is that one rare exception. It's an emotional roller coaster ride that leaves you wanting more, and although it doesn't fulfill your expectations at the end, it's still a rare true artistic gem of a <more> |
Damn Good Movie (by phillyslugga) |
This is one of the best flicks I have watched in a long time. The story is excellent and the acting is excellent. Definitely worth watching. |
Understand noir before you watch... (by bairjohn) |
This film has so many levels it may seem slow moving to some, for me it was close to perfect as a dark film. The acting is impeccable, Ben Foster was spot on through out, and really gave validity to his part. Elle Fanning did a wonderful job, and her dramatic style was spot on. Even Beau Bridges cameo was done well. The directing held a perfect rhythm, and the end was spot on...there were a few places in production or editing that did slow the story line, and a few minor scene issues that is why I gave it an 8, but would watch again. |
