Fast paced found footage flick/ Rare decent horror sequel (by alkjunkie)
Found footage films aren't for everyone. Horror sequels are usually terrible at best. This film, Grave Encounters 2, proved to me that a good found footage sequel can happen. The directing, writing, and constant barely a dull damn moment scares is what pulled this one along. The acting is, well, better than most found footage films, but it's still shite compared to the first film. You barely give a damn about any of these new characters. It's not that they're not like-able, but it's just that the film moves in such a fast pace that you don't even have time to get to <more>
know them. Personally, I didn't mind that fact in this flick. I wanted more pure ghost chaos in lieu of character development anyway. Unlike most found footage flicks, this one throws the stereotypical "campy" approach out the window. By doing this, this film may be able to grasp the attention of the horror buffs that usually have no patience for the average found footage flick. As a horror flick fanatic, I highly recommend this.
better than the original, great plot, scary effects, my boyfriend and I were VERY happy with this movie. I watch tons of horror movies and its been a while since one i truly would watch again and again. I liked the characters, the story was interesting, and the effects were very real looking, there is somewhat of a surprise ending which make the whole thing come together. I've seen so many asylum movies with all the same things but Grave encounters 2 sets the bar a bit higher for Haunted Insane Asylum Movies. The whole story isn't just people wanding around in the asylum losing their <more>
mind, their is a believable and intriguing introduction to the movie which really grabs your attention. Grave encounters will always be a favorite for me.
A great follow-up to the original! (by Michael-Hallows-Eve)
I couldn't wait to see this film as I loved the first, so I had high hopes for the sequel.....and I wasn't disappointed. This was brilliant as it used the first movie and made fun of it to the advantage of this one. It was tongue and cheek and as you watch you're left thinking that this film isn't going to be as good as the original, and how are they going to tie them together, but then you find out how and it takes on a whole other element. This sequel is just as good as the first, and in fact it may be better in some ways. The story is set years after the first and it <more>
explains more of the original, and there's a nice little surprise halfway through. I highly recommend this film, and I give it a 9 out of 10.
this movie was good enough to watch all the way through (by livinhiphopanonymous)
9 because they needed a bigger budget for this type of film, it's a different story all together then the first one. Grave encounters was filmed in '03, released in '11, a ghost hunting film finding evidence of ghosts, a movie made to look like a T.V. show. Grave Encounters 2 is a movie made to look like a documentary about film school, which eventually turns into a nightmare hiding around the corners in an asylum, It's all about Alex, a film director who searches to uncover a conspiracy theory, that the film Grave Encounters was real and not just a film, with the help of his <more>
friends who care about him and his opinions. The fact that they bash and honor the film was funny, the "spirit board" part freaked me out, mainly because i know a few people who tried it out and don't like talking about it. The story is Fudged, because dying and then coming back as an invisible being is impossible. They were portraying normal people who do normal things till it gets paranormal. Nobody really knows what to do when you see something that should'nt be there so we run in the opposite direction.
Unlike all the dashers I enjoyed this one and lots will too, despite the negative "reviews"... Bad acting? Who of you critic casters can act better? Surely not all that wrote or will write negatively about this movie and others. Just because they are purely driven by their own divine and oh so self righted personal feelings and views who they elevate to the supreme truth. One can only feel sorry for them or that kind of behavior. The value of their "review" is then also instantly reduced to zero.Liked the movie, despite its predicament or the slower moving tempo of the <more>
first half or the drops in acting -if any-.A third one could explain some of the still open gaps in the story/history but should be as good or even better than the last installment of it, regardless it's good, great, bad or magnificent.I look forward to the Gravee Encounter 3!
A Fun Ride with a few story problems (by danteasdale458)
Grave Encounters 2The first Grave Encounters was a horror phenomenon from 2011. A VOD video on demand release, and limited theatrical, that scared the pants off tons of people. Grave Encounters 2 takes place almost ten years after it.For those of you not familiar with the first one, its about a group of paranormal investigators, called Grave Encounters, set to film the final episode of their show. In the beginning it's clearly shown that the TV show is a pretty big failure. None of the cast actually believe in the paranormal and are clearly just doing it for the money.Grave Encounters 2 <more>
takes the " it's real and we need to prove it" style. Film student and reviewer Alex does a negative video review of the original film. He receives a message on his YouTube channel from one known as "Death Awaits" explaining that the film is real with links to websites explaining it. He becomes obsessed with the film and wants to find out if Grave Encounters is real or not.He decides to phone Lances mother Lance was the spokesman who apparently died from the first film and she invites them over for an interview with her son. After being invited into her home, Alex's crew sets up for an interview and asks to speak with Lance."He will be right back!" "Can we check out his room?"The group gets kicked out of the room by the house sitter. After they explain they got permission from Lance's mother, the house sitter says that she has had dementia for over 10 years and her son has been missing for almost a decade.Alex sets up an interview with the producer of the first film who says he will talk to him off camera. Alex sneaks a very small black and white camera with him to the interview."We never changed anything, outside of a few special effects that were added." Admitting that it was actually real.Alex thinks to himself: "None of the actors were in other movies before or after this. Everyone was reported missing. Not a single member was found."Alex gets another message from "Death Awaits" giving him the exact longitude and latitude of the building and says for him and his friends to meet him inside the building at 3am. He decides to bring his four friends and crew with him to meet "Death Awaits" inside the building to have an interview with him. When they arrive, a cop immediately stops them and tells them to leave, demanding the tape they are filming on. They speedily drive away and almost run the cop over in the process. They decide to go to the building at about 1am to get some footage before meeting up with "Death Awaits". Walking to the front door, they notice the phrase "Death Awaits" on the door. They use bolt cutters to get into the building. After setting up multiple cameras throughout the building and doing some EVP readings, they get nothing.Closing in on 3am, they go to meet their contact "Death Awaits". They wait for about over an hour but he doesn't show. Alex's friend Jennifer notices an Ouija board under some newspapers. They decide to use it. "Is there anyone here with us?" The board immediately spells out "Death Awaits". The events start going nuts from there. The first Grave Encounters took the slow approach. It started slow and built suspense until its awesome final act. The 2nd Grave Encounters doesn't do that. It hits you hard 30 minutes into it and doesn't let go. It's much faster paced then the original. The ghosts are even more creepy this time around and there are a lot more appropriate jump scares. I also liked how they brought in some footage from the original. After a few deaths, the rest of the crew ends up finding Lance Preston. He's apparently been hiding in the building for over nine years. What has he been doing? And why? This is where the film takes a turn for the worst. It's tries far to hard to weave the two movies together. It's explanation isn't very clear and doesn't make much sense. It's hard to review it without giving much away now."You must finish the film!"It seems the director took many ideas from Chronicle as well. There were parts where the camera floated behind someone and gathered footage. There was a part in Chronicle when the main character used his telekinetic powers to grab everyone's cameras and have them rotate around him while filming. Grave Encounters 2 does just that. Something grabs all of the available cameras and has them film everything around Lance. It looked exactly like Chronicle.I look at the film in four acts, and its the 3rd act that messes up the film from being the brilliant horror sequel it wants and could have been. The 3rd act ruins the pacing and gives us answers that don't make much sense and just aren't explained logically. That being said I still enjoyed it a lot. The film makers managed to take the exact same location from the 1st one and bring in a lot of great new ideas. It was generally scary and very fast paced. The acting was really good too, especially from characters Alex and Lance. While I'm sure you could have fun with it without seeing the first one, I would highly recommend watching the first one before this. There are loads of references and you need to be familiar with certain characters to fully understand the ending.Overall it's a fast paced thrill ride full of great performances and lots of scary moments.
I thought Grave Encounters was one of the scariest and most original horror films produced recently. It's not like all the other crap that gets released in this genre and I think that's why it really stands out for some people. The sequel did not disappoint. It stays true to it's roots and delivers what some people may have thought the original lacked. More scares. More disturbance. My only gripe would be the direction given to one of the actors who shall remain nameless for fear of spoilage . I know this man is capable of more and I felt the directors should have went a slightly <more>
different route.Other than that... if you liked the original - I highly recommend the sequel.
Great sequel..Do not watch the trailer if possible! (by rjwilli1414)
I saw this having seen the first movie but not the trailer and having now watched the trailer, I am thrilled I didn't see it ahead of time, because that really would have cut down on the surprises I got from the film. The vicious brothers did both films but its hard to believe despite a couple similar scares. These take nothing away from the movie though as there is shock after shock as this plot goes along. Perhaps there were a few too many scare moments but I didn't mind. The first half hour of the movie might make u wonder if your in the right theater but be patient because the <more>
setup is awesome and worth it. Getting to know the characters prior to the asylum is a nice addition missing from the first film. The characters could have used more growth and the acting could've been better but I can't knock it much because of the many great improvements from the first. This is a must see if you so much as kindve liked the first movie. Only one part did I predict and that's the elevator scene you'll see ..but one of the coolest things was that there was scare moments that reminded me of a lot of other scary movies yet all still being from the same type of evil which was rather fantastic.Overall comparison to 1st film: Better story, better acting, better scares, totally different and impressively improved Lance, and much more.8/10
