I logged in for the first time here just to ballance an injustice. This movie deserves much more than this rating.I first read the User Reviews, then I crossed my fingers for Al Pacino and I clicked "Play". For me, the movie is in "I want more, I wish a few series of it" category. I have no idea why, I would say it's a movie for cat-lovers only, since it has such bad reviews, they may come from dog-lovers ... I took delight in many Al Pacino's replies, I will remember them as he told them, with his voice, with his accent ... The car races are not an important part <more>
of the movie, I remember no one of them, because the accent is on the action, not on the cars. The lady journalist is just a believer: you relate or not with her, any believing is a choice. I expected her to be more stupid as any journalist character in such movies , bunt no, she is surprisingly decent. And yes, believers do exist, that's the realism of the movie. The cop played by Karl Urban is quite ok. No need for an acting to top Al Pacino's. It's not about the cop, it's about each of them: of course, they are not all seductive, the young people do not need seductiveness, the old one do: that's realistic too. The accent of the acting means nothing to me, since I am not an American. In the end, I thought: well, it may be like eating kidneys: some people adore them, some people can't stand them, but all cat lovers should keep some in their fridge. For me, the movie was "purrrfect" :
Succinct and highly suspenseful serial killer movie (by robertemerald)
Al Pacino has a way of becoming larger than he needs be in many of his movies, but in this one he is restrained and quirky and extremely likeable. He contrasts well with the other two leads, the strikingly original character of the reporter following the detectives, and the lead detective whom is slightly damaged but intelligent and quick to thread the needle to keep the investigation on track. Both are played by superb actors. This is a fast moving film, tight and almost ingeniously plotted, with a good script and story and a diabolical villein that just keeps getting cleverer and cleverer, <more>
the detectives straining every resource to keep up. There is great action, two great car chases, and great heart as well, sensibly not over-played. Great tension. I'm giving it a 10 for overall originality and purity of vision. This is possibly the best serial killer movie I've seen this year.
It was the best serial killer movie, Al Pacino was amazing.

Don't let the bad reviews deter you (by stevencameron-50334)
I really enjoyed the movie. Suspenseful, and Pacino is fantastic as always.
Psychotic game (by jirimoucka)
Psychotic game of boy, whose father hung himself in his early age. His father's suicide by ceremoniously accepted. his psychosis grew the idea of the ceremony, in which he will decide about the lives of others and selected individual sacrifice in favor of the father's spirit. ceremony takes place in the hour of his father's death and, if possible, a day to the fulfillment of the words of the evictionem, wildcard rights over the fate of the. The victims chosen in accordance with the symbolism of the ceremony according to personal characters, names, occurrence of, the profession. <more>
The symbolism depends on the only clue to his person. Looking old detective about your will together with the detective intended and a journalist.
A classic crime thriller, the kind I'll watch again (by JohnRayPeterson)
I don't get why so many rated this movie so poorly on IMDb so far , I just don't get it. Okay, some may have been turned off by Pacino's performance and have mentioned he was passed his prime, but even past his prime he is still Pacino and he can do a better job than most, besides he has not much more, perhaps even less, screen time as Detective Archer than Karl Urban and Brittany Snow, the other main headlining actors. I was satisfied with Pacino's performance and I'll go see his next movie.Director Johnny Martin has much experience in the movie biz even if this is only <more>
his fifth directorial foray; he has co-produced many more, has also a lot of experience in stunts. He got a good script from Charles Huttinger and Michael Caissie, then proceeded to make it happen in the best of traditional suspense directing, at least as good as I can recall. Thing is I don't see enough movies in the genre with this kind of suspense and textbook dramatic building to the final scenes. So I just eat it up if the director and cast don't screw it up; they certainly didn't here.Karl Urban steals the show, as detective Ruiney, with an outstanding performance. His name may not be familiar to some but once they start watching the movie, his face will rapidly come back to mind thanks to his better known past characters in Star Trek, The Bourne Supremacy and many more, it no doubt will. He has one of those classic looks that can match directors specific needs. He is undoubtedly a lead character actor, so being paired with Pacino was a plus as far as this movie goes.Brittany Snow rounds off the lead trio with a flawless performance as Christie Davies, and thankfully her character in 'Hangman' was no fluff, but rather one which provided richness to the story. She plays a strong journalist, embedded with the detectives. Her character has a fascinating backstory and she acquits herself splendidly. I'm glad the writers wrote this part as they have and it just wouldn't be the same without it. I looked up her filmography and she clearly had much experience as an actor; it shows. I hope she gets more parts like this because she can deliver. The plot is simple but it's the suspense building and the development of the key characters that makes it a winner in my book. A serial killer, one calculating and sick criminal, sets out on revenge killing that involves both detectives, though one, Pacino, was retired early in the movie and the other going through a difficult period in his life. We do not know of their involvement until the story reveals it later, but the motive remains the intrigue, as much as who he is. His predetermined spree of seven intended victims reminded me of the highly successful 1995 movie 'Se7en' and another 1995 classic serial killer thriller 'The Usual Suspects'.I stand by the rating I gave the movie and I highly recommend it, of course. Sorry for the spoiler, but I hope it makes up for the cumulative/average 4.9 rating at the time I wrote this review and get you to see it.
This movie was great in my opinion. Somehow it reminds me of the good old classic : The Bone Collector It was a little predictable, but still nice scenes, i was entertained 95% of the movie, i would recommend it for sure.
Dark Murder Mystery (by jjryzler)
Maybe I feel comforted by sombre movies Not so much people dying unless they were annoying someone. This movie being the classic detective trail type does go out of its way to frustrate any real law enforcement.Constantly contaminating crime scenes, overlooking major evidence, not once did they try to ... OK you watch I no spoiler, not once did I see a Field kit, they knew the whereabouts of the perpetrator first couple times but didn't bother the next few...Now people are OK with blood and guts on TV movies right? So why not make these detective shows a little more real. I mean if that is <more>
realistic then serious lack of skills here.Maybe they think that a murderer might get ideas on how to avoid capture? OK but once again the motives in most movies are the same so why not address those? Money, Sex, ...um what else is there? if you think about it the core often are those things. The WANT more than the other. Envy, spite, greed... Se7en another good movie if you like this one.Where is the line between the person was killed by someone who knew what they were doing, on purpose, fully aware and the killer was mislead and tormented into doing it.The courts have heard a lot of "The Devil made me do it" if they don't believe that or investigate that then get rid of all churches and "In god we trust" from the currency. After all God created the Devil. How else would God do what God does and keep a clean reputation? The good dye young because they didn't have time to become corrupted. When corrupted they can compare what was lost Hell Many don't get out and those who do then have to put up with those who cant or wont.
