The best horror-mystery to ever feature a Shish Kebab!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (by CinemaAmoreStar) |
Happy Birthday to Me is an often neglected and seldom viewed 80's cinema gem. It is a damn shame that it has not received the cult status it so solidly deserves. The plot involves cliques, prep schools, and a very weird birthday party, but that is not what is important here. What matters is all the stops director J. Lee Thompson pulled out to make this into a near masterpiece of the slasher genre.Let's begin with the topnotch cast. Melissa Sue Anderson of Little House on the Prairie bravely fills a leading role that is decidedly unclear about whether it is that of a protagonist or <more> |
Very Good Horror Movie! (by ProPlayer812) |
Happy Birthday To Me is a very good horror movie. Made in 1981, this thriller of a horror movie stars Melissa Sue Anderson and Glenn Ford as the most notables. The movies starts out with a bang and doesnt quit. Great plot, Killings, Settings, Atmosphere, Direction and a very well written story line. This movie is in the vein of some Italian Horror films. What can I say?? A very good movie that needs to be released on DVD!! |
I laughed, I cried, I peed my pants (by Pet_Rock) |
When I first rented this out, it was just as a little flame of entertainment- I wasn't expecting to have a new ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIE the time I was done! It's about a girl, Virginia, who is in the fabulous Top 10 students in Crawford Academy Virginia, Anne, Alfred, Steve, Rudy, Greg, Etienne, Amelia, and Bernadette . They are the top 10 richest, most popular kids in school. But Virginia is having problems. She freaks out while playing chicken, she's dealing with a departed mother, and she's having strange memories of past traumas. At the same time, someone is killing off <more> |
Much too clever of a slasher film for it's time. (by FrightMeter) |
I may take a lot of grief for saying this, but I firmly believe that Happy Birthday to Me is one of most intelligent and well acted slasher films of the 80's. I think the reason that it never made as much of an impact as films like Friday the 13th and Prom Night, which were released around the same time, is that is was just TOO intelligent for its time. It was released around the time when gore and body count is what made a slasher succeed. HBTM relied on plot twists and character development. This film is comparable to something that would be released and be successful today, where plot <more> |
Happy birthday to slasher fans (by Nightman85) |
Happy Birthday to Me is simply one of the best "body count" movies to pop up after the massive success of Halloween 1978 .Is lovely young Virginia Wainwright the shadowy murderer who is "offing" her elite group of college friends?Happy Birthday to Me stands head and shoulders above the average slasher film on a number of levels. What starts out as the standard slasher fare builds into to a surprisingly twisted thriller with strong tension! The conclusion of the film may just be one of the most "off-the-wall" endings in horror history! It's an effectively <more> |
Highly interesting and competent slasher! (by cmoore0013) |
Wow! What a shock! A movie that functions as both a wonderfully nasty slasher film and a competent, if not totally cohesive thriller. It's good script is aided by a game performance from Melissa Sue Anderson and the very reliable Glenn Ford. How this film has been lost all these years is a total mystery to me. It's a fine example of the slasher sub-genre's peak. The plot has tons of twists and turns and bizarrely unusual ending. The movie also has a real mean streak. No one is safe from the killer. The killer's black gloves also gives the film an Italian giallo feel, which helps <more> |
Another seriously underrated slasher flick. (by HumanoidOfFlesh) |
"Happy Birthday to Me" is a fabulous mystery/horror film.Melissa Sue Anderson stars as one of the members of an exclusive club at her high school. As her birthday approaches someone starts killing the members of the club in gory and inventive ways one by one. This movie has enough gore and suspense to satisfy most horror fans. The ending,in which the killer is revealed,is very surprising.Lush photography and above average acting set this excellent 80's slasher apart from its other 80's counterparts. The key to enjoying this movie is remembering that nothing is what it seems. All <more> |
A superior early 80's horror slasher sleeper (by Woodyanders) |
Sweet and innocent Virginia Wainwright a fine and sympathetic performance by the adorable Melissa Sue Anderson of "Little House on the Prairie" fame aspires to be part of a snobby elite social clique at the fancy prep school Crawford Academy. A vicious killer starts bumping off members of said clique in assorted gruesome ways. Is it Virginia or someone else who's responsible for the brutal murders? Veteran pro director J. Lee Thompson, working from a tricky, absorbing, and ingenious script by John Saxton, Peter Jobin, and Timothy Bond, relates the gripping story at a steady <more> |
A party to remember (by acidburn-10) |
The Plot Virginia Wainwright Melissa sue Anderson belongs to an elite clique known as "the top ten" at prestigious Crawford academy. With membership to this club you get a the opportunity to be assassinated by a faceless gloved psychopath. Watching your friends being picked off one by one in increasingly bizarre ways is traumatic enough, but poor Ginnie is is still processing the tragic drawbridge death of her trampy mother while being bombarded by memories of her horrific experimental brain surgery.I just love these holiday themed Slashers "Happy Birthday To Me" is a <more> |
