Plot: A teenager is stuck in a time loop that is not quite the same each time. She must uncover the truth but her actions have consequences for herself and others. Runtime: 97 mins Release Date: 17 Oct 2013
OK, probably only a 7/10 but I thought I'd boost it with a 10/10.It has something very important that is missing from most modern films: a story. They bothered to sit down and write a story, before they started filming.Leads you along nicely, and the reveals are unrolled one by one in a timely fashion. The performances are all good, which is nice to see; not a bad act among them. The villain is excellently creepy, and the way the turmoil of the film builds up is gripping.Another pleasant little... I can't use 'surprise' because it's the word the paid-up shills for the <more>
studios use. Ah stuff it - pleasant little surprise.Think it deserves a higher rating than 6.whatever, don't you?
I think "Haunter" is a very good, ghostly movie without a lot of blood and gore. This movie uses atmosphere and suspense instead of buckets of blood. Abigail Breslin plays the depressed, moody teen Lisa Johnson who doesn't understand why her life is not going the way she wants it to. Her parents and little brother are loving, but they don't understand her and Abigail gives a true-to-form performance. Stephen McHattie is also excellent as the creepy repairman who stalks Lisa and she tries her best to keep up appearances even though in her heart, mind, and soul, it is very <more>
wrong. Lisa is not a bad girl by any means. Her family is very loving, but they don't understand why Lisa is depressed. "Haunter" reminds me of the creepy movies filmmakers used to make that use atmosphere, suspense, and mood to tell the audience the story they are trying to film.
I honestly was skeptical when I first heard about this movie. As a lover of indie films,i assumed it would be very low budget and have a odd plot to it. I'm glad i decided to actually watch it.Haunter takes your typical ghost story and does a complete refreshing twist to it.I did get lost a few times, but quickly caught back up on what was going on.The acting was incredibly good for a indie film, and the story was super engaging.I was always on the edge of my chair the whole movie.I highly recommend everyone to at least rent this movie and give it a chance if you're a fan of the thriller <more>
genre.I really most certainly be checking out the directors other movies as well seeing how I loved splice as well. This guy is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors
17 January 2017. The amazing substance of this horror movie is that it relies mostly on the story and not the expensive special effects, the gore, nor the spectacle. In perhaps the finest tradition of storytelling, it is the brain twisting plot and the eerie performances that capture the fearful imagination and plays with our mental haunting. Inverting the horror theme in a The Lovely Bones 2009 manner that included a performance by a wonderful Saoirse Ronan, Abigail Breslin of Little Miss Sunshine, brings her sparkling and anti-haunting presence to this feature movie.Unlike The Cell 2000 <more>
, Dark Water 2005 , Silent Hill 2006 , 1408 2007 , Haunter unfolds more in the tradition of The Sixth Sense 1999 , Passengers 2008 , The Thing 2008 , Shutter Island 2010 but even in a more convoluted, claustrophobic, trapped, and frightful manner. Except a decent but not brilliant ending of Haunter, Awakenings 2011 might be considered the deliciously spookier of the two.
I first saw this movie on Netflix about two years ago, and I loved it. I loved it so much that I bought the DVD about two minutes after it ended. I liked it so much that I was actually kind of scared to watch it again; I was afraid it wouldn't be as good as I originally thought it was. But three or four nights ago, two years after I bought the DVD, I watched it. And... They changed the ending. In the version I first watched, Lisa gets on her bike at the end, and she rides off into the sunlight. I loved that scene. They cut it from the DVD. I don't know why. Is there a place where I <more>
can buy the DVD with the Netflix ending? I really want to see that ending. She earned it, after all that.
Better than I expected it to be (by cynthia-boras)
I wanted to watch a ghostly flick and was not disappointed with "Haunter". A teenage girl tries to reach out to the living to prevent them from bad things to come. I was positively surprised by the acting of the protagonist. Very convincing for her age. The story is interesting and has scary moments. But it doesn't only feed on scares. You get tension and surprise moments. Its not gory though. The setting is limited but that didn't bother too much because it makes sense and doesn't get boring. It got me till the end. One of the best movies of that genre I have watched so <more>
Another Solid Performance From Abigail Breslin (by Slasher_Lover23)
When young teenager Lisa Abigail Breslin comes to realize that she and her family has been living their days the same way, she can only assume that something is wrong. Along with all of this, Lisa begins hearing voices and seeing young girls in her house. When she comes to the realization that she and her family are dead, and a new family is living in her home, her only contact is the young teenage daughter Olivia Eleanor Zichy . Lisa realizes it is up to her to try break through to the other side and save this family from meeting the same fate as hers, but dark spirits are preventing Lisa <more>
from doing this.Following her earlier thriller The Call this year, Abigail Breslin is back in this solid supernatural horror/thriller. Breslin gave an amazing performance in The Call, which lead me to believe she has what it takes to make it in the horror/thriller genre. Her performance in Haunter only seals this belief. Breslin plays a young girl in a race against time to not only save this new family but also her own, all while being tortured by the dark spirits watching her. Throughout the film, she shows the feelings of confusion, fear, and isolation so perfectly that we are immediately feeling for her character. And by the end when Lisa knows it's up to her to do something about the events at hand, we are rooting for her all of the way. In both The Call and Haunter Breslin really shows she has what it takes to become a potential Scream Queen in the genre. As for the film itself, it clearly mirrors certain well-known ghost flicks like The Others, The Shining, and The Amityville Horror. Despite this, the script written Brian and Matthew King, as well as the direction of Vincenzo Natali delivers and engaging and heart-pounding film that hooks you all the way through. The film is also backed by a great setting and atmosphere. We are given a dark and gloomy setting that gives an idea of the kind of life or lack thereof that Lisa and her family have grown accustomed to. We are also given great cinematography that can really put us into the point of view of Lisa that assists in putting the viewer in her place. Haunter is no The Conjuring. This film wasn't meant to bring out fear in the viewer, it was meant to engage the viewer into our main character, the setting, and the story. And it does all of this excellently. My rating: 8/10
This is a movie that has to be watched in the right kind of mood I guess. It's really well made and it has a really good haunting story to tell. But if you're either not into that or want it to be scarier or even more like other recent horror movies, you might find yourself really disappointed by it.I had no idea what the actual story would be, so I was guessing at times, where this was going especially at the beginning . Maybe if you know too much, it will take away some of the fun you can have while watching this. It does have some intriguing twists and it is genuinely scary, <more>
because the cinematography but also the sound design are fantastic. The whole concept works and it has a great Stephen McHattie in it, who can elevate any movie. The twists are great and the movie flows by in a nice pace! Can be watched more than once for those exact points.
I am very fond of ghost stories and other kinds of Gothic stories, and I must confess that I did like enormously this excellent B Movie. It is not perfect. Natali's direction is sometimes rather dull and too "classical", but he does the job and can be proud of his film. First because the scenario is really well thought out and injects something new in a well trodden genre. Second, because Abigail Breslin has been perfectly cast. This teenage girl carries the whole movie on her shoulders and she is great all along. I was impressed by the talent of this very young actress, which <more>
never overdoes her scenes and is able to express very complex emotions and feelings like a regular sixteen girl would. She truly deserves to become a star. But, to come back to the movie itself, if you like ghosts and plots that do not treat you like you were some brainless teen, you must see Haunter. One of the best classic horror film of these last few years, quite evocative of The Others but with something "more".
