Plot: In Las Vegas, Huck Cheever is a poker player, brilliant but also prone to let emotion take over. By the time the tournament starts, Huck owes everyone. Complicating things is the arrival of Huck's father, whom Huck detests for having left his mother, a champion player in town to win. Can Huck learn to play poker the way he lives and to live the way he plays poker? Or is his only flush the sound of his life going down the toilet? Runtime: 124 mins Release Date: 03 May 2007
Good story, good editing, good acting, and Bana is superb! (by aharmas)
In the middle of all the hype other films get, here is a finely crafted "small film" that treats us with another great performance by Eric Bana, as the self-destructive poker player who might get another chance at redeeming himself. As one discovers when the film reaches its shocking conclusion, Bana has slowly descended into a pattern that is not very healthy or practical.Bana plays a Huck, an obsessive compulsive player, always out to beat the others. He has little self control and sabotages whatever lucky deals he might have or the skills taught to him by the father who deserted <more>
him. Along the way he meets a sweet ingénue played by Drew Barrymore, and this trio's interactions is the gist and delight of the film. The film doesn't have any new revelations, but it feels fresh because it allows the humanity of the players to come through. These are not faceless gamblers, but real people who happen to live in places like Vegas. It is also good to see that some of the darkness and the underworld references have been toned down in order to allow the more intimate moments to take precedence.Bana deserves an entire separate review, and it is only fair that he becomes a major star in the future. Enough said.
Went to see this movie last week with a group of friends, as the film we intended to see was sold out. Though this wasn't the movie we planned to see, I'm really glad that things turned out the way we did.Poker isn't our thing and true the movie is a little slow when it centres on those scenes, but most of the film was very credible and humorous. We all felt that the casting and acting brilliant - some great cameo appearances by some famous faces and both Bana and Barrymore sizzle on screen. I will be definitely buying the DVD and watching again and keeping on my TV shelf. Highly <more>
Poker, Vegas, Love - What else could you possibly want? (by jiggys-49002)
I love this movie because I love Texas Hold'em poker, Vegas is the greatest city in the world, and it really has a sweet love story. The script writers were trying hard with this one but I would have liked to have seen less of dad and more of Huck being enlightened along the way.It reminds me of a koan: If your playing poker with the Buddha, why would he let you win? Answer: Because he loves you.
A movie recommended for the non-gamblers!!! (by CRISTOBALDEMIAN)
Although i am a non-gambler i enjoyed this movie...it showed me how dangerous gambling can be...one day u have a lot of money, the next one u have to pawn all your valuables in order to rise the minimum amount to keep on playing...although it was filled with terms related to poker, i did managed to understand some elements like "poker face" or "bluff"...The movie is structured into two parts: 1.first part explores the "adventures" of Huck Cheever performed by Eric Bana to get a sit on the poker tournament...He finds a girls whom with he falls in love, but his <more>
love for the poker damages the relationship. 2.The tournament part, where is shown the actual tournament, poker game... If one views this movie from the point of view of a poker film, then it is a great adventure, though also a painful one, the pain being given by the turns of event which very frequent happen to the main character. But if one views this movie from the point of view of a drama, filled with love and risk, then the film is more exciting and unpredictable, thus making it more attractive.

this movie is terrific. seriously. it might seem a little cliché at some points, but its really a good movie. its entertaining, and makes you laugh. better than that, it makes you smile at the end. the best kind of movies. i loved the ending, it definitely fit the movie. im often not satisfied with the endings in movies but i was with this one. i would recommend this movie to anyone. you don't need to know poker in order to understand this movie. the movie isn't really even about poker if you really look at it. plus, eric bana is not hard to look at for 2 hours.if you're looking <more>

Entertaining, And Poker Fans Will Really Love It (by ccthemovieman-1)
As far as playing or watching poker on television, I can take it or leave it, and I enjoyed this movie.... so I can imagine poker fans will really LOVE this film. It gives justice to their "sport" with realistic hands, playing, situations and attitudes. Often, I thought something hokey was going to happen, something predictable but rarely did that occur in this film. You really never knew what was going to happen and suspense builds for a number of gambling scenes. I hesitate to say more for fear of spoiling anything. Suffice to say, the gambling scenes in here were very realistic. <more>
I know what from the behind-the- scenes bonus features in which a number of real-life professional players commented on that fact. The film follows a father-and-son team Eric Bana and Robert Duvall playing "Huck" and "L.C. Cheever" with a small romance sub-plot involving Drew Barrymore. It isn't just all about poker, although that's most of it - culminating in the World Series of Poker - but about the mentality of people who make gambling their life. This film was far better than I figured it would be, and was rewarding in the end without being predictable. It was fairly low-key, too, in the profanity and sex department, but kids would be bored with this film, anyway. This movie will mainly attract card players, I'm afraid, and that's too bad because it offers a lot more than that. The movie got better as it went along and wound up a good two hours of entertainment.
"Lucky You" is a poker movie in many senses but it would be inaccurate to pigeonhole the movie strictly as a gambling story. The more dominant theme in the film regards the relationships between the players. Eric Bana plays Huck Cheever, the central protagonist of the film. He is an inherently good however flawed individual with a talent for poker. While the previews for the film would lead one to believe that the story focuses on the romantic relationship between Drew Berrymore's character and Huck Cheever, the movie actually more thoroughly develops the Cheever's <more>
relationship with his father, played by Robert Duvall. This relationship too is flawed but the movie's conclusion brings a gentle and gratifying closure to the conflict.Overall, Lucky You is a competent film with some rather good acting, particularly from Bana. Berrymore and Duvall also turn in great performances in their respective roles. This movie would serve well as a date film.
I went into this movie not expecting much. I like Eric Bana, being Australian and seeing how far he has come from his early comedy days and the movie "The castle" A must watch Australian film that was shot in one weekend apparently . Back to "Lucky You", I liked the presence between drew Drew Barrymore & Eric Bana. Playing cards bores me to tears, but this film made it seem almost enjoyable. It is filmed as more of a shoot-out than a battle & the camera angles angles are more from an observers point than the audience being part of the game. I liked how they made <more>
Las Vegas seem drab compared to the Oceans movies. You will only like this movie if you believe in the "lucky loser".
