POKER NIGHT is that rare film you'll still think about days later... (by Movieboy62)
WOW! What a cinematic treasure from writer / director GREG FRANCIS! This film is a topnotch blend of horror, suspense, and some endearingly quirky comedic elements, and remains that rare, prime example of what can be created by telling a strong story during a scant 12-day shooting schedule. Mr. Francis has assembled an amazing cast of actors to play seasoned detectives. The acting and writing rings so true that you actually BELIEVE these thespians ARE actual detectives!!! I watched the film last night via Amazon.com, will definitely watch it a second time, AND hope to see it on the big screen <more>
in limited run on December 20. Don't miss it. Yeah, it's that good!!
Man, this movie was a treat to watch. Superb script, acting is very believable and most of all its a fast paced well written thriller that is not to be missed. Cinematography and editing was top of the line. I was quite surprised to not find a lot of reviews out here. I had to create a new account to post my review here. Direction is excellent and I personally loved the unique way in which the story was told. There are also some elements of humor through out, which I think was done very well. It's on of the best movies I have seen from 2014.All in all a great movie that will leave you <more>
highly entertained and pleased. Go watch it and you'll be pleasantly surprised.I am giving this movie a 9.5/10.Cheers.
totally entertaining &smart lives you a feeling of pleasure (by ggqqre)
Its a film worth seeing if you like crime movies with a taste of psycho killer inside. It gives you a new point of view on the police , it has a big taste of humour so you can catch up and just breathe for a moment and then you get knocked out and thrilled. There s some crazy plot that keeps surprising you, some really creative ideas. I m really shocked from that low rating its at least 8+ . actors where great scenario was good and director totally gives you what you need. As a viewer if there was to be continued i d definitely go to see it. My taste of movie is that i got freaked and <more>
thrilled as much as i had fun and enjoyed it and never got bored till the last minute. Suggested, watch it and have fun.
At the beginning i thought that this movie would be poor and i wouldn't be satisfied with it, what happens is that the movie reveals itself very interesting... the characters, the places, the scenes everything was perfect and all the movie was about thinking and thinking, when you see this kind of movie you never get sick of it because all the story is interesting. This movie is not about a cop that spent all is life searching for a criminal and at the end the bad guy is killed, it's much more than than... at every second of the movie u stay stuck to it and u never want it to stop.. <more>
just amazing, one of the best i've ever seen that involves cops.
A wonderful trip down a dark alley: (by protilius-862-771061)
I walked into this film knowing nothing about it and expecting absolutely nothing. It was a wonderful and delicious surprise.Lately wifey and I have been feasting on the first two seasons of Hannibal... So slipping into "Poker Night" was an extremely snug fit for our current mindset. Its narrative felt very Fight Club, its presentation in ways reminded me of Boondock Saints, and its delivery kept me very engaged once I allowed the story to unfold. The cast was top notch, the story itself was wonderfully crafted, and presents itself with a night at the poker table while detectives share <more>
horror stories with one another... As these detectives share in their experiences over an evening of poker that takes place in the past , the main character is abducted in the present and has to figure a way out of being killed by a madman. With a blending of "tales from the force" and an immediate threat... The story does well presenting "Past and Present" while running poker night in parallel with a plot of sadistic revelation through the eyes of a madman. All of the side tales and mini stories go far to keep you interested in what comes next, dare I say, even as much as the main story currently unfolding does.People giving this title a 1 out of 10 are obviously a little too pampered with their films sign me up for your club of awesomeness please , and perhaps, bias to their own tastes for it. Primarily being... I felt this film had a strong script, it also had a great team, and the conclusion made "evil me" smile a bit as well. This will most certainly be an overlooked film of 2014, but for what few of us enjoy a good story with some excellent twists and turns, this will certainly be a great detour to embark on and enjoy.Best: N
I'm not a fan of slasher films, but intrigued with the description, which involved a rookie detective listening to stories of veteran cops at a poker game; stories that later come to help him escape a life-or-death situation, I gave this movie a shot. The protagonist is an immediately likable and sympathetic rookie detective, portrayed subtly and effectively by the young actor Beau Mirch. On a tangent: I love it when directors cast people the actual age of the characters in the roles as it's rare to see anyone under 30 playing anything other than high schoolers. Narratively, the <more>
story invokes a now commonplace introduction - starting at a climactic moment to come, without context, then backtracking to the events leading up to that initial moment presented. The film also makes use of voice-over from the get-go, combining a gritty detective film noir element into the overall feel of the film. The stakes and the plot lines in this movie are so deeply woven, intertwined, and conflicting that you find yourself wanting so many things for the characters, while constantly trying to learn who these people are and how they got here to begin with. From a writing perspective, POKER NIGHT writer/director Greg Francis has pulled off quite a feat in that he seamlessly weaves in and out of miniature stories told by the police officers he's in a rite of passage sort of poker game with, then weaves that in with the core storyline - which involves the protagonist's detainment and quest to escape a life-threatening scenario, to save another central character's life, and to understand who the masked antagonist, why he is so intent on wreaking heartless havoc, and why he's targeted a detective of all people in the first place. The movie does incredibly well to constantly bombard you with questions, leading astute viewers to not only to consider all the questions the protagonist clearly has, given the situation he is in, but questions like what big twist the writer has set you up for. It's something you know has to be coming, but the writing does well to give you just enough clues to help you form multiple plausible theories you go back and forth between, and which constantly evolve, just like a real detective on a tough case would face.Stylistically, the movie feels like a combination of FIGHT CLUB and BOONDOCK SAINTS - equal parts dark and fun, with unique, confused and courageous characters enduring a violent journey into unchartered territories. It also brings dark, gritty, nihilistic, noir elements to stage, the way a movie like SE7EN did. All in all, it's hard to reduce the movie to any it's this meets this sort of characterization, as so many memorable elements of so many memorable films seem drawn upon and juxtaposed to unique and memorable effect.POKER NIGHT is a baffling work in that it carries with it a grounded story with a clear villain and high stakes, but set in a world that feels like it should never make its way to the suburbs - which is an element I suspect many viewers will find particularly disturbing. This is the story of a detective being tried as a rookie in his first real bind - which is perhaps the ultimate bind to be in, up against a character so driven by completely self-indulgent motivations, and such a mastermind of this world he's created, that he may as well be the devil himself. The masked menace simultaneously disgusts while in some subtle form tapping into a deeply buried part of the modern man who's living in a highly structured world and whom may, on some primal level, want to break the bounds of societal expectation and live a life by a code of one's own invention; a sort of amoral Nietzschian Übermensch character - fully developed in its sense of having defined what it wants to do and doing it, regardless of the obstacles or consequences. To create a character that is that is so deplorable, yet so intriguing that you want him to stay alive long enough for you to decipher and understand him better, because you wonder, on some level, if a piece of this thing is inside you – kept at bay because of your principles, ethics, beliefs, and societal controls. Being able to incite such introspection in viewers is the mark of an extremely well crafted villain. I think it's that smidgen of that evil being that you can identify with and on some unspoken level understand, that makes you have enough respect for this heinous villain that you want to hear his story. At the same time, you find yourself praying that the protagonist, utilizing the wisdom that's been imparted to him by his mentors at the poker game, can beat his formidable opponent through wit, calm under pressure, and relentless determination. I won't speak to any "big twists" in the movie, as merely saying that term implies a certain structure and makes the movie less fun to watch, but rest assured - your expectations will likely be defied and your detective skills will be tested, throughout the confusing, frustrating, and violent, and disturbing journey that POKERNIGHT takes you on.I wish this movie had been packaged differently because what to me appeared to be a throwaway low budget horror movie was instead an interesting and exciting journey into a world you don't want to be in but can't help but grasp something coming out of.Oh, by the way, Gus from BREAKING BAD plays one of the cops! That in itself makes this thing worth watching. : I recommend this movie, though only to very mature viewers who enjoy smart thrillers and layered storytelling.
Not your average by the numbers filmmaking (by krazykat29)
Cop movies are nothing new, neither is terrorizing someone in a room. I thought the movie was gonna be a Saw meets cop movie sorta thing based on some reviews. gotta say though, this movie was way cooler than that. It reminded me of Guy Ritchie movies - tracking back an forward in time, funny surreal moments, people breaking fourth wall to explain things, characters switching places, etc. The acting was solid and cinematography and editing were top notch. The beginning felt a tad weak, but i'm really splitting hairs here. They really got everything on the screen with this movie. I think <more>
if there's any real 'problem' with it is, it doesn't follow the typical arc people expect these days. More of an oblique 70's feel, where you don't have the satisfaction of a neat resolution or the hero doing the final heroic thing. But that's a good thing. It's unexpected. All in all, it was actually one of the better movies I've seen this year. Hope it gets legs. It deserves it.
Watched this on Itunes the other day. After I watched it I looked up reviews and other info. I mean come on Ron Perlman and Giancarlo Esposito? One review said flashbacks within flashbacks exhaust the viewer. I mean I get the review but I disagree. I think you get caught up in the stories. From what I can tell this didn't have a huge budget but what it lacked in money it makes up by keeping you engaged. The acting is solid. The story telling is cool. The characters and editing move it along kinda Guy Richie/David Fincheresque meets Saw type feel. I found myself yelling at the computer. <more>
Where one reviewer felt exhausted I felt I was entertained. This is one I say watch for your self and don't listen to critic reviews. Remember it is a genre film and not looking I think to win any awards. No one in the movie seemed to be trying to make a movie to change the world. If you like hip storytelling and popcorn flicks this movie is for you. Put it in your queue!
This film deserves more publicity than it is getting.. An impressive cast and a pretty good thriller in its own right.. The different stories that each cop puts forward on poker night are in itself pretty good. Each story is different in their own way and its really depicts how a legit detective team would handle the same case. The negatives that I have are really slight.. Maybe the plot could have been a bit more taut and focused on the killer a bit more. The acting is well handled.. I enjoyed the ending and I wish the team behind this all the best in their next venture. I went in without <more>
any expectations but the rating on IMDb which I think it deserves at least a seven and I liked it. If you are into thrillers, give it a try.
