by the movie's unique sense of humour allied to some ultra-violent scenes of pure horror and fantasy, that combine to tell the tragic story of a young man, who sees his beloved girlfriend turned into a flesh-eating creature that still loves him, but will sooner or later have to eat him! Brian Yuzna really got it once more, proving that he is one of the most promising horror directors for the future. Don't miss this one!

time. Warlock, Hellraisers, Dead Alive, and Friday the 13th part...whatever and so on.As a "Living Dead" movie, it holds it's own by incorporating the franchise respectably. But ROTLD3 has merits that make it stand on its own. Most notably, the departure from standard horror formula and taking some risks. Rather than camp it up too much the film makers attempted to bring the Trioxon/Brain eating fair down to earth. Pitting star crossed lovers VS the zombies. No matter what you may think of the film, you have to admire the risk.This is really a love it or hate it film I suppose. Judging by the reviews that I've read, it holds true. Yuzna, the director, is effective with his obviously very limited budget. I was disappointed with some of the special effects, considering the money this team DID have, probably all went in that direction.The actors were unfamiliar to me yet interesting. J. Trevor Edmond, Curt, I think I remember him from Beverly Hills 90210 , is a believable and charismatic lead and Julie Mindy Clark is a sultry and seductive counterpart. Kent McCord and crew were a bit week but hey, it is a low budget horror film afterall.I felt particularly bad for Curt as the story progressed as he was unpredictably flawed. Normally young actors try to play this type of character cool but Edmond delivers a sensitive and frenzied performance, stressing the `love is blind metaphor'. I really thought this brought something extra to the movie. Clark is equally up to the task and ultimately steals the show with her transformation into a pin cushion zombie nymph. The performances are even more impressive when you equate the weaknesses in the script. Considering the shameful dialog and the lack of sophisticated character development..I was impressed what these two unknowns pulled off.Overall it was a nice change of pace from the standard, run of the mill, splatter fest. A Golf clap, for those responsible for making Return of the Living Dead 3 in B-horror-movie-land. ....who knew my teenage son had good taste!

Remembering the gas that re-animates the dead Curt decides to bring Julie back to life, before long the pair are on the run from the Army, the police, a gang of thugs & are leaving a blood stained trail of bodies & zombies behind them...Co-produced & directed by Brian Yuzna I love this film, simple as that & I should point out that I am commenting on the full uncut version that contains all the blood & gore, of which there is plenty. Most horror fans will be familiar with the original The Return of the Living Dead 1985 which is a very fine film in it's own right, Return of the Living Dead Part II 1988 was also a good film in my opinion although many don't like it. As the third entry into the Living Dead series Return of the Living Dead 3 feels somewhat out of place but is my favourite of the three films, the script by John Penney ditches any sort of humour & takes itself pretty seriously throughout unlike it's predecessor's. The film is more layered than you may expect, the best way to describe Return of the Living Dead 3 is Romeo & Juliet with zombies! The central love story between Julie & Curt is surprisingly well developed & I actually ended up feeling sorry for both of them, Curt's selfishness about wanting Julie regardless of the consequences & Julie's descent into a brain-eating self mutilating zombie who hates what she is becoming but can't do anything about it. It worked for me, all of it & I definitely felt a sort of sympathy for them & their situation when all they ever wanted is to be together. Another unexpected element of Return of the Living Dead 3 is it's ending, it's brilliant, works perfectly & almost had me in tears, hey I said almost. There's no happy outcome here. Luckily for us zombie fans the script doesn't forget about the blood & gore as the films full of the stuff! Rotting zombies, people with their heads blown off, a tyre iron in a cop's eye, brain-eating, finger biting, flesh munching, skin ripping, decapitation, self mutilation, head drilling, limb severing, shotgun blasting, body piercing & buckets of blood being spilt everywhere, some of the special effects look a little fake while some of the others are superb. With a budget of about $2,000,000 Return of the Living Dead 3 is somewhat basic, the cinematography is a little bland, the production design is good & it's generally well made except for some wobbly walls on the Army research base set! Director Yuzna has proved to be a very competent horror filmmaker with the likes of the unique Society 1989 , Bride of Re-Animator 1990 , The Dentist 1996 & more recently Beyond Re-Animator 2003 & Return of the Living Dead 3 is no exception as he keeps the film going at a nice pace, there are some fantastic gore scenes & he manages to weave an engaging love story amongst the gore & zombies, well in my opinion anyway. The only negative is the middle of the film which is a bit dull & uninteresting being set in the sewers & features Julie & Curt on the run from a gang of thugs, still plenty of gore during this part though so it's not all bad news. The acting from the two leads Clarke & Edmond is excellent, Sarah Douglas seems to be enjoying herself as the villain, everyone else is OK. I love Return of the Living Dead 3, I think it's a great horror film that works on many levels. Highly recommended especially if you like zombies & gore! There are also two more sequels that followed this, Return of the Living Dead 4: Necropolis 2005 & Return of the Living Dead 5: Rave to the Grave 2005 which were apparently made back-to-back in Romania of all places.

John Reynolds Kent McCord works in a high-security base where he heads a team of scientists conducting top-secret experiments, using Trioxin gas to re-animate the dead for military use. His teenage son Curt J. Trevor Edmond is convinced by his tasty goth girlfriend Julie Mindy Clarke to steal his father's security pass, and the two sneak into the base where they witness a dead body being brought back to life.Later that evening, Curt has an argument with his old man, and decides to leave home. Together with his girlfriend, he takes off on his motorcycle, but doesn't get far before he crashes the bike and Julie is thrown to her death. Not to worry, though. 'cos Curt still has his father's pass...Written by John Penney, the inventive script keeps events interesting from start to finish, freewheeling from one OTT moment to the next, whilst Yuzna's energetic direction ensures that the film is just as brilliant visually. The film may suffer occasionally from some cheesy acting and cheap sets the military base is rather fragile, wobbling occasionally when touched , but with surprisingly good cinematography and loads of top-notch gore on display, ROTLD 3 looks great.The unbelievably bloody effects are particularly impressive and often rather nauseating. Fingers are ripped off, brains munched, spines ripped out, faces eaten, and, when Julie is reanimated and eventually feels the need to eat people, she indulges in a spot of yucky body modification to take her mind off her hunger, cutting and piercing herself with nails, glass, metal springs, and any other sharp objects she can lay her hands on. Of course, as hard as she tries not too, she does chow down on a few unfortunate victims, who inevitably turn into zombies as well.The army eventually turns up, led by Col. Reynolds, who is hoping to save his son before he becomes zombie nosh. Once under control, the undead are shipped back to the base, where nasty Lt. Col. Sinclair Sarah Douglas is eager to begin her experiments: putting exoskeletons on the living dead to create super-strong bio-mechanical weapons!With buckets of blood 'n' guts, Mindy Clarke's boobs, loads of manky walking corpses, and a nifty downbeat ending, Part 3 is excellent entertainment which no self-respecting zombie fan can afford to miss.

better. There was a real story! The director actually tried for some character development! There was suddenly plenty of extremely well done gore! There were some moments of real horror!The scenes where Julie starts cutting and impaling herself were difficult to watch, that's how well done they were. The movie moves from a cheap horror-comedy into a well put together love story with incredibly gory effects. I actually really felt for the main couple, even though she was slowly turning into a zombie! Normally, one of them would get whacked which would give the remaining person a few lame Arnold-type lines, and an excuse to obliterate whatever or whomever is supposed to be the bad guy. However, this movie doesn't follow that formulaic path. It takes a very weird turn halfway through and never looks back. When Julie makes her transformed appearance in the sewer, it is truly an awe-inspiring site! They actually managed to make her look both incredibly repulsive and very sexy at the same time. This film reminded me a lot of the Ginger Snaps movies in the type of character development pursued within the confines of a horror movie. Very pleasant surprise.8/10

script is like a bizarre twist on "Romeo & Juliet": Curt Reynolds J. Trevor Edmond is an angsty teenager in love with rebel Julie Walker Melinda Clarke . While sneaking in the military base where Curt's father Kent McCord works, they discover that the project his father has been working involves re-animating corpses. After a tragic accident where Julie dies, Curt decides to bring back Julie using his father's experiments with the infamous chemical: 245 Trioxin.Right after Julie is revived, the action starts and never stops, with the couple running away from both the army and a gang that wants them dead. To make things worse, Julie's increasing urge to eat human flesh and Curt's own anxiety and family troubles collide and make the trip harder for the lovers.Brian Yuzna really created something special with this movie, the characters are very rich and are the backbone of the movie. The acting is top notch, something quite different from the typical b-movie. In fact, the movie is so well done in those aspects that its flaws in SFx and overall production are easily forgiven.The movie has a lot of heart and the credit for that must go to Yuzna's direction and Penney's script. The couple of lovers must really grow to face the situation and to face each other's troubles. The acting is very good for the most part, but is Clarke who gives the performance as Julie. The transformation from self confident daredevil to fearful victim of the circumstances, and then to ruthless killing machine is very believable and one cannot avoid to feel sympathy for her character. A really remarkable job.Sadly, the movie is not perfect, the low budget hurts the production a lot and the sets look a bit fake, However, it's worth to point out that the make-up effects in the zombies and the gore are quite good for the budget.By far the best movie in the series, and among the best and most creative horror movies ever done. Director Brian Yuzna has not been able yet to come up close to this achievement, but he earned his place in history with this movie. 8/10. A modern classic.

speaking, talking and interacting with people rather than being mindless-flesh-craving-ghouls which makes for quite a nice time here. This one still gets quite a bit of fun out of those traditional zombie works, as the rampaging creatures in the sewer confrontations lends this one it's best feature as she manages to take out the gang after them as her victims mutate and continue the assault which helps the action here considerably. The earlier scene in the lab showing them bring the zombie back to life is where this one starts paying with those mutations for great cheesy action and plenty of fun zombie gore. That cheesiness includes the film's iconic image of her cut-up and filled with spikes, nails and broken glass impeded in her body that looks quite impressive as well as the finale where the zombies and mutants coming into the picture makes for quite a fun time with all the main gore brought into play here for the film's positive marks. Among the flaws here is the fact of it being too over-the-top in regards to their relationship which is barely developed and then quickly delves into the extreme behavior of her turning that's on the whole quite lame as there's very little given about why she would turn into that kind of being instead of the ravenous, mindless zombies that were seen as the only turning from exposure to the gas, so on the whole this itself is very flawed as for why he would turn her into such a creature. The other flaw here is the rather lacksidaiscal attitude displayed for the military, who routinely ignore clearance checks, fail to secure highly secure areas in their facility and butt heads with each other over command issues instead of going after the loose zombies which really lowers their effectiveness. While the cheesiness might also be a factor, those are the true flaws here.Rated R: Graphic Violence, Language, Brief Nudity, and a short sex scene.
