closest a movie has ever come to King's writing style (by Paradoxombie)
I have not read this story but I definitely will now!!! This movie separates itself from other King movies by making a character out of the protagonist's mind. As he tries to comprehend the outrageous events that befall him, you understand how he feels and hear his ideas and thoughts which, in a normal book to movie, would be skipped over. The story itself is about a very detached young college student, with a fascination for death, who finds himself hitchhiking alone to see his mortally ill mother. Unfortunately, due to a recent suicide attempt death seems to take an interest in him.The <more>
plot is excellent and the movie possesses a style which is unlike any other. It uses fast cuts to past events and stories that the characters are talking about, which fits the plot. The movie doesn't rely on jump out of the shadows scare tactics, it is a true nail bitter. One particular scene where the character has no idea what is going on and is trying to figure out his course of action will have you on the edge of your seat! 9.5/10 unforgettable!
I just caught this flick on USA, and I am truly impressed with Stephen King getting back to his true horror roots. As a faithful King follower, I have seen and read everything the great man has put out. This is one of his better accomplishments and I definitely recommend it. David Arquette has always been one of my favorite actors and this movie allows his wicked evilness to shine through. As a nurse, I have a morbid fascination with death and the afterlife. This movie definitely points out what one choice can do to effect a lifetime of good vs bad. The effects are excellent, the tone is <more>
creepy, it has all the elements of a great King feature. Now if he would only do "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon", my life would be complete. Thanks!!
I give this a ten because, first off if you read the story you'll understand a lot more. The movie reflects a boy who loves death and is obsessed with it. By the end of the story/movie he is over his obsession, he realizes his fears and gets over them. The truth is you can never tell when or how you will die, but it will haunt you. Death is only as scary as you make it, you will die one day. The story explains more of Alan's fear and understanding of death. Alan loves his mother and tries his best to reach her before she passes. Death is only a journey before eternity, you make your <more>
People can be pretty snobbish, this is honestly quite good (by d_kittle)
This movie keeps you interested. The young actor Jonathan Jackson is great to watch, very expressive. Barbara Hershey is also wonderful to see. There are moments of pathos that sometime are a bit over the top. As usual. Stephen King has a tendency to be overly nostalgic, but that is to be expected. Stephen King fans will not mind, it is standard. My family and I enjoyed this movie. We felt that it was well worth the time. I think that perhaps the previous posters were being too critical. The flashbacks were sometimes a bit confusing, but if you pay attention, it makes sense. Rent it, check it <more>
I liked this Stephen King adaptation of his short story taken from 'Everything's Eventual', the author's most recent collection. Mick Garris 'The Stand', 'The Shining TV ' has not strayed too far from the path with this macabre tale of a hitchhiker who is offered rides from a handful of weird and wonderful characters one Halloween night. The year is 1969 and Alan Parker Jonathan Jackson learns that his mother Barbara Hershey is dying of cancer, so instead of going to see Lennon and McCartney, the troubled teenager is forced to hitchhike back to his <more>
hometown. He is eventually offered a ride by a young man with a sinister secret. Parker is then forced to confront all the demons from his past if he is to survive what could be the last ride of his life.Like the original story, the film has all the makings of a campfire tale. There are lonely stretches of highway flanked by tall pine trees - roads that are interspersed with graveyards and other dark places one shouldn't venture into after the sun sets. There are carnivals and rollercoasters. There are plenty of laughs as well as scenes that will chill your soul to the bone. Even Death himself makes an appearance.Terrifyingly entertaining, 'Riding the Bullet' will also make you question what really is important in life. Also stars David Arquette and Cliff Robertson.Matthew J Lee-Williams, Review.
I wouldn't call this film a horror, because for many that would bring up images of beasts and ghoulies. However, I also can't deny that this is a very dark film, but don't get me wrong, I am one of the few that loved this film. I agree with some that it could become slow in parts and to the action fans out there, this may not have been there cup of tea. However, for me these were wonderful moments full of intense emotion and elements that give this film layers and a complexity that had me gripped to the end. It was not the fleeing, running or escaping that had my heart in my <more>
throat, but the journey of one person trying to overcome his demons and having to deal with consequences from choices that we make. We have all made good or bad choices on a variety of levels and it was in this that we could relate to the main character. This film also makes you think. Perhaps not during the film but afterwards, a few days later perhaps. I am similar in age to Alan and sadly I find that in truth, many our age can find themselves thinking only of number one. It made me think of how we respond to others and the relationships that we have with each of them and ultimately the thought.... you or them! Its scary what can go through your mind at that point and I think that this may have had an impact on the ratings of the film. When you watch it, it is hard not to feel awkward at points but i loved that about the film. It is a film that embraces you to the point that you can loose hold and actually be on an emotional level. A note should be made at this point. There may be many reasons that people dislike this movie. A low budget worked to the best that it could but sometimes going astray, a plot that may seem simple to those who refuse to read between the lines and perhaps the lack of hold on reality that made people think, something that some may not want to do when they are sitting down to a film after a long day and so on and so on. However, there is one main reason why you should watch this film. Jonathan Jackson. What he brings to the character is fantastic. His acting was superb in this film and it takes real talent to appear in nearly every scene and still have the audience captive throughout. David Arquette was fab and pinned his character but Jonathan Jackson just stole the scenes from under him. He had to tackle a lot of emotions and I couldn't see anyone else in the part. This is a film that should be watched and not for its author may I add, as Stephen King can write in various ways but many only think true horror when they hear his name. If thats what they want in this film, then there may be some disappointment. I loved this film and would recommend that if you have some time put aside to take in a film make a good choice and watch it!
A Fun, Entertaining Mindjob (by Crannicus_Maximus)
Not being a big King fan, I don't think I could've asked for more. I've seen IT, I've struggled through the long run of "The Stand", but it is this film which stands out more than any of the other adaptations of Stephen King's work.A chilling narrative of a man traveling across country in the 70s, Riding the Bullet succeeds where many other movies have failed by presenting a personal conflict, that is, one which exists within the main character's mind.I don't think I could've asked for a much better acting job from any of the cast, either.8/10.
Well acted twist on the typical King formula (by Vampenguin)
I've read plenty of mixed reviews on this one, and tonight I finally got around to watching it myself. Definitely a very strange movie, but certainly not in a bad way. Maybe it's just me, but Jonathan Jackson reminded me of a younger Johnny Depp, which is by no means an insult. This is the only film I've seen him in, but if this film is any indication of his other work, I must say he's a pretty fine actor. To be honest, the whole cast did a great job in my opinion. The plot was typical King fare, though it did have it's little tweaks to the formula which I enjoyed. Some <more>
scenes seemed to drag on forever, but overall this was a fairy fast-paced film. I think it would have fit in very well in another Creepshow sequel if it was a tad shorter, seemed the kid of story that would fit. The message was good, and I really like the ending. Easily one of the best horror films of the last few years.8.5/10EDIT - It's been the better part of a year since I wrote this review, and today I just happened to re-read it. Though I obviously really enjoyed the movie when I watched it, it really has no staying power. I mentioned how "I really like the ending", but today I couldn't tell you how it ended if I wanted to. This was an enjoyable fim I guess , but it really wasn't very memorable.
I was quite impressed with this film. It obviously wasn't a big-budget or big-marketing film. On my TV, the guide rated this as one-star. But I liked the story, I'm a Stephen King nut, and I enjoy watching films that aren't very well known. Basically, I didn't expect much so I was pleasantly surprised to find a decent movie that had wonderful atmosphere, as well as a strong performance from David Arquette. The movie is a bit random, and yes, it is filled with some cheap, cliché' scares. Basically, this is an exciting horror film that also contains plenty of late 60's <more>
music and lifestyle. While it's not perfect, it offers some excellent atmosphere and deserves at least one watch. Definitely recommended for a good Halloween movie.
