If you weren't there it will not make sense, if you were you will pee yourself (by ajm-420-960853)
So polarising yet surprisingly so accurate.Being a teenager in the 1970s it brought back so many memories. What you think such things portrayed in the movie cold not possibly happen? Just to mention a few: Cracker fights...yep Riding in the back of the station wagon...yep Pissed on when stung by a bluebottle....yep Saw beached whales blown up as they were too big to be moved...yep Toogoom Beach QLD 1968 "Enthusiastic" young ladies....yep Stupid dangerous stunts involving fire and bikes/cars....yep Being stuck in the rumpus room while the adults misbehaved...yep Made to wear really <more>
stupid clothes....yep High shoes for men...yep and I am 6'2" Everyone smoking everywhere....yep Police drinking beer on the job....yep Getting hurt and having adults just tell us to toughen up...yep Drink driving everywhere all the time.....yepAll of those things I witnessed or was involved in personally. This is a brilliant film and every time I watch it I see something new.As I stated in the headline; if you were there it is very, very funny, if not then you will most likely think it is some sort of racist homophobic sexist slapstick debacle as it has no social justice warriors, helicopter parents, safe spaces or diversity so it could not possibly be real......but it was :
Best Cinema Roller Coaster in a long, long time... (by numbwitt)
Absolutely BANGIN! kinda 70's to BRING IT ON! There's truly no other way to describe this amazing film, but to paraphrase it as one of the best cinema-safari roller coaster adventures ever, wouldn't be enough to justify it as a great cinematic ride that disregards age; political correctness - urine counteracts! - and/or nostalgia, because it's so much more than that.Masterfully balanced with coherently and cohesive snapshots of a plethora of well-developed and superbly acted characters intermingling and intertwining on what seems to be a multi faceted camera being everywhere <more>
in that cul-de-sac at the same time, it's just sheer brilliance. A shout out to the editors on that front, they deserve it big time.In its full swing - and boy does it swing - it delivers on every frame, in every word, set, memorabilia and costume, but personally to me it delivered the most when I noted that I was being challenged by Swinging Safari and realised I was not watching the same old, same old set up... or at least not the same old way of telling a story... I should've known better by reading the writer-director credits. It talked to me on the many creative possibilities that still can be found on this medium by breaking the stale conservative mould story-telling. A brave and risqué move from the writer-director Stephan Elliott. A loud shout out to you too.Very well played Sir, congratulations on a great achievement. Vibrant, energetic, genuinely heartfelt, delightful and NEVER DULL. Thank you so much for the fabulous ride, and restoring/challenging my funny bone.
Aussie humour at its best but it won't appeal to everybody. I laughed and laughed. Loved the soundtrack to.
Hilariously painful and accurate depiction of the pre-mandatory seatbelt era (by jrspam29)
The 70s.Fondue, Beaches, and the Sexual Revolution aftermath.Enjoy being brought back to a simpler time of 8mm film childhood fun, and watch it mercifully and lovingly roasted with uncanny accuracy.Swinging Safari is a hilarious painfully depiction of the decade before mandatory seatbelt laws, when toys had small unsafe parts, and people wanted to emulate Evil Knievel and experiment sexually. Stephen Elliott's irrepressibly absurd tour of everything 70's charges straight through 3 neighboring families interpersonal relations while seemingly intersecting all the hilarious earmarks of <more>
70's culture. With a little intelligence it's easy to follow the dark comedic narrative. And if you like biting comedy, safely ignore the few negative reviews here that simply aren't sharp enough to follow the overarching narrative tying this loving homage to the 70s together.
Off beat, nice pace, thoughly enjoyed it. The attention to detail was fantastic for the period. So many subtle period references. Sound track and editing was clever. It is different and refreshing.
Loved this movie more than I thought I would. (by rspc-78297)
Simple yet brilliant accurate depiction of parenting/childhood during the 1970s. Any naysayers clearly were not brought up in this era. Wonderful fun, yet heartbreakly desperate teenage characters ground what could have been just a fluff piece. I could place every one of those characters into someone I knew from that era. The child actors were excellent. Hope to see a great deal more featuring Atticus Robb.
Daft as a brush, uplifting and occasionally laugh out loud funny (by boydwalters)
Having just seen Deadpool 2, which is such a letdown after the first one, I cannot understand how this is getting such bad reviews ... Its bright, colourful and laugh out loud funny ... If you grew up in a seaside community in the 70s its a must ... If you like 70s Australian cinema its a must ... If you like camp, daft as a brush comedies its a must ... Its not trying to be a masterpiece ... Its just a funny, but sharp, pastiche of cliched 70s Australia ... And gord did those cliches really exist ... Give it a go ... It made me laugh out loud ... A lot :
Forget the Nay sayers (by asdmuzak)
If you were born like me in 73 you'll love this film. From the evel knievel stunt kid to the fondue, it's all that was oz in the late 70's. Hell we even had the same pool. I laughed my head off. Even the swinging bit was spot on for the time with all the parents getting pissed up and having a crack at the neighbours wife.lol The mo's are spot on and the clothes are like looking at photo's of my parents. Good to see the political correct 2000's didn't come into the making of this film, This is how it was back then, if you didn't do as your told you got a wack. <more>
I'm all the better for it and it was a better Australia than the nanny state we live in now, take a ride down memory lane and relive the golden years of Oz.
