When the movie first started, I said, not another docudrama, but then I started to really like it. The actors acted like "real people" being interviewed and followed around. Their actions and speech patterns were totally normal. Some people who want to watch sy-fi movies want action, action, action. So do I but this also made you think -- WHAT IF!!! So if you want action go see Star Wars, but if you want to use your imagination watch The Beyond.
WAY better than current rating 4.6 (by shawn4004)
This is hard sci-fi. This is a wonderfully written story with some degree of payoff, but leaves huge questions unanswered about humanity, which is what hard sci-fi is about. Do yourself a favor and give this movie a shot, but you have to be patient, and you have to pay attention.
Surprisingly good science fiction (by Snootz)
I'm fairly demanding when it comes to movie quality, especially the initial script and story-telling, with zero tolerance for jump-the-shark or "zero plot" films. This movie is just the opposite: sci fi at its very best. So when I read reviews which talk about "slow moving" and "boring script"... my answer to that is "Go watch another Transformers movie".This film takes the form of a lengthy documentary and within that concept performs extremely well. We see here some of the best script-writing, directing, cinematography and acting that has come from <more>
film makers in years. Anyone acquainted with my other reviews will realize I don't say this lightly. I award 10 star reviews to only the best of the best-- and those are very few.The concept of this film is basic: an unknown anomaly appears in space, accompanied by hundreds of dark globes that station themselves above the Earth's surface. Typical invasion scenario. The humans explore. There are steps taken, mistakes made etc etc. What is different in this film is the masterful degree of story-telling, believable plot, a cohesive story line, cinematography that is "just right" not too much, not too little , accompanied by some of the best directing and acting we have seen in a long time. Not to mention a plot twist that turns all expectations on their ear.I find it very sad that mass-media has so mentally desensitized this generation that the current average rating of this movie is 4.4 from 443 people. Clearly such indicates our society is devolving into a state of mental junk food addicts. This movie isn't cerebral fiction; it requires no translation or head scratching at all. It simply tells a story, and that story unfolds brilliantly-- with some of the best writing, directing and acting I've seen in decades of science fiction movies.Slow moving? Yes-- there are no zooming star fighters, light saber fights or exploding space ships here. No fight choreography, nude bodies, and amazingly not a single F-bomb in the entire film. No blood, no gore, no fanged monsters tearing out people's throats. So for those who are looking for such things, best look elsewhere. What we find here is well-done, intelligent, thoughtful, unique and creative sci fi that is all too rare in today's schlock-filled movie market. This is different. This is better.
Although obvious avoidable flaws, still very ambitions, well written with excellent visuals (by TheTopDawgCritic)
Hasraf Dulull is know in Hollywood for his extended resume in visual effects including some blockbusters such as Hellyboy and The Dark Knight. He has created a handful of successful short films and this is his first full-length film as writer, director, producer, editing and visual effects supervisor. Ambitious? Yes. Successful? In some areas. The visuals - as expected from his resume, are excellent, especially for a low budget, B-grade Indie film. The tech portrayed was done very well, especially the Human 2.0 robots. The cinematography was on point. The writing - particularly the <more>
story/premise, was excellent. His directing was actually quite good but he failed in the camera department. Way too many out-of-focus scenes seriously annoying , and shaky-cameras with unnecessary zoom-ins/outs. These could have easily been avoided as the director - and editor of this film. The pace was very slow and the film should have been edited to about 1:10-1:20 max instead of the 1:43 length. The low-budget actors were actually not bad and most were convincing in their roles. Although I enjoyed the docu-style approach, I also felt the film had somewhat of an identity crisis. The focus was convoluted between the aliens and robots, Sci-fi and science, conflict and philosophy. But by the rolling credits, I was actually very satisfied. For my over 300+ reviews, I always rate a film based on its merits. This was a low budget, B-grade amateur indie film, and rating it as such, this deserves an 8.5 from me, rounded up to a 9 to try to even out all those 1's from people expecting some huge Hollywood production with A-list actors and big financial backing, and comparing & rating it to those. Clearly not fair.If you enjoy a good amateur indie sci-fi, this is a must see.
Much better than contact and interstellar. (by lewislewisdam)
I don't write reviews but had to after seeing the ridiculous low rating reviews on here. I'll never trust the sheep on here again, I suspect they're the same fools that believe in Russian collusion. The story was well written and came to a great conclusion after the build up unlike contact and interstellar. This film is proof you don't need to pay millions to dopey Hollywood types.
Well worth watching (by masterquack)
Really liked the concept and style of the movie. This is not an over-acted "Hollywood style" blockbuster film, but a well thought out and interesting movie. This is hard science fiction, not science fantasy. If you are looking for lots of fast action and explosions then this is not for you. If you want a film that actually makes you think about what is possible , then sit back and enjoy.
Smart SciFi appreciated here. (by rwitmer-22426)
I'd describe this as a bit of Arrival and Contact, maybe some 2001: A Space Odyssey. If you enjoyed those movies you may enjoy this. If you didn't don't waste your time, go see the latest comic book movie.I love these hard SciFi type movies, but they are few and far between. Always rewarding to find a gemstone like this.
The reviews are way too harsh; If you liked Contact give this a try. (by drquantum)
I never leave reviews, but I felt the need to voice my opinion on this one because a sub 5 rating is absolutely unwarranted. This to me is classic sci-fi - it's sci-fi that speaks to the human condition and that focuses on the feelings evoked by the prospect of real-life, first-contact. The kind of sci-fi fix you get from movies like 'Contact'. It's not about explosions, or war it's about humans and our place in the universe. Is everything 'technically' perfect? No. There's a lot that could have been improved from some of the lack-luster characters, to the <more>
less-than-ideal focus on the interaction with and nature of the aliens. But ultimately this movie combines a fantastical idea with really great visuals to make a highly entertaining film. Ignore the pretentious reviews and give this a try.
A surpisingly good movie about alien invasion camouflaged as a documentary for internal use. This is where it fails, however, as there are too many moments which couldn't be filmed, especially in a way they were filmed here very noticeable and can be distracting . But if not for these moments, it's actually really well made for a "fake" documentary. Thoughtfully written and engaging story with little details and the great visual effects add to the immersion, actors do a great job as well. It definitely could benefit from being a classically filmed movie rather than a <more>
