Why the hate? A pretty good movie, definitely recommend it!! (by indianhonda)
Don't read any of the reviews, I don't understand why the hate. It was a pretty decent movie, had some plot holes but very much watchable and you'll definitely like it if u watch with an open mind. A father looking for her kidnapped daughter is not something new but its not a typical movie where the father just goes berserk and kills off all the bad people. The father just acts like a normal average person would. It is not as good as prisoners was but definitely doesn't deserve to be rated so low. The story moves back and forth which i find is pretty cool, but some people <more>
might not like it as it can be a little confusing at times. The acting is superb and the movie is a little slow to start off but overall, i would definitely recommend this movie!! Watch for yourself and decide!
I unfortunately first read some of the reviews before I watch The Captive. I will never do that again. After watching this film the only thing I am wondering is what the critics are drinking and what profession they should switch to. Look at the director and it will make sense on how prejudice critics actually are. This movie made me sit on the edge of my seat the entire time like no other has got the longest time. Just wow and an the writing was perfect. Good job.to everyone thanks for entertaining for 2 hours. Being a patent it hit me hard and even if your not a parent you'll love this <more>
The lowest I'd rate this movie would be an 8.5-9....solid. I gave it a 10 to offset whoever is trying to pan this excellent movie. I haven't seen a movie this well performed with so many great actors and a story that's so well written on this subject ever before. Extremely gripping and does not disappoint. Why anyone would believe the actors in this cast would work a script that would only rate a 5.5 is beyond belief so don't be fooled by the poor IMDb rating of this movie folks, something sure seems fishy with the very poor rating, now I know not to trust IMDb anymore because <more>
no way would all those viewers vote so low. The story is up to date on the technology as well as far as crime stories.
Before going to see Atom Egoyan's The Captive, I was searching some reviews for it online and came across mostly negative and scathing reviews of the film. Most critics did not seem to like it at all and if my information is correct, I think the film was also booed and heckled when it premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Now that I have actually seen the film, I have to be honest and say that I really can not see where the critics are coming from on this film. I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were a few problems and flaws I found with it, but they were minor and did not <more>
prevent me from really liking and now recommending this film. The film deals with a very disturbing and sensitive subject matter, but it was done, in what I thought was a really thoughtful way, in the fact that we never see any violence, or anything of that nature and everything is more, or less just left up to the viewer to decipher and put together what has happened, or what will happen. This is not a stylized foray into sex and violence, but instead a fascinating and thrilling journey dealing with that subject matter, done in the style of thrillers from years past where there is little to no violence seen and it is all the more effective because of that and doesn't just cash in and try to gross out the audience, or to shock us in any way. I really appreciated this sensitive and careful approach to the storytelling and subject of the film. The film has a slower pace to it, which may be off putting for some viewers, but I found it engrossing from start to finish with it's low key style and look and letting the viewer observe and sink in all the details around us and also by not over simplifying things and making them too obvious. The film avoided most of the usual clichés and Hollywood habits of films of this kind of nature and again kept it low key, but at the same time fascinating and always entertaining and captivating. The performances were all good here and everyone held their own and really carried the film and it's subject matter well. The cinematography was haunting yet beautiful and added to the stark and bitter backdrop of a Canadian winter and made the suspense feel more homegrown and realistic. The only real problems I had with the film were very minor. Minor, but I will still point them out. Really my only problem was that I did find a few plot holes in the film, where I was watching something at one moment and then something at another moment that did not quite all add up and sometimes left me a little muddled and confused. At times the script could have avoided these issues and maybe if it had been edited also a little differently these faux pas would not have been as evident, but in the end these are just minor quibbles and I really do not have too much bad to say about this film. It kept your interest and was thrilling throughout and I found that nothing ever seemed too far fetched, or unbelievable here which added to the authentic and genuine feel of the characters and the events that are going on. If this had been glorified, or made into a big budget Hollywood film, I feel it would have totally wrecked the low key and subtlety of this film that made it work so well. I know that most critics and online users will most likely disagree with me on my review of this film based on what I have read online, but I liked this film from start to finish and if someone asked my opinion, I would certainly recommend this film and as it stands, I find it to be one of the year's strongest films and maybe one that some these critics should give a second chance. Highly recommended.
you know, one professional to another; i wish i had met someone like you when i was a little girl. (by aizazbokhari92)
i saw the low rating and the cast, and felt something fishy. i wondered why actors of such caliber would act in a movie that could't even come close to a good movie rating of 7 or above. I read a few reviews and observed all sorts of critics. i decided to watch the movie and hence, so, i did. The movie in terms of action is pretty flat. there is no melodrama but the direction has incited such pure emotion in the characters, a few amazing scenes, and the overall tone of the movie that it's hard to get your eyes off the screen for two hours straight. it is not a thriller in its real <more>
essence. it's a thrill of sentiments emanating from relationships. some scenes would even make you cry, i bet. i'm the kind who does not like to cry and it made me come close to shedding tears so that's rare . The movie has touched a cultivating subject in the society very neatly and vividly. It tends to peek into some harsh realities of the in-capacities of our justice and law system. Watch the movie and if you're a movie freak like me, you'd love it as much as I did.I voted it 9 not out of pity but only because it deserved it.
Intelligent and vital puzzle film. Be patient and the intriguing pieces fall into place. Kurt Vonegut style time-line with the future and the past within the narrative dispersed throughout. This is an important subject, pedophilia, and the sinister potential of the presence of these kinds of people within our societies is displayed well here. I must say something about the naysayers who have previewed the film. They either lack imagination or lack patience. I found no plot holes. The direct story information presented within the film in minimal and strong, and any questions the audience may <more>
have can be easily answered using a bit of common sense and imagination. Well done film crew, this is powerful stuff.
This is the last time I take into consideration negative reviews + a low rating. I was very undecided about going to see this movie due to this bad habit of reading reviews on IMDb. It is not the first time a low rated movie turns out to be great, but it is certainly the greatest contrast between reviews and the actual movie. This just proves that most users are probably persons who don't understand a well constructed narrative and don't have an eye for beautiful cinematography. Ryan Reynolds does a great job and so do his co-stars. I also admire Mr. Atom Egoyan for writing, directing <more>
and producing this movie. It is a good movie. Go watch it and don't let the rating create low expectations. Hopefully it will exceed the current 5.8.
Implausible..... but I somehow got hooked (by pauljohninbolton)
Let me start by stating this isn't the greatest movie ever made - You've only got to look at some of the other reviews to see that. However...I actually really enjoyed it maybe because I'm the father of a 10 year old girl, and so could perhaps relate easier, IDK?? . Anyway, it really got me hooked from the beginning. Sorry all you haters but it deserves better than a 5/10 score. Many people moan about the confusing timeline. I honestly can't say I struggled with the story going back and forth. The actors appearances altered accordingly with age, hairstyles, etc... the story <more>
actually seemed fairly straight forward to follow without any difficulty. I can easily get muddled up in an awkward film if I lose interest - maybe that's what happened to all the negative critics on here??? Overall, an enjoyable movie despite the disturbing story that I'll undoubtedly recommend to family and friends.
I can say that this was actually a great movie! I watched this movie clueless about the director's negative past as a filmmaker and other things that made me think twice when I found out afterwords. But unlike some of the other users, I went in just wanting to watch a good movie. The flashbacks, the emotion, the suspicion and the mystery that was in it really did it for me. The story was so out of this world, but so realistic. Also, being an editor myself, The Captive made me not pay attention to the editing and thats a pet peeve I have. So that says enough. But the ending, killed me. I <more>
literally said: this can NOT be the ending. I was checking the time, I was stressing! So yeah, that's a bummer and I do not think there will be a part two.Should get a lot more credit.
