fantastic and under appreciated (by howardoleme-254-189291)
i admit i am somewhat easily influenced where Gere is involved-hot-his ability in brooklyn's finest and primal fear was amazing- this film hearkens back to the skill in no mercy and the brutality of internal affairs-the storyline does not center on his looks-they are just there naturally-he is cunning, cold, and without conscience..he has retired from a life of espionage and murder only to be drawn back into it to survive- the real surprise in this film was eric forman, that 70's show, actor topher grace-wow-off the charts- someone else in the movie industry give him more work-and who <more>
needs explanation on martin sheen? 'nough said there-the matching up of the three was a dynamite formula in this drama mystery- i loved ryan gosling in ides of march, which i found somewhat lacking but i think that, given the right roles, topher grace will surpass ryan- not only would i see the double again, i will purchase a copy asap-
This movie has all the components that make a action packed thriller..well not too much action but still a brilliant thriller.. it is pretty hard to figure out the twist and turns this movie takes.. and leaves you wide mouthed many times...do not at all go with the ratings of it in IMDb... I do not know why people underrated it... Just watch the movie to believe its exciting ride..and the plot it reveals is a totally controversial topic in itself...you will never regret watching this movie...and it does not at all fall in "watch and forget movies" type banner.....watch it to believe <more>
No Mind-Numbing Tripe Here (by PartialMovieViewer)
Rarely have I experienced such a lighthearted romp. Through the dimly lit streets of DC, an FBI Agent drags his loser-CIA-has-been, companion through some really hilarious moments of turmoil and espionage. What a blast. Adding to the joviality, the pavement always has that recently-rained-on-sheen allowing shoes to make really cool splishy-splashy sounds while our farcical pair jog here turn around and run there. Talk about fun-filled suspense. With oh so many twists-and-turns, this movie's intenseness, intrigue and blistering pace make it a hard cookie to describe and difficult to take <more>
serious. I think the Romans would have labeled this simply an 'odiosis fabula.' Let's face it - this is one cloak-and-dagger slog superbly molded for the gormless. The inane plot's execution is so ingenuous the most fatuous will easily comprehend it. Additionally, the shots of D.C. are so spectacularly repeated, they almost redefine ad nauseam. This is a movie for the ages. I am so impressed I am running out right now and buying the DVD. I want to brag about ownership to all my friends. The heck with that – I am going to shout this out to the world. Phew – I am winded just thinking about this flick. Anyways if you have not seen this yet, you are not alone. Let's see if we can see this one together or not.
Reading a few of the reviews along with the IMDb rating almost turned me off from this but after watching this I can say boy were they wrong!I figured I was following this movie pretty good till the end. I was enjoying the action and the story along with what would the twist be! I was in awe after they happened with how cleverly the twist were done. I didn't expect what happened to happen at all. I pretty much had my own summary of what usually goes down in movies like this. When it comes to the part of me actually talking about the movie story itself or what would be considered mild <more>
spoilers it wont happen.. Watch it for yourself and see I guarantee you will not be disappointed! The only thing I thought was wrong for the listing of this while I was watching it was mystery. At least till the end that could have went in so many directions potentially turning this 9/10 into the 6/10 rating that it has. This movie is so underrated :
You would think you have figured out the whole story when the movie starts, but it will surprise you at every turn. Richard Gere and Topher Grace both give good performances. Honestly, I didn't think Grace could pull this role but he did a good job. The movie is a little fast paced but it doesn't take away anything. Although I do believe that they could have built Gere's character a little more. Or at least worked on the chemistry between Gere's and Grace's characters. But there is so much you can pack in 90 minutes. I am a little surprised as to why it got so low rating. <more>
My recommendation is that you watch the movie and don't pay any attention to what others are saying. This is definitely one of the best of 2011.
Lots of turns and twists in this fast paced tale of spies and espionage. (by fredericksmith1952)
Richard Gere and Topher Grace work well together in this excellently crafted spy thriller. The entire cast works as an ensemble to present a tale worthy of your interest. Without revealing too much, it is safe to tell you this story deals with what happened to the agents in the field at the fall of the Soviet Union and whatever became of the KGB. Odette Annable is remarkable as Topher's wife, and gives us the impression of the clean cut, all American wife supporting her FBI husband. Martin Sheen is, as always, remarkable in his portrayal of the FBI Director. Overall, the cinematography <more>
and photography are crisp and clear, the plot is excellent, and the film is an exceptional effort to keep your attention. Rated PG-13 for violence, some disturbing images, and language, I can safely recommend this one to the parents for a good family film, as long as the little ones are in bed. Be prepared for the last 10 minutes of the film, you won't see it coming. Collectible, too soon to tell, but it ranks right up there with Bond and Bourne.
Good Film with twists in it, well worth the watch (by njneiljones100)
When I first read the review on here i almost didn't bother watching the film also. but i was bored an thought what the hellWas a really good film and kept me interested the whole way through right to the end with the twists in it.I ain't gonna spoil it for anyone but all i will say is its a decent film and well worth the time i spent watching it, had a little of everything. I'd say it was more a thriller with action in it ? but also makes you think and for once I didn't predict the outcome at the end fully, makes a change. Loved it and deserved better previous reviews. I went to see The Double with neutral expectations, but it ended up being a pleasant surprise, because of a solid screenplay in the purest tradition of B cinema, two competent performances and good direction. The veteran who returns for one last job; the rookie who has to get trained in the "battlefield"; the expert murderer with a pending case...it's obvious that The Double was prepared with the same ingredients of an uncountable number of thrillers; but the astute screenplay incorporates some unexpected twists which kept me in suspense till the end. There's one big twist <more>
during the first half hour of The Double, and for a moment, I was worried about the fact that co-screenwriters Michael Brandt who was also the director and Derek Haas had ruined the film; but it fortunately happened the opposite, because the early revelation of a certain detail changes the dynamic between the main characters, and puts their motivations in doubt until the end itself, when we have new surprises which perfectly tie the loose ends, and we realize that everything was precisely planned from the beginning.Richard Gere and Topher Grace bring credible and enthusiastic performances in the leading roles. On the opposite, Martin Sheen seems to have participated only in order to charge a paycheck. Another negative element is that some details in the "Cassius" investigation feel a bit forced. Nevertheless, I can recommend The Double as an exciting and very entertaining film with various positive elements.
In the intro, a group of illegals crosses the border. Soon the border patrol arrives, most flee, but some start shooting and killing, and end up getting into the BP car. In the back are the real border patrol agents.Next we see a political debate on TV. One guy argues we should get tougher on Russia. Wow, not much has changed in 5 years. The other guy, a senator argues against the war-mongering neocon. But this senator also has business interests in Russia so the FBI is spying on him. When he leaves his room at night his throat is cut by a stranger, all this while the FBI is watching on <more>
monitors. When they get to the scene, the CIA is there for some reason and takes control. Even the CIA director shows up.Some guy arrives home to find the CIA director there who tells him about the crime. Turns out the guy, Paul, was a former CIA agent in charge of finding "Cassius" who was a Russian agent/international killer who was never caught. The CIA wants Paul's help now that it looks like Cassius has returned. All of Cassius victims had their throats slashed with wire. Paul reluctantly agrees to meet the joint CIA-FBI !? taskforce. There he meets his young FBI counterpart--another expert on Cassius who wrote his MA thesis on Cassius. Paul thinks it's a copycat, the kid thinks it the real deal. Of course Paul mocks the kid's youth and inexperience. And after leaving the meeting angrily of course Paul returns to help. Can there ever be an enthusiastic hero in a movie instead of always the reluctant hero? Ben, the kid, and Paul visit some Russian convict who was part of the Cassius gang. They offer him a radio as a gift if he collaborates. He does, but ends up swallowing the batteries, which sends him to the hospital. There he takes his chance and escapes. But someone is waiting for him...and kills him. It's Cassius himself, whose surprise identity is revealed to us surprisingly early. The CIA in the meantime makes the connection between the illegals and the senator's death. Among the illegals were several Russians, one of them is a known entity to them. Even though Paul has been retired for years, all his contacts are intact, and he starts getting info to find the Russian. Ben invites Paul over for dinner where Paul does his best to tell Ben's lovely wife to convince her husband to drop this case, that Cassius is too dangerous, that if he gets to close Cassius would not hesitate to kill them all.Ben with the aide of a friend take a second look at all his Cassius files and discovers his probable identity. It now becomes a race whether they will be able to grab Cassius before he finds them. But there's another surprise revelation once they confront the Russian. The Double has a rich and complex story and, sure, it's not a bulletproof story but one with some plot holes here and there. Nevertheless, it's an accomplished spy thriller that gets us involved and interested in the outcome. Although the revelation of Cassius' identity early on is really odd. They could have based the entire movie on that moment had they made it the climax. So after the revelation and with that curiosity satisfied, the viewer is left wondering what the movie will center on for the rest of the time. It becomes a manhunt of course which made the revelation at the end pretty neat and unexpected. In a way it wasn't necessary for the emotional arc but it was necessary to fill some of those plot holes and make it all work and it also makes the move stand out among others in the genre. The ending too was pretty original.
