Ice Pirates is the funniest sci-fi spoof, and one of the best comedies ever made. There is no way that Galaxy Quest is even close. Even Spaceballs has to take a back seat. Ice Pirates is Spaceballs on Nitrous Oxide.Of course, to appreciate it you'd have to have seen a lot of science fiction movies, as they are what Ice Pirates is poking fun at. Fans of Red Dwarf are also advised to take a look at this film, as it was obviously an inspiration for the show.
SciFi HiCamp (by squill)
This is the movie "Galaxy Quest" wanted to be.Absolutely hilarious script, executed with style and wit, double entendre loaded, spiced with loving hommage after hommage, Robert Urich at his most deliciously hunky, Anjelica Huston looking tough-dyke fab, the biggest, bestest, blackest afro-sheen robot, and Bruce Villach as a more fabulous outer space queen then Zsa-Zsa, makes this little film a lost gem.Don't worry about plot and storyline; they're there and well above standard for the genre. The real joy is watching the actors immerse themselves in the gloriously campy <more>
dialogue, and relishing the appropriate cheesy special effects.Enjoy!
Suspend disbelief, for crying out loud!!! (by ercinc-3)
Great, great, cheezy flick. I loved this movie when it first came out, and am still waiting for it on DVD... For the overly critical- and for the love of Pete...the TITLE is ICE PIRATES.. what the HECK do you expect?? It's called suspension of disbelief. And wait...before you go and say "my belief only goes SO far...", thats WHAT suspension of disbelief IS- suspension of it ALL...not just "so far"... if you can't do that, then don't even bother commenting on movies. The movie is what it is. A slapstick, Mel Brooks-esqe, cheezy space comedy. ...Is it less <more>
believable than a SECOND all metal, moon-sized space station that flies around the galaxy destroying planets, which in turn itself was destroyed with the help of a tribe of talking teddy bears??? come on...
If you liked Mars Attacks! and Buckaroo Banzai .... (by clarkpark)
This is the movie that killed Mary Crosby's career and nearly derailed Robert Urich's, Angelica Houston's and Ron Perlman's. It's one of those movies - like 1941 and Paint Your Wagon - that everyone knows is a total turkey, except for those who place what they see on the screen above what they read in the reviews. If you liked Mars Attacks! and Buckaroo Banzai, and laughed your ass off at Spaced Invaders and Killer Clowns from Outer Space, you'll love Ice Pirates. The time is the distant future, where by far the most precious commodity in the galaxy is water. The idea <more>
that there were once ten planets whose surface was principally covered by water is considered a myth by most people, as is the story that the last surviving water planet was somehow removed to the unreachable center of the galaxy at the end of the galactic trade wars. The galaxy is ruled by your basic evil emperor John Carradine presiding over a trade oligarchy that controls all mining and sale of ice from asteroids and comets.Robert Urich is Jason, leader of a band of ice pirates that includes Ron Perlman, John Matuzak and Michael D Roberts. Of course, the crew also prominently features the obligatory unbeatable master swordsman and latter-day samurai, but, in a blow for equality, the part is played to perfection by Angelica Houston. In the formulaic plot for outlaw space operas, our heroes attack an ice freighter, are captured, but escape with a princess Mary Crosby kidnapped by the evil emperor in tow. They rescue her, thread the perilous path to the center of the universe and the fabled tenth planet, and destroy the evil empire's stranglehold on the people.Along the way, you are treated to some of film's oddest aliens, god-awful puns and excellent lampoons of space opera icons. It's full of bona fide toilet humor, from the pirates breaking through the hull of the ice freighter into a lavatory whose commode is occupied by a chickenman, to the standard reconditioning for outlaws and other deviants - castration by mechanical chompers, a lobotomy and a blond dye job, then sale as a soprano domestic slave.Ice Pirates is the illegitimate child of Star Wars and Animal House. The jokes, both verbal and physical, range from the hackneyed to the truly brilliant - and most of both will have you rolling on the floor. It's a an hour-and-a-half of pure unadulterated fun. When I finally get the 6' x 8' screen for our light projector mounted, this will be one of the first movies we watch.
Seriously fun to watch though it is a little hokey. This is a fantastic movie when you're in the mood for a good giggle. The quality of the cinematography is dated but it is really quite good for the time. There are a few rough plot points and a few loose ends they leave untied but nothing serious enough to hurt the movie any. Keeps you on your toes, and though the ending is obvious it's got some real good twists on the way. Ice pirates lacks little in the emotional spectrum though it can be a little hard to get worked up while the main character is wearing a frilly shirt tied at his <more>
waist. Anjelica Huston is very fun to watch and each of her costumes made me want to steal her for my own. There are lots of familiar faces, including one for another low budget film, Caveman John Matuszak .
A well made underrated SCI-FI Romp (by zoeisdead2002)
Some people would call this a type of movie vehicle riding the star wars wave. I see it as a template that might of ended up influencing such series as Fire fly, Cowboy Bebop, and many other space themed western films after. Its funny and has its moments. Most people would be turned off by the plot. They are pirates that steal ice cause of the galaxies limited supply of water. Not really spectacular but the comedy and witty dialog make up for the movie flaws. Robert urich is always cool as ever and the rest of his cast looked like they were having a good time with their characters. They first <more>
get captured and sent to a factory that turns prisoners into unichs. They manage to escape with the help of a woman they first held hostage. Through out the story the dashing heroes are looking for her father who holds the secrets to a planet that has a limited supply of water. The bad guys wanna stop them so the Ice pirates break into action and you get that whole cat and mouse thing. its worth it though cuz I always give points to movies that have a good way of not taking themselves seriously and letting the audience in on the laugh.
This movie is generally underrated, which may be because people expected it to be something it's not. It's a comedy, a spoof, and an excellent one. It is not a serious sci-fi action adventure.Who knew Robert Urich could be this funny? The scene where the captured ice pirates are being prepared for slave duty alone is worth the price of admission! Then there's the robot that was purchased for an inexplicably good price. That particular scene is so dark that it may be necessary to play it back a couple of times to see what's going on.You find a beautiful woman in suspended <more>
animation. What would you do?The biggest shortcoming of this film is the ending, where there's a rather silly chase through a wormhole or some such. It doesn't really work, and since it's right at the end of the film may help explain why so many review the film so poorly.
I found a very used copy at a yard sale and boy does it bring back memories. It is funny, romantic, provocative, even sexy. Comedy is hard and the actors in this film make it look easy, and when your willing to put up with a worn out tape; that's when you know it's good. Someday I hope to see it on DVD.
Perhaps the funniest SF-Movie (by dieter_nagy)
Ice Pirates is a B-movie, it's campy, trashy and it is most of the time hilariously funny. To me it probably is the funniest sf movie I ever watched. Sure, Galaxy Quest is funny, but it is also totally selfconcious, the whole humour comes from making fun of Star Trek.Ice Pirates also makes fun of sf tropes, but it never takes itself seriously. While the story might be less strange than Buckaroo Banzai, the former is as quirky as the latter. On the other hand, some of the visuals still look great to me.This is one of the few films, I loved as a child, that stood up to the test of time and <more>
entertained the adult me as well as the young peg.
