Who Gets IT? (by scttwortman) |
Oskar Homolka got it. Richard Widmark got it.Even Gordon Jackson got it.Does anyone remember "the Crimson Pirate"? Folks this is not history! This is fun. One of My childhood favorites. The score that every one seems to love is the tipoff. This is going to be a swashbuckler! Only Poitier seems to think he's playing Shakespeare's Moor. This is a great adventure movie! So well done in fact;that no one, in my Saturday matinee audience, even noticed the interracial romance.Kudos to Cardiff for pulling that off! Quite a feat in 1963! This is the kind of film parents hated, because <more> |
Fond memories (by GrumpyEuryale) |
I recently watched this film again, for the first time in years. OK, so maybe it's not as historically accurate as it could be. But the acting in the main is still good, the music is superb, and I defy anyone *not* to be scared when Poitier says "You will ride the Mare of Steel", surely one of the most gruesome punishments in the history of the cinema! |
Great fun,but don't take it seriously (by Caz1964) |
Hadnt seen this film for years so when i saw a copy on ebay i thought ill have to get a copy.My husband who loves viking films surprisingly had never heard of this one.He wasn't sure what to expect. I put it on the other night to watch and he loved it,we have never laughed so much. This film is not to be taken as a history lesson it is just a fun film and nothing more, most of the time its unintentionally funny, for instance the long distance swimming Richard Widmark does at the near beginning of the film. The amount of costumes Sidney Poitier goes through, the different accents the viking <more> |
Under-rated colorful epic. (by scifiguy-2) |
Big budget spectacle produced by Irwin Allen may possibly be his best film. The casting is great, although Richard Widmark appears to be out of place. It's a rare treat to see this many fantasy genre cast-members in the same film...Russ Tamblyn George Pal films , Lionel Jeffries "First Men In the Moon" , Clifford Evans Hammer films and Edward Judd. Great art direction, sets and costumes give this film some nice atmosphere. |
Jack Cardiff's Masterpiece; One of the Great Adventures, With Humor (by silverscreen888) |
Many people, young and old, male and female, regard this as one of the greatest adventure films ever made. Director Jack Cardiff, art director extraordinaire of "The Vikings" here makes an even better film in every respect. The cinematography is beautiful, the script by Beverly Cross and Berkely Mather from a Nordic novel is absolutely outstanding. From the memorable titles by Maurice Binder to the music, costumes, sound and sets, every element of this fantastically-difficult production works splendidly. The storyline involves the hero, Rolf, played intelligently by <more> |
The OTHER great Viking movie. (by jckruize) |
After Kirk Douglas' THE VIKINGS, this was a close second in fun, Saturday matinée-style spectacle. Richard Widmark inhabits the role of the Viking, Rolfe, with a breezy, unstilted style that suits his character's sense of derring-do perfectly. In contrast, Sidney Poitier plays it straight, and his majestic voice and bearing make him a commanding yet sympathetic villain. The plot is lightweight, it's true, but there's much fun to be had for those of us fond of old-fashioned adventure in distant eras and exotic climes. Sit back, drink in the magnificent cinematography and Dusan <more> |
Widmark as a Viking and Poiter as a Moorish Prince embark on a search for a huge golden bell. (by Mickey-2) |
"The Long Ships" released in 1963 is not a true depiction of Viking history; nor, was it intended to be so. Richard Widmark and Sidney Poiter create two adversaries who end up searching for a long-lost golden bell, referred to as the "Mother of Voices." At first, Richard Widmark, as the Viking adventurer, has to convince his father, a Viking thane leader of a Viking village that, one the bell exists, two he knows where it is, and three, he needs a ship that the village has built for the king in order to find it. After the king defaults on payment for the newly built <more> |
Fell in love with this movie (by jeduthun_solyma) |
I absolutely fell in love with this movie in 1964 at age 11. I saw it a dozen times in the 2 weeks it was at a local theater. The spectacle, action, humor, setting, characters totally absorbed me. I'm glad other viewers caught the humor. One of my all-time favorite movies. I have always had a fascination with Medieval History Byzantium, North African Muslim, Spanish, Viking and I think this movie contributed a lot to it. The setting in the vaguely North African "emirate" just did it totally for me. Richard Widmark was one of my first gay crushes nice hairy chest And I <more> |
