Original one was good .....Sequelae even better..... (by kashidomar)
Right from the word where the first one ended 10 years ago , this sequelae starts it's journey. The original movie released in 2007 was one of my favourite Sci-fi movies of all time. It was an exceptional work of Jeremy Bixby who created the character John Oldman and Richard Schenkman who gave it the stage. And here after 10 year Jeremy Bixby's Son Emerson Brixby and the same director came out with even a better movie which has surprassed the original one in every aspect .The movie starts with the same john Oldman who is now a renowned professor in Northern California. No one knows here <more>
that he is usually more than 14000 years old. He has successfully hidden his identity and mystery from the surroundings. But all one a sudden his four students find the truth. Along the truth they discover some important facts regarding the old man. Soon it became more bigger and serious. The whole mankind face a real threat due to this.Like the original one this movie is a pure Sci-fi Mystery drama devoid of high Voltage actions. A sci-fi movie which is more concerned with questions and answers. Good to see john oldman returned with David Lee smith. Because no one than him is better accepted in that role as he has done exceptionally well in the first one.Now why i am saying that this movie is better than the original one? 1. It answers many questions that were originated in the first one. 2. It has more Pace 3. It contains much more activity4. It has more actions 5. It has a thrilling climax 6. It is more complete than the first one.The only drawback of this movie is this is a sequelae and many critics have a firm idea that sequelaes are always inferior than the originals. But there are exceptions. We all know terminator 2 : the Judgement day was better than the original Terminator. This movie also is a superb sequelae that usually has gone far beyond the original...Truly a sequelae of exception....a movie of completing ideas....Judge it on your own instinct and you will find the answers ...
These review are an abomination (by zacariaz-809-649537)
10 out of 10 just for the hell of it. No, it doesn't deserve it, but looking at this unending pile of unreasonable bad reviews, I think it's only fair to do my part to pull it up from the gutter. The original movie was, in many ways, a masterpiece, this is not, but is it a good movie? Is it worth watching? Absolutely. I'm serious, if you liked the first one, you don't was to miss out on this one, and if you didn't, you really have no business rating either of them, This may sound arrogant, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.What people most complain about it <more>
their expectations not being fulfilled. Well, I don't know what expectations people had, but the basic plot of this movie was exactly what you'd expect. The natural conclusion you might say, though of course it isn't concluded yet, which is the one spoiler I'll provide, and I fear very much that it won't be,concluded looking at these horrible review.Lastly, lest not forget that the first movie didn't do to well with the ratings either, at least at first, for the same reason that a crap movie like Inception could raise to the top for such a long time. Eventually though people tend to come to their senses, and I very much hope they will again, because this movie, flawed though it may be at times, deserves so much better.
bad reviews come from a ''psychological reason'' (by yvesdemaria)
When you watch the first movie, an absolute marvel, one of my top top favorite movies, you are very excited all along the movie as the mystery the question of is he really immortal ''pulls you'' in, keeps you on edge of your seat, the excitement mounts and mounts and mounts, until the last two minutes where you get your answer with the Harvard professor Boston tea party thing, so thats it, you have your answer, its finished, the lottery numbers have already been drawn, its done. After watching the first movie, you have the answer to this huge exciting mystery, so while watching <more>
the second you of course can NEVER get or find the same level of excitement as when you were watching the first one.The second one is not perfect but it still is intriguing and interesting to watch without a doubt, it is the continuity of the life of our immortal friend.
Wonderful continuation for one of the most fascinating immortals in all of Science Fiction/Fantasy! I don't regret buying the movie early and was happy to support it. I just hope to see more about John in the future. I preferred the simplistic conversational nature of the first film, but this was a enjoyable movie experience that I would love to see continued in the future.
Not the sequel we expected, but still.. (by pinkas-2)
I will be brief in this review, as others here already posted much of what I thought about this sequel. It needs to be said that the original from 2007 'The Man From Earth' is one of the best, most provoking thought, ever created. I would also like to add that the original deserved more notice from the general public, although it had gathered some following since 2007.Saying that though, it was obvious it would have been near-impossible mission to recreate the high standard of the first film script and acting. But the fans of the original had high expectations.Visually, the film looks <more>
like a low budget feature, which is understandable. It also seems it was made quickly not enough shooting days and the sound & music are quite low standard. The plot though, I find, could have been more interesting with better actors and less of a typical college American attitude, which is always an eyesore. The young actors, apart from Sterling Knight Philip were too amateurish and the screenplay given to them quite embarrassing at times. I would have loved to have seen the likes Jesse Eisenberg and Anna Kendrick in these roles. The scene between David Lee Smith John Oldman and Sterling Knight Philip was good, but was simply too short and too quick. This scene should have been the centre point of the whole film, and should have been explored more. All the running around and pointless drama were completely unnecessary. Many aspects of the film were not explored in full: John Oldman getting old, How did he end up with Carolyn Vanessa Williams and there were many questions unanswered. In the hands of a really good scriptwriter this could have been really good, but as the others say, it was not the sequel fans expected. I still gave it a 9/10 for the effort, and hoping that with better budget, the producers will bring on board better writers. Let's hope!
I truly enjoy this movie, until the end, is not just open, it just ends, all the plot lines disappear except the most awful of them, the last plot twist is just not interesting at all, I want to see more about his life, not that twisted crazy psycho stuff, they maybe went out of money and just did a rushed ending. Some of the acting was off, but the characters and dialog was decent most of the time, I like the philosophical/theistic discussion. It seems I'm the only one who saw the movie with enjoyment, I'm glad I watched another "day" in the life of a man who live so much <more>
time, I want to see more, but since I'm the only one who like something about this movie, it seems unlikely.
A good sequel to a great movie (by orestes-k-poulakis)
The first film is probably my best science fiction film. It is great to see that the creators were able to set a larger production. Not because it ever felt needed*, not to me at least, but it is satisfying to see that they were able to get recognition from the people after the first film and being able to not only make a second but expand on it. My only regret would be that I wasn't a Kickstarter backer, I just pre-ordered the movie, and so I had to wait 24 more hours.*The first film's story is great enough to stand on its own, and the second one, although different it is not a <more>
group of college professors challenging each other's intellect , still has an interesting story. I understand some people expected more of this film, but I think that the direction it takes is not bad, and in fact it is believable. The acting is quite nice, given that the students played by young actors of course, but still, played quite well have enough screentime, probably more than the professors in this film, that might make the movie feel that it tends towards a teen mystery, but I don't think that this is fair. As I said, I think the story is believable and probable, that is it fits with what could happen to John after the events in the cabin at 2007.I really like the speculation that John and Harry have at the last minutes about what's happening to John, and I see it as a major point in this film. Also, the last scene's sort-of cliffhanger might feel a bit odd, but I think it can be justified and opens a good potential to start exploring the vast past of John. So I have no objections to that, nor to the less conversing story. So all in all, I would say that 8/10 is a fair score here, and I really hope they get to explore more of the story in the future
I gotta hand it to Jenkins, he sold me with the story about the story. I donated money for both films before I had even seen the first.Yes, this sequel is not quite as deep as the original. There is a bit more drama. Maybe that's what producers need in order to fund a project. I don't know.I really enjoyed the beginning and the near end the best. There was mostly drama in the middle that left me a little dry but I got over it and still managed 8 stars.I want to see more. What does Holocene man become? Is the Holocene over? If God exists, he wouldn't care that it took 14,000 years <more>
to get the word out, right? All I can say is: More More More.
The sequel I have waited years for. (by ianschuessele-40988)
The biggest argument I have heard is that this sequel was not as good as the original, not as able to be enjoyed over and over. Well that is true, but that can be said of many films and their sequels. The Man from Earth Holocene is a good film to watch, especially for fans of the original story, it furthers the story, has a heart skipping scene where everything seems lost, explores John's relationships with his students, it was all about the colleagues previously and expresses John's feelings on his mortality in this world and where his journey will go nicely. We are left with quite <more>
the cliff hanger as to what will happen next with John, what ever happened to young Phillip and what was up with that ending after the credits, that was a scary introduction, perhaps to Episode 3? Reminds me of the villain from the TV Series Forever in 2014 . I assume this might be the man John met who he was sure was immortal and then thought he saw again, but lost in the crowd of a train station? If so, John may be in trouble now...
