Plot: While traveling abroad, a guy falls for a Romanian beauty whose unreachable heart has its origins in her violent, charismatic ex. Runtime: 103 mins Release Date: 13 Sep 2013
At the end of this movie my reaction was - 'WTF ! !' - I had no idea what to make of this story. It was just stupid ... I was as lost at what to make of it as Charlie was in seeking love and purpose. But the movie had one thing very important going for it, it kept my attention and I wanted to know just what was the fate of Charlie Countryman. Then it occurred to me that this movie is just like a graphic novel ! The scenes, the pace of the story, the action, the dialog, the exaggerated faces of the central characters, Gabi's overly done makeup, Charlie's perpetual innocent <more>
expression and unending energy, the spooky ugliness of Nigel, the demon like Darko and the anger displayed by Victor. All these characterizations can be found in action packed romantic graphic novels. Once I considered the movie in this context, suddenly everything made sense and I'm now crazy for this flick.I have no idea if this was Fredrik Bond's intention - but it works for me! It's beautifully photographed, loaded with wonderful characters, dialog is fantastic, and every scene is its' own art. It's a must see for cinema fans!
This is by far one of the best films I have seen in many years very emotional through and through. This Movie had me in a constant state of wondering what could possibly happen next. I love movies that really pull you in and cause you to experience all the emotions with each character. It takes a great mind and cast to accomplish such a task. Every actor was simply amazing it was a flawless execution. I will be thinking about this movie for awhile it just sticks with you and tugs at your very soul.I can't wait to hear from friends and family what they thought of this.I am surely <more>
Words cannot describe how amazing this movie is.. (by sean78745)
I do not consider myself a writer, reviewer or general word smith by any means.. But this film has the potential to be one of the best movies I have ever seen. The dialogue is near perfect, almost wisps you along like the wind on a beach. The cinematography has a "requiem for a dream" like landscape but at the same time calm and opiate like. The score flows just like the cello playing actress who nails her role PERFECTLY. The only and I mean only thing I might say that is somewhat flawed is Shia's clichéd looks and glances, but other than that it is the best I have ever seen <more>
out of him as well. In fact, I won't tell you anything else other than to see this film NOW and know that I had to make this account and write this review halfway through the film just to give it justice!
Dark Mysterious tale well cast well acted just odd enough to be diffident from the mainstream. Perfect locations were sort and used to full effect giving a realist feel to this movie. Breathing life into a film that stands head and shoulders above many a middle of the road attempt of this sort of strange super natural oddball movie. Elements of genesis are running through it with clever one liners from a unhinged gangster played to great effect. To sum up this film reminded me why i watch so many movies in a hope to fine one like this as good as this nowadays seems about one great movie in 25 <more>
LaBeouf is my kind of actor; one can't argue that he's not dedicated! (by Hellmant)
'CHARLIE COUNTRYMAN': Four and a Half Stars Out of Five Shia LaBeouf stars in this indie crime drama/comedy/romance film from first time feature film director Fredrik Bond. Matt Drake wrote the screenplay and Evan Rachel Wood, Mads Mikkelsen, Til Schweiger, Rupert Grint and Melissa Leo co-star. The movie is kind of an Art House action love story that explores life, love and death through the eyes of an everyman American traveling in Romania. It's a great career move for LaBeouf, who is awesome in it!LaBeouf stars in the title role as a young American named Charlie Countryman. His <more>
mother Kate Leo just died and he has a vision of her shortly after telling him to go to Bucharest. Charlie hops on a flight there and meets a man named Victor Ion Caramitru , in the seat next to him, who dies before they land. He has a vision of Victor shortly after his death as well and believes he needs to deliver a message to his daughter, Gabi Wood , for him. Upon meeting Gabi Charlie falls instantly in love with her. The only problem is Gabi is married to a violent criminal Mikkelsen who now wants Charlie dead. The story is pretty simple and not too original but the directing and performances are anything but. LaBeouf is fantastic in the lead, giving perhaps his best performance since the Disney kids' film 'HOLES' in 2003 . I've always been a fan of his since 'HOLES' and think he's both a very talented actor and an inspiring young man. I like how he says what he thinks and does what he wants, without worrying what anyone thinks of him. He does take things a little too far sometimes, when he's drunk or on drugs and partying, but so do I I try to live my life the same way . I heard he really dropped acid for the scenes he's on drugs in this film that's my kind of actor and one can't argue that he's not dedicated . I've also been a fan of Evan Rachel Wood since she broke onto the scene with the movie 'THIRTEEN' also in 2003 . She gives one of her best performances in this movie as well and has never been sexier. Mikkelsen is once again classically memorable as another great villain also. Bond's directing is undeniably impressive and I can't wait to see what he does next. I also look forward to seeing LaBeouf continue to diversify himself by tackling more and more different kinds of roles hopefully primarily in unique indie films like this one .Watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v JYWAOd_o4Sk
perfect mix, Trainspotting meets In Bruge (by radulucian)
Sometimes it felt like Trainspotting, sometimes it was In Bruge, with the occasional midget and several other similar ingredients. But never too much like any oh them or any other. One well deserved A- for this one.Remarkable lighting throughout the movie, a la film-noir, with excellent mix of dialogs, present scenes and inserted back-flashes. Even the day lightning fits perfectly in the movie atmosphere, as mornings are quickly faded into evenings so the beautiful night lighting can sneak back in the narration. And yes, this is one movie that will create an atmosphere, even if you don't <more>
realize it until it's finished, with a soundtrack that's simple but strong.Certain metaphors are looping through the movie and are being passed on from character to character. And apart from the feminine main character, there's little to reproach to this movie. Speaking of characters, Rupert Grint in particular makes the role of his life, I never thought I'd ever like him after Harry Potter.I also noticed they managed to show bits and pieces of Bucharest, places one should not miss when visiting. It may not be as pregnant as "In Bruge", where I promised myself I'd visit at some point in my life, but still going strong. My favorite moment in the movie? Slow-motion with Charlie running in front of a green fence with a painted stylized man running...Oh, and I hate the Bucharest / Budapest pseudo-confusion, but it benefited the movie well.
It seems like people have recently become quite callous because otherwise I couldn't understand why this excellent romantic semi-comedy/semi-drama/semi-crime story with excellent likable characters and a lot of love couldn't be highly appreciated. It's not like this movies is without its flaws, for instance sometimes it dragged on and some parts of it could have been easily cut out without affecting the story in any way. What you are about to see is a crazy love story involuntarily intertwined with the criminal world. It's not about being a hero and conquering the love of your <more>
life when you are lost, it's just about following the emotions which bring you to life.I'd recommend this movie to anyone who thinks of himself as a romantic person, and I'd definitely recommend it to all ladies.
Though a strange movie, it is also one of the most compelling ones that I didn't go to a theater to see. (by Amari-Sali)
People often wonder why actors are paid millions of dollars for movies, and the reason is name recognition. This film I never heard of, but because Shia LaBeouf is in it; Evan Rachel Wood, who I haven't seen in anything for some time; Rupert Grint; and Melissa Leo, I gave it a chance. And, I'm quite glad I did.Characters & StoryThe story focuses on one Charlie Countryman played by Shia LaBeouf whose mother Kate played by Melissa Leo has just died. So, with his mother's post-mortem advice, he ends up going off to Bucharest. On his way he meets the father of Gabi played by <more>
Evan Rachel Wood who dies on the plane ride over, but through him knowing her dad, something sparks. However, with Gabi having a complicated relationship with her ex Nigel played by Mads Mikkelsen she doesn't seem free to date. Thus leading us on a wild tale of Charlie meeting two crazy guys, one of which played by Rupert Grint, and him ending up in some weird situation with the mob. All of which gives you this crazy thriller, with a romantic plot sewed in, which is so insane. Yet, at the same time so good.PraiseThere is so much to praise in this film. The music was well done and set a beautiful tone, the places they filmed were beautiful and showed both the side of Eastern Europe, Bucharest - Romania specifically, that we are used to seeing in horror films, yet at the same time showing us the beauty of a country which has gone through so much over the centuries. Then there is the writing which has one or two hiccups, but for the most part is something easy to understand, with a tad a of mystery, but overall really gives the actors a lot to work with. LaBeouf makes a great lead and shows that the years of doing Transformers has prepped him for handling a film like this; Wood pulls off a Eastern accent well enough so that while she does sound like how we are often told Eastern Europeans sound like, it doesn't seem like she is mocking their people, but truly is trying to be one of them. Then there is Mikkelsen. His performance was on the level of a Bond villain. He was crazy passionate about a woman who once was in love with him and would go mad if anyone tried to take her from him. Also, he had this really cool background, of which not a huge amount of details were given, but god he seemed like such a bad ass. At the same time though, he maintained that same cool and cold demeanor that he has on Hannibal. I would say, though perhaps it wouldn't be best for his career, that he could easily typecast himself as a villain for the rest of his career and make a lot of money doing it. Especially since Hollywood hasn't really moved on from having the villain being someone from Eastern Europe/ Russia completely yet.CriticismWhich leads to the one thing I didn't get about this film. Three times in the film we see Charlie talk to a dead person. Twice being his mom, and one time he speaks with the corpse of Gabi's father, and I wondered why only those two did he ever speak to. And while the lack of clarity with Nigel was good for the character, us never learning if Charlie had a gift or something just seemed weird. I mean, if he simply talked to his mom then it would have made sense since he would be grieving, but with him talking to Gabi's father, that complicated things and left us with a guy who maybe a medium, but only uses said power 3 times.Overall: Worth Seeing It is weird to feel a sort of rush after seeing a movie. Maybe it is because I haven't watched a thriller in a really long time, but god was this movie the best thing to reintroduce me to the genre. Pretty much, to me anyway, everything was on point and outside of the odd character trait Charlie has with speaking with the dead, there isn't anything really to pick on. So, that is why I'm saying it is worth seeing.
I never knew Bucharest could look this good: (by laur_p)
This movie really surprised me; I think this was one of , if not THE best Shia LaBeouf performance looking forward for nymphomaniac .The story is pretty simple and suffers from some plot holes but the movie strangely kept me glued to the sit wondering where Shia LeBeouf's journey of self discovering in the unknown city of Bucharest will get him.The casting choice for the lead female role was a little odd, i think it would've worked a little better with a more "traditional hot"-looking girl Also noted should be the brilliant soundtrack of this movie especially Moby's <more>
contribution . must listen: Moby -- After Drumsound & Bassline Smith Remix from the subway chase scene. To sum up, this movie was a very nice surprise, the kind that keeps me watching and trying to discover the unappreciated beauty in the not-so-mainstream movies. My Rating - 8/10
