just watched this film tonight and joined IMDb subsequently due to how impressed i was. got home from work late and turned the lights off and put the horror on. film flew by from start to finish. i watch a lot of horrors and think about eighty percent are rubbish, however this was very engrossing. acting all round was excellent didn't expect that and story was kind of believable which is odd for this type of film. very intelligently made film. everything made sense from start to finish. short sweet and to the point film. no messing about. i don't like drawn out two hour plus films. <more>
no comedy in the film which i like. if i want to watch a comedy, i pick a comedy. not the best film i seen in my life but for what it is, very impressive. well, I'm kind of to the point myself so hope anyone who watches it enjoys it. doubt anyone could dislike it. and congratulations to anyone involved in the film and hope there's bigger projects in the pipeline.
I'm not so good in English, but i'll do anything to help that film. : I see many horrors movies every weeks around 6 or 7 from all around the world , and THE SHRINE is an intelligent and strong one. Three characters that we care about... a good story...and many greats horrors scenes. I told you....GO SEE IT !! A real and good scary film like we had in the eighties. Two years ago, i liked JACK BROOKS MONSTER SLAYER from the same director, but i should admit that THE SHRINE is more my type of films. No comedy....just horror !! And the director made his home works. It's easy to <more>
understand that he is a horror fan himself. I'll be there for his next movie. JON KNAUTZ is a director name to remembered. If you are tired to pay for another worst remake who like them anyway ???!! , you must take a look on THE SHRINE. And i hope distributors will understand what horrors fans really wants and show THE SHRINE around the world. If you liked BLACK Sunday and the first EVIL DEAD, you'll love this movie. For me, it's the surprise of the FANTASIA FEST 2010.
This one caught me by surprise and I am so happy that it did. So many movies are predictable and I can figure out the plot almost immediately. So for me this was a refreshing change. You sit mesmerized and just let it wash over you. That is what I recommend. Give it a chance and try to understand that not understanding the dialogue is the point. You do not have to understand the words. The intentions are clear as day and very plain to see Just watch and let your emotions carry you through to the end. The scenery is very well done and completely believable. It is not just a horror film but <more>
something more. Which is fantastic considering how many bad horror films there are out there. This movie had a bit of a Hitchcock theme to it in that you do not see everything. But you can feel it using your imagination. That is something that has been lost in films over the years. Lost among a sea of teenage grouping of bad actors pretending to be scared and then..suddenly a gem like this will come to light and you can feel hope again.I have hope again in movies thanks to this masterpiece. This movie is untouchable. There is nothing out there like it and that is a promise. Go watch this please.
The Shrine is a film where the proverbial rug gets pulled out from under you, but in such a way that watching it from start to finish is imperative! It's world premiere at the 2010 Fantasia festival gave us a nice little horror shocker evening of entertainment and I sincerely hope this gets picked up by a distributor for a wide release soon. The disappearances of several tourists over years prompts a trio of young Americans on a fact finding mission to rural Poland, searching for a missing backpacker who's the latest foreign statistic linked to a small village in that country. What <more>
Carmen Cindy Sampson , Marcus Aaron Ashmore and Sara Meghan Heffern discover will change not just their lives, but the whole foundation of life for many others who'd prefer to keep certain matters a secret. This film directed by Jon Knautz is full of surprises, all of which are better left to your discovery process when watching. Let's just say everything isn't as it might first appear when the 3 arrive at their destination and begin poking around for answers. Their inquiry isn't welcomed by the unfriendly local toughs, who strongly encourage them all to go away immediately. Of course, they do not, then the dangerous stakes start increasing by the second. An unusual forest attraction leads to the dramatic shift in just what they believe might have taken place regarding the fate of the recently vanished Eric Taylor Ben Lewis . The Shrine has some moments one must see and hear to truly grasp and gasp at . A couple lines of dialogue ring out like gallows humour from an executioner's rifle. The frantic desire to escape the hell awaiting those who don't follow horror film logic are cranked up to 11 on the freaky amplifier of shocking cinema. If you don't understand Polish, well, don't let that stand in your way of appreciating this fine example of supernaturally driven craziness! Much of the dialogue is in that Eastern European language and untranslated, but it's only to maintain the schism we North Americans and other English speakers experience as strangers in a strange land. Our attempts to guess what will happen next are pretty much useless and my advice is just watch and enjoy a wild ride through an inside turned out world we'll thankfully never encounter!
I couldn't agree more with the previous reviewer. This goes into my top 50 scariest horror movies. Well done and without too much gore, just good scary storytelling, well-acted too. Seemed to push me buttons and even the what I refer to as cheap thrills made me jump when I knew it was coming. That impresses me. Try this one. I am an avid horror buff and I give this TWO THUMBS UP! The film maker seems to understand that there are certain visuals that scare us all... but may be different for each viewer. They touch on each of these at least a little. From the supernatural to death and the <more>
dead. From torture and captivity, to the mysterious and mystical. There is a scare in here for anyone and everyone. I really hope everyone enjoys this just close to how much I did!
Despite the negative reviews, I really liked this movie. (by MisterCrit)
The acting was far from superb, but I loved the plot, the location, and the twists. I thought this was a unique film, and to be quite honest, I have not seen many other films like it. I've now watched this movie three times. I still liked it each time. I am a big fan of the religious or pseudo-religious-themed horror sub-genre, and again, this was a very unique and creative movie. I have to give kudos to the writers, who I believe came up with an engaging and innovative idea that took off in an indie, alt-horror, film fest kind of way. I was not distracted by the visual effects, which I <more>
thought were used sparingly and relatively tastefully I mean, it's a horror film, let's not forget the caliber of visuals generally inherent to the genre . Nor was I thrown off too much by the aforementioned acting issues. All in all, I would-- and have-- recommended this film. Watch it with an open mind and judge for yourself. I would love to see more moody, atmospheric films like this, and fewer Saw and Saw rip-off torture flicks. Enough with the gore, let's get to some substance.
More intelligent than many horror films. Yes it is a horror film, but it is not all gore and guts. Note that it does not fall into the other end of the spectrum as just a thriller either there is some blood . It is an original, well done production that strikes me as unlike most of the horror of 2010.The strong points would be better acting than many films of the genre, characters that are smarter than most horror movie characters they still do some stupid things, but they don't know they are in a horror movie , and some nice creepy effects. If you watch it then be aware that when <more>
people are not speaking English and there are no subtitles this is intentional. There is nothing wrong with the version you are watching. Hang in there. Context will tell you what you need to know.
Great Story, Not so great production and direction decisions (by addicteddior)
The movie has a great twist and entertaining storyline. Had all of the subtleties of a great horror flick and could have done really well. Money was wasted on gore scenes would have been better served on costumes and effects. The shooting location should have actually been Poland because the dialects were unconvincing and Im not even polish .I loved the fact that I was really drawn into the story and wanted to know what was going to happen. The acting was good enough for any horror film and I was even impressed by some of the actors. The viewer's perspective really gave a mystery aspect <more>
and made me feel as confused as the characters would have been in a foreign situation. I applaud that they didn't need subtitles to move the story along. When film was over I still felt it was very entertaining and satisfied my horror craving. Just a little low brow with the gore.
A little gem of a horror movie (by crazycow-843-404456)
The Shrine, 3 friends head off to a distant land in search of a story. Thats the story in a nutshell without me giving away any spoilers. The script here was a very interesting one, it starts off slow, but gets moving along quite nicely. The acting was good, sure... it's not Oscar worthy, but it was good enough to keep me watching, everyone did a good job. I would like to praise the directing of the movie, it's nice to see good directing in unknown horror movies, it's a rare thing in my mind. This movie gave a good eerie feeling, which most horror movies fails at, it has a good <more>
amount of gore to keep those fans happy, but also gives us some twist and turns to keep ppl interested in watching. Overall, good acting, good directing, decent script, a very enjoyable watch. Final verdict - 8 out of 10, i would recommend any fans of horror to watch this, even if u are not a fan, i still suggest you watch this.
