A shocking and disturbing road accident leaves a socialist professor/political activist Ahmedi (Prosenjit Chatterjee) in critical condition . Ahmedi's adheren Shalini (Kalki Koechlin) believes it to be a premeditated murder. A pornographer (Emraan Hashmi) claims to have documented proof on the mishap that will bring the government down. A high-ranking bureaucrat (Abhay Deol) is brought in by the government for damage control and investigation. As days go by, those involved discover a hidden secret in the governments sector: a vision of a new metropolis, a pipe dream, a dream called "Shanghai".

Satyeveer also authored a fictional novel 'Manorama' that sold only about 200 copies. So dismayed was he with this that he decided to not even keep a copy for his private library. To make matters worse he accepts a motorbike from Seema Constructions as a bribe, is apprehended, and suspended pending an inquiry. Now out of a job, he is approached by Manorama Rathore, the wife of the Irrigation Minister, to collect evidence that her husband is having an extra-marital affair for a fee of Twenty thousand rupees. Satyaveer accepts this offer little knowing that he will soon be thrust into a web of lies and deceit, which will not only get him in the bad books of Rathore, assaulted by his goons, but also implicate him in the murder of two lovers, Sameera, and Dr. Anil Poddar, compounded all the more by the sudden death of Manorama and the disappearance of an orphan named Deepti.

Then there's the Gujrati couple Hitesh and Shilpa who can't get anywhere near each other without scrabbling, the super-compatible Parsi couple Aspi and Zara, and the oddball NRI husband Bunty with his desi, fun-loving wife Madhu. An uptight and insecure Bengali man, Partho, is very much in love with his beautiful, free-spirited wife Milly. And rounding off the sextet are the Kapoors, the Punjabi couple comprising of talkative Pinky and contemplative Vicky. The film starts off with the start of the bus journey, and a couple of red herrings, like Shilpa crying her eyes out at going on the honeymoon. Then there's an opinionated bus driver, and a mysterious motor-bike rider following the bus. And while everything looks lovey-dovey in the beginning, with familiarity and time, problems crop up. How each couple deals with their own specific problems is the rest of the film.

local-train to return home to Vikhroli. Asked to leave the platform by a Hawaldar, he goes looking for an alternate place to hang out until the next train at 4:10 AM. He meets with a stranded woman, Madhu, and both find out that auto-rickshaws are on a flash strike due to a bomb blast at Ghatkopar. Their attempts to find alternate transportation are in vain, the duo then attend a bar and this is where both their lives will be turned upside down.

w years later, the boy is still in love with the girl, Zoya (Sonam Kapoor). When she's in school, he follows her around holding her hand and getting slapped in the process. Finally, she relents because of his "consistency". The film shifts cities when Zoya gets into JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University), and through her, we are introduced to the idealistic and political culture of the place. She discovers a long-lost strength as she confronts and then falls for student leader Akram (Abhay Deol). The film takes a turn when Zoya returns to her hometown after eight long years only to find some things changed, and others surprisingly the same.
