Plot: After serving as a bridesmaid 27 times, a young woman wrestles with the idea of standing by her sister's side as her sibling marries the man she's secretly in love with. Runtime: 111 mins Release Date: 18 Jan 2008
This movie was terrific. Yes, it was the typical chick flick, yet I found the script just completely entrancing. The script did set this movie apart from the others. It was witty and funny. The acting was extremely well done. Katherine Heigl is so amazing. I couldn't imagine anyone better for the role of Jane. But my favorite person was James Marsden. I absolutely fell in love him. He was so clever and his smile was to die for. I did actually fear seeing this movie, thinking that it would be completely different from all the great reviews and that it would entirely ruin my night. On the <more>
contrary, it made my night all the better. I haven't seen a movie like this in awhile. I would certainly suggest seeing it ASAP.
On Thursday, December 27, my friends and I went to the sneak preview of "27 Dresses". At first, I wasn't excited to see it because I thought it would be just another cheesy romantic comedy, "chick-flick" if you will. I was wrong. "27 Dresses" was a romantic comedy everyone could enjoy. That's right! I said EVERYONE including guys .Katherine Heigl is great in the film as Jane, the optimistic bridesmaid who wants a shot of love for herself someday and feels the the 27 bridesmaid dresses she keeps in her closet is a calling that its time for her to get a <more>
dress of a different kind.Judy Greer, who's always "the best friend" in the movies, is very comical and sassy as Katherine's friend Casey. At least she knows what she wants, but she's very compassionate and supportive to Jane throughout the film. One person, though, that I think stood out in this film, was James Marsden. I've always seen him in action movies "X-Men" series and "Superman Returns as a minor or supporting character, but I think that he made the male lead of Kevin his own. Although he gets on Jane's nerves half the time, he always tends to put on a smile on her face because she knows that he's trying to get her to let go of the past and move on to a possible future where her big day might come. Kevin's the guy you would want to confide in if something's troubling you or if you need to dance to an Elton John song to get your groove back.If you should see any movie this new year, make a date with "27 Dresses". You'll be happy that you did.
I went to see 27 Dresses today. It was a great movie, definitely in my top 5. A great laugh, the line for the movie was out the cinema doors, and the cinema was packed. 27 Dresses is so funny that at times, the whole audience was laughing so loud, that I couldn't hear the movie. can't wait for it's release on DVD. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves a laugh! But if you hate predictability then maybe you should give it a pass. James Marsden and actress Katherine Heigl Grey's Anatomy acted so well, there was chemistry between the characters and it made the movie <more>
so much more enjoyable. 27 Dresses is an utterly hilarious, and ultimately comedic movie with that romance which softens it. 10/10 A+ !!
I wasn't expecting much from this movie. I went to see it with a bunch of girlfriends not really thinking it would be anymore then your usual rom-com but I was very pleasantly surprised! Right from the start I could tell it would be something more than I had thought because the opening scenes had me laughing so hard -and thats saying something, because it takes a lot to make me laugh. The script was clever and witty and although sometimes certain aspects were predictable, you were always very engaged in the story and the characters. The acting was solid the entire film, I was already a <more>
huge fan of Katherine Heigl but after watching this and 'Enchanted' I am now also in love with James Marsden! The atmosphere in the cinema when i saw this movie was great, you could tell everyone was enjoying themselves. I enjoyed myself so much in fact, that I am going to watch the movie again tomorrow with my sister!
Don't even wait 27 MINUTES before making plans to see this wonderful film (by inkblot11)
Jane Katherine Heigl is in love with her environmentally conscious boss, George Edward Burns . But, although he relies on her great organizational skills as a personal assistant, he doesn't think of her in romantic terms and she is too shy to push the envelope. Adding insult to injury, Jane has been a bridesmaid in 27 different weddings but has never been close to marriage herself. When her younger sister Tess Malin Akerman arrives in town, Jane takes her along to an office party. This turns out to be a capital offense as George promptly takes a big shine to Tess. Heartbroken, Jane <more>
has a brief meeting with a writer named Kevin James Marsden , a true cynic of "happily ever after" and her spirits plummet even further. Yet, things go into hyperdrive when George proposes to Tess and Kevin turns out to be the wedding reporter for a major newspaper. With Jane forced to help out with the wedding plans, she has several more encounters with Kevin, including a night where they both get a bit tipsy. Is something stirring between Jane and the ultimate scoffer of romance? This is a wonderful movie with an intelligent, very funny script and a marvelous cast. Heigl is terrific as the much put-upon romantic dreamer and Marsden is quite charming as the reporter. Watch them both get a little drunk and sing new lyrics for "Benny and the Jets" and you have a priceless little slice of cinematic wonder. Also good are the handsome Burns, the beach-beautiful Akerman, and, best of all, the irrepressible Judy Greer as Jane's best bud. The costumes are attractive, the New York setting is very lovely, and the film glows brightly with excellent production values. Mostly, though, hats off to the supremely funny and touching script and the very-sure direction. To be brief, don't let even 27 more minutes go by before you make arrangements to see this bonafide winner. Even those who barely tolerate "chick flicks" will be charmed by this one, in a big, big way.
Amidst the formula of "27 Dresses", Katherine Heigl's Jane, wearing one of her 27 bridesmaid dresses, tells James Marsden's Kevin, "Someday, it'll be my day " Kevin had asked Jane why she keeps being everyone's bridesmaid. Heigl's response and silence are so strikingly touching and moving. The surprise of "27 Dresses" is that it is really about finding love and going after what you want. I was interested in this chick movie, because it was written by Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote the screenplay for "The Devil Wears Prada". "27 <more>
Dresses" is formulaic and predictable, no doubt about this. However, Director Anne Fletcher's movie has humor and great heart. Katherine Heigl and James Marsden are amazing, and have wonderful chemistry. Heigl, who is stunningly beautiful, displays emotional depth and comfortable charm. I enjoyed her here more than in "Knocked Up". James Marsden "X-Men" is finally leveraged for his unique talents. This started with "Enchanted", now here in "27 Dresses". Marsden has a mercurial presence. He is very versatile. He is hysterical with Heigl as they drunkenly sing Elton John's "Bennie and the Jets" in some dive bar. He is solid and vulnerable when he confesses to Jane, "You deserve more " So "27 Dresses" is predictable, pretty much after the first 10 minutes. Big deal. However, McKenna wonderfully unveils and reveals Jane and Kevin, throughout. She displays a particularly poignant touch about their favorite part of weddings. Fletcher and McKenna deliver humor and humanity in what could have been rather ordinary.Jane's passion is weddingsother people's weddings. She even has a favorite Wedding columnist in the New York Journal. Actually, she possesses mastery as bridesmaid. When we first see Jane she is multitasking between two weddings. Basically, Jane can't say "No." Kevin Marsden , who is a reporter covering one of the weddings, assists Jane after an unfortunate "jump ball" for the bridal bouquet. Kevin is on to Jane's bridesmaid glitch. After taking Jane home, Kevin under whelms her with his cynicism. Jane forgets her planner which has all her wedding schedules in their taxi. Kevin recovers her planner, and after reading it tells his editor Maureen great Melora Hardin that he may have a story about Jane.Meanwhile, Jane holds a torch for her charismatic boss George Edward Burns . Her pal Casey funny Judy Greer reminds Jane that she should either get a life or tell George. Unfortunately, Jane's younger sister Tess aloof Malin Akerman returns home. George falls for Tess, even though Tess is an obvious bitch and self serving liar. Well, I guess she is pretty and sexy. Eventually, George and Tess plan to marry, and Jane again is the bridesmaid. Jane is planning the wedding for her sister, who is marrying the man she loves. This does not escape Casey and Kevin. Kevin, hurt from a previous relationship, gets a glimpse at Jane's life and who she really is. He sees that she deserves someone great.Doesn't take being a rocket scientist to figure how things may resolve. A few things are glaringly goofy about "27". For one thing, Tess played by Akerman is a completely unsympathetic bitch. Although the narrative ends gracefully for her, she is vapid and soulless. Consequently, George Burns comes off as complete idiot for choosing her. Akerman may be attractive, but Heigl as Jane is beautiful. Heigl playing it as "plain" Jane is a little ridiculous. Judy Greer is great as Casey, Jane's funny muse of common sense. She could have been leveraged more in "27".Ultimately, Heigl and Marsden elevate and rescue "27 Dresses". Heigl has star presence that makes you rout for Jane to get what she deservesa great life. She is smart, funny, and always touchingly believable. In a quiet scene where her Dad Brian Kerwin gives their mother's wedding dress to Tess, you can feel Heigl's soul empty. Marsden has an easy charm and compassionate depth. He too is wonderful in his silence, and hysterical in his rants. Along with Fletcher and McKenna, they implore charm and heart to overcome the movie's rough spots, and make "27 Dresses" unexpectedly fun and touching.
For many the plot of this movie feels formulaic and revisited. Jane Katherine Heigl is the people-pleaser of the century. A somewhat spineless nice girl who can't say no to anyone, she has been a bridesmaid 27 times, often exceeding her duties in every wedding. For all her romantic yearnings, she can't seem to hook her boss, George Ed Burns whom she has been in love with for years. When her self-centered little sister Tess Malin Akerman comes in and manages to snag George, Jane once again capitulates to everyone's needs but her own. In comes Kevin James Marsden , a <more>
newspaper columnist stuck covering weddings who yearns to break out and write about more important things. Under the pretense of covering George and Tess's wedding, he really is writing about Jane and her perpetual bridesmaid stints. Complications ensue etc. etc.For me, what really made this movie was the performances. Katherine Heigl did an absolutely fantastic job playing the woman that I'm sure everyone has felt like at one time. She brought a lot of spice to what could have been a one-note role. James Marsden is also pitch-perfect as the cynical reporter, a foil to Jane. It helps that they have good fight-and-kiss chemistry. Also, for me the story line was not as tired and recycled as people made it out to be. It had some fresh spin and I really enjoyed it. I also preferred the ending to this movie to many chick-flick comedies which leave things open-ended and almost unrealistic. 27 Dresses wraps up all the plot lines in one neat sequence that is a truly worthy finale. All in all, as far as romances and rom-coms go, this one shot to the top of my list.
"Bridezilla meets Bennie and The Jets" and delivers a nice romance (by screenwriter-14)
Once again Katherine Heigl gives an audience a very crowd pleasing performance with a character who you root for from the very first scene as "Bridesmaid of the Year" and a supporting cast that enhances the journey and the story. Yes, the story is formulaic and even a bit corny at times, but in a sea of films out now that are dark and dreary, it is just great to watch the beautiful, intelligent and talented Heigl appear in wedding after wedding in 27 DRESSES until she meets the man of her dreams. The shots of New York make the film zing along, and with the handsome Edward Burns as <more>
the "man of desire", he is outpaced by the charming James Marsden as the new Prince Charming. I can hardly wait for another Heigl film.
I loved this movie. I went in to it with low expectations because I had heard a lot of criticism about it, but they were totally wrong. This movie is hilarious!! We were laughing our butts off and everyone in the movie theater really got into it clapping, cheering, gasping . James Marsden plays a great character, with a lot of funny lines. Katherine Heigl's character, Jane, is great because she's just like your best friend. If you like 'chick flicks' then this is a movie for you, take all your friends and boyfriends the guys really got into it too! totally worth the $7 <more>
admission. I plan to buy this when it comes out on DVD.
