First off, I'm giving this movie a 10 to boost its rating, since people are all ready bashing it way too hard, and almost seem to hype it like some new "worst movie ever" type of film, even though most of their focus primarily is on the CGI and acting and perhaps the somewhat misleading trailer - even though the movie is actually quite original with a lot of atmosphere, genre-blending like humor, horror, sci-fi, action and "end-of the world" done okay, even though genres have been mixed more smoothly - but also a lot worse. And last but not least this cool <more>
"what would you do if it happened" kind of vibe. Plus it has a couple of okay twists and surprises..Besides the CGI isn't really THAT bad, I mean it's not photo realistic Avatar stuff like people have been used to now, and of course the movie WOULD benefit from it, if it was better, but it's definitely still not the worst out there either. A lot of the movies in the mid 90's that were CGI heavy that we still praise are actually more or less the same like this.Besides the CGI in this is more to set up the scenario and atmosphere and tell the story - it isn't really a "humans in war with aliens" film, even though the trailer somewhat sells it that way, which actually is a shame, since it has a lot more going for it, than just that..And the same with acting - it's not Oscar material, but most of the cast manages to convince, which in my eyes is sufficient enough in a movie like this. All in all I'd say that it's a solid 6/7 out of 10 movie - and people who like new twists on the whole "alien/doomsday scenario" will definitely like it. So to quote Public Enemy; "Don't believe the hype" and check it out with an open mind.
For starters, I gave the film 10/10 because it's very underrated.Like previous reviewers said, this sure is no Star Wars film in terms of CGI, but for me, it was sufficient to the development of the plot, so I don't mind. It's sad how nowadays without high end CGI, the film of this genre cannot have a better rating. The acting is superb, you can really CARE for the characters because they deliver what is needed - emotion, and they are very persuading. Also it is a very tense movie, your gut will twist for enough times to experience the thrill of UFO invasion. To action film lovers, <more>
this film WILL satisfy your needs, for there are very brutal scenes. If you take the film seriously which is hard for most of people if they cannot suspend their disbelief or just do not like SciFi films , you will enjoy the heavy drama around few friends who wen't through very extraordinary situations, their fear and a strong will to survive the chaos that arose, thankfully to the quite long introduction to their lives. Without the first part of the film, there wouldn't be any contrast of ordinary life and alien invasion. This film has much depth unlike many other SciFi films, and that won me, and I'm sure that it will have a similar effect on other viewers if they gave it a try.To conclude, you really must turn on the switch in your mind to understand the film and the plot, probably even to use a bit of your imagination. That's brilliant if you ask me, quite contrary to very common Hollywood "give everything on a silver platter" motto.
From the pulsating, funky, and party time start to the shocking but welcome end twist this was a welcome change to the norm. The anti racist undertone set out by the early supermarket scene had whispers of Mandela. The moment that Jean Claude gave his life to explode was moving too. The thought provoking ending makes this a must for all film buffs. Too often are women portrayed as pieces of meat and not as truly credible actresses. This film bucks the trend by having both blonde AND brunette ladies, and one wore trousers. The cgi involved was amazing with what seemed like real spaceships <more>
shooting people and being able to show what extraterrestrial technology is surely like.
A great film. Great premiere. Lots of really interesting and novel story lines and twists from Dom, I wished they could have been explored a bit further.Maya Grant stars! Amazing performance. Definitely One to Watch! www.thehollywoodnews.com/2011/08/24/one-to-watch-maya-grantGreat fight scenes; JCVD has still got it! The CGI was so good for a low budget film, really well done. Then there was lots of funny one-liners, so the film had a bit of a 'Shaun of the Dead' come 'War of the Worlds' feel.Such a shame it looks like it is going straight to DVD.
This is a GOOD film, ignore the bad reviews and judge for yourself! (by cemms2001)
OK, before I carry on I will say I rarely write a review for anything but I was inclined to do one for this film. This is not a bad film! Simple as that. The acting of some of the characters is a little bit dodgy but not as bad as some soap opera's I have recently seen.It starts off a little slow but then you get drawn into the story and start to think if this actually happened what would you do? Would you loot and steal your way through the madness that's been bestowed on the world or would you abide by the law and try to ride out the storm? This is a great story that really does build <more>
up to a great climax and I love the way it plays out to the finale with Van Damme and his daughter Bianca Bree, a classic in my book. Also, the twist in the tale is quality, didn't expect it!Do yourself a favour, get this movie by any means, it really is quite superb. Judge for yourselves.
UFO is out of this world! (by lisanicole-491-342853)
To say I am profoundly impressed with UFO would be an understatement; the best cinematic experiences, in my eyes, are the ones that don't leave you once you're back home from the cinema or when the DVD is turned off and certainly UFO falls into that category. What may seem on the surface as a mindless action film, is in reality something much darker, much more intricate. It achieves that rare feat of servicing the action junkie in me whilst engaging my brain on an entirely different level. I totally accept that this film works as a thriller, an action movie and even at times as a <more>
comedy and a horror film! In fact the film makers have thrown everything at us, even the kitchen sink, and in doing so have created an inspiring visceral experience that has left me not only wanting to talk about this movie, to discuss and explore it, but also the desire to see it again, and look at the magician's other hand, the hand he doesn't initially show us, I have a feeling there's something there reserved for the more intrigued and observant viewer.UFO plays out with five central characters, all introduced to us at a hundred miles an hour during a hectic night out; the next morning they awake to find themselves in a blackout, all power and phones are gone, without an explanation. The radio offers no clues, only static and this is where the genius of UFO really kicks in because the way everyone reacts feels very real, so real in fact, it adds to the terrifying feel of the film because you believe it, you find yourself putting yourself in the characters' shoes. What would you do in that scenario? What could you do? Do you actually need to do anything at all? Isn't it best to simply wait it out, surely the power will be back on soon, some explanation on the news will explain what's happened and everyone will go about their lives. But what if it doesn't come back on? Has something sinister occurred? Terrorism? Environmental disaster? Without the news, the internet, any means of communication, how would you ever know what's going on? I simply adore this premise and it does lead me to my only gripe about the film, the title, UFO. It's such a shame that the business has reached a point that a film of this level of sheer class calls itself, UFO. It gives the game away somewhat wouldn't you say? I'd be interested to discover if the writer originally called the script UFO or whether it is indeed the enlightened idea of some marketing expert somewhere, either way, it takes the edge of a mysterious opening that would have gone down in cult history had you no idea a massive UFO was about to turn up. Having gone on that rant, I of course realise the trailer gives this moment away! Once the city size UFO turns up, we don't look back, the film hits a sixth gear and doesn't ask you if you're coming along, it sprints up to you, picks you up, throws you in the front seat and puts the accelerator to the floor! And if you think this is going to be a Hollywood, classic JCVD style experience, think again. You've got the Hollywood production value at an independent level sure you've got the best fight sequence I've seen in years yes I'm serious there is a single shot that is one of the best I've scene how they pulled that off I'll never know you have some heart stopping shocks, one in particular rocked my soul ! and some incredible action sequences. But it's the story that shines through here, unpredictable, utterly unnerving, dark, tense and unforgiving. The film makers don't care what you want to see, this is reality amidst a Sci-Fi story, Hollywood this ain't! Whether you love UFO or despise it if you despise it, more fool you you can't argue that it isn't an original story, it's something you haven't seen before and how often can you honestly say that after watching anything?
This movie is a RIOT!It's completely crazy and a total mash up of genres. I reckon the main thing that doesn't work in the movie is that there is too many genres trying to squeeze together in one film that just doesn't have the space to fit in all of them in one place at one time! It's a shame actually because in fairness each genre is put together really well and once I was aware of whether I was watching a funny bit or a horror bit or an action fight bit I was with it and loving it. Just didn't sit perfectly as a total film. I totally got used to the path we were going <more>
down after a while and I just let it ride and once I did that I enjoyed it loads more.Didn't think a massive thing about the effects, not really up to scratch with the nowadays standards of effects but they only had a small budget. On the other hand, don't make a film called UFO with UFO's flying round everywhere if you don't have enough dollar to make the UFO's look real. But they get a pass from me because JCVD was totally kick ass, the fight scenes were extremely cool and I got a kick out of the film.
UFO Review: 8/10It's not often I'm literally left speechless when a film's credits role, in fact, I struggle to remember the last time I was glued to the seat, unable to move as the credits role because of what I've just seen. When UFO finished, I was simply stunned, I certainly wasn't finished processing the film. This is simply incredible film making, it takes low ish budget film making to a level I certainly never thought possible and yes I include 'Monsters' in that thought process. The film whacks you round the head, attacks all senses and leaves you <more>
wondering what the Hell just happened! I'm reluctant to say too much about the plot as I strongly believe this film is best viewed when knowing as little as possible, but essentially it centres around an Alien invasion and how a group of friends react to what's happening around them in order to survive through it, but that it just the basics. In case you hadn't noticed, I highly recommend you check it out!boom!
