Vanessa Redgrave was excellent and Destin Hoffman they could not have found a better person to play his character his character was strong kind and sympathetic
Under-appreciated gem (by lucy-19)
This is one of my favourite films, and not just because I am a fan of Dame Agatha's books. The actors are wonderful: Vanessa Redgrave as Agatha herself, Timothy Dalton as her rotter husband Christie sowed clues about his ugly personality through her later books and plays , the journalist in his WWI greatcoat, the guests and billiard-players at the hotel, even the troupe of entertainers in the park. Dustin Hoffman is great, and his falling for Agatha is quite believable. I love it when he recites from the Spoon River Anthology when he meets her in a grim Victorian graveyard great <more>
atmosphere and use of location . The evocation of period is spot on: all the right architecture, clothes, hats and manners. There's plenty of humour - eg when the journo is whisked away from his steak and chips, and Redgrave and Hoffman dance together. It's a complex story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. There have recently been some very lame programmes about the author on British television. Forget them, and watch this film.
A lovely, cunning, brilliantly acted mystery/romance (by runamokprods)
Wonderfully clever, and extremely well acted by Dustin Hoffman, Vanessa Redgrave. It's the imaginary tale of what happened during a real-life never explained 11 day disappearance of mystery writer Agatha Christie. Hoffman and Redgrave make a wonderful, quirky pair of almost lovers. Fun, smart, and quite touching, with gorgeous photography by Vittorio Stoaro. Finally available on DVD as part of the WB made to order line. So it's pricey, with no extras, and burned to DVD-R, so it may likely last less long than a regular DVD. Still, it's a terrific film, well worth picking up.
Excellent, but little known film. (by robert-259-28954)
Michael Apted created a truly beautiful movie in this period piece. Watching it was an exercise in restraint, beauty, and remarkable taste, each frame seemingly more beautiful than the next. Again, Ms. Redgrave delivers a nuanced but powerful portrayal of this equally powerful mystery writer, who's real life disappearance was thoughtfully imagined in this thought-provoking film. Perhaps the choice of Dustin Hoffman was a bit of a stretch, when his physical height often seemed a little incongruous combined with the extreme height of the statuesque Redgrave, especially during the single <more>
love scene. That said, Hoffman's performance was more than up for the task, revealing a degree of stoic steadfastness and street smarts that makes the entire enterprise move along quite well, in spite of its generally slower pace, which English films generally employ to good effect. Never having heard of or seen this film before, catching it on TCM was an interesting and captivating delight.
A real life mystery about the queen of mystery authors (by ozthegreatat42330)
Although this story is fictional, it is based on a real mystery involving Agatha Christie Mallowen, the most well known mystery writer in the world. Shorty after her book "The Murder of Roger Akyroyd" won a prestigious English award, Christie disappeared for some twenty days, and to this day no one knows what happened to her in that period. This story is a good supposition, however, and worthy of the pen of the queen of mystery writers herself. Redgrave is excellent as Christie, while Timothy Dalton is suitably obnoxious as the insufferable, philandering, abusive and adulterous <more>
colonel Archibald Christie, who dismissed his wife's fame and talent as a mere nothing, while carrying on an affair that he did not even attempt to hide from her. If there was a weak character in the film it was Hoffman's American reporter, secretly in love with Christie from afar, who supposedly figures out her intentions in time to stop her. It was because of this weak point in the production that I had to rate this film as less than great. Still, it is the kind of story that mystery fans the world over will enjoy. Worth a watch. Agatha, where were you really?
Interesting fictional account of the mysterious disappearance of noted mystery writer Agatha Christie. Vanessa Redgrave portrays the gifted writer whose life becomes one of turmoil when her husband announces that he wants a divorce to wed another woman.Christie disappears to a hotel with an adjoining health spa where she plots to kill herself. Dustin Hoffman is the American writer who was to interview Christie on the day of her disappearance. Thanks to the maid, he traces her to the spa and professes love for her. They dance together as he tries to get her out of her depression. To me, height <more>
was a problem here. Hoffman is shorter than Redgrave and you felt that in their scenes together.
