I cant believe the rating this has gotten! because it seems like every movie i see 5 star or lower is better then the 10 star movies. so this movie is a masterpiece! the zombies are original! the plot is amazing! the stars make this movie happen! if you watch any zombie movie. this is it. i love this movie with a passion and will see the sequel if there is to be one! don't take my word for it i watched this movie with a group and everyone went from scared to tears to happy cant beat the story with a stick. maybe a little slow at first but the bang is worth the buck. i think they give this <more>
movie to little credit because of the story but it touched me seeing deeper into it then most which seems to be my thing i took my own story away from this movie and it was unforgettable.
Greetings from Lithuania."Extinction" 2015 is by far one of the biggest and best surprises of 2015. This is simply one of the most enjoyable movie experiences i've had in this year - seriously and i saw a lot of movies .First of all, "Extinction" is not you typical genre picture. While premise and story is far from original, it is involving and interesting enough to keep your attention during it's running time 1 h 50 min, but at this running time this movie doesn't drag for a second - it is surprisingly superbly involving and sometimes moving from first till <more>
last image.Craftmenship of this film is first rate. While it's budget was only 7 millions, creators have truly knew how to spend every penny on screen - there are some good CGI and they are used with great calculation. Cinematography is gorgeous, with some truly beautiful and great shoots, like the one when camera moves above the doors, and through all floors down at the end of the movie. Acting is superb by all 3 involved - they are simply great, with no exceptions. Overall, i really do not know what people have saw when they were watching this little gem, but rating here at IMDb 5.8 is criminally low. I love this genre, but it is not your typical zombie apocalypse flick - it has it's heart and soul so if you are looking for some brainless and bloody horror zombie flick, you might be a bit disappointed by "Extinction", and although it features both, it has so much more to offer. "Extinction" is THAT rare little gem, and it is now one of my favorite movies in 2015.
Very immersive gem not to be missed (by jason-dante)
When I saw this listed on the TV guide I thought, like most, *yawn* another zombie movie... but how wrong I was. The movie is a character tale with impressive acting and clever dialogue not to mention the detailed sets/locations. The opening scene immediately sets the tone for the film and you cannot help but emphasis with the characters. While watching I actually forget this was a zombie flick as I was so immersed in the lives of the 3 central characters. I wholeheartedly recommend this movie on so many levels.
A return to the core of the genre (by siderite)
At first I thought "Oh no, not another zombie movie!", but from the very first minutes I got hooked. The beginning scene of the film is great and reveals the overall theme of the movie: it is not about why or the how, it's all about the who.Extinction is rather badly chosen a title, because the scope of the film is not global, but very localized, very human and personal. It feels more like a play, with a total of four roles that are worth mentioning. It is not about a problem that someone solves, but goes back to the core of the zombie genre, the pure survival of the group of <more>
individuals in a hostile world. The creatures themselves are very secondary with the focus on the people, with complex and well written characters.Bottom line: this film deserves a lot more recognition than the IMDb rating seems to indicate. It is not a masterpiece, but certainly a work of art, not another recycled "run, shoot, run" clone. It lasts for two hours and it is a slow paced character driven story. So glad to see well written stories from time to time.
Not to give away any of the plot, just to comment on the quality: it is not quite Dawn of the Dead or even Diary of the Dead, but it is very much better than the low budget zombie films. The acting is good, the non- zombie story line is engaging and the zombies aren't bad.I am told I cannot submit this without ten lines of text, so I have to flesh out the review a bit, but not with padding words. So I will expand by noting that the acting is good enough to support a dramatic film, the horror aspects are good enough that we felt genuine stress watching the film. There were many parts where <more>
the tension builds and plenty of times as well where a good sudden scare caused us to jump.
I watch lots of movies that just quickly fades away from memory but I thought this movie was unique.. it was scary whilst you are also crying to the sad back story ..I haven't seen something that evoke so many complex emotions in me in a long time.. There were some powerful scenes ..although the most of the movie is ran by 3 actors it very much hooks you from onset and who can deny what a great actor Matthew fox is ..he is really great in this..also the little girl is so amazing as well.. If I had to compare with something, I d have to say something between I m legend and dawn of the <more>
dead. I would definitely recommend it if you are feeling up for a good suspense with a drama context..
A human drama set against the zombie apocalypse (by Rob_Taylor)
I was very pleasantly surprised by this film. Pretty much everyone is tired of the zombie genre by now but no one seems to be doing much to try and change up the formula.Enter "Extinction", where the main story focus is on the relationship between the two main male leads. After a brief intro scene setting the zombie apocalypse stage, we are sent years into the future and the two men, though living next door to one another in their survivalist enclave, have nothing to do with each other. What has happened in the intervening time to drive them apart? Well, we learn that during the <more>
course of the movie, naturally, but it was nice to see that, although there are zombies in the movie, they aren't the focus of the story, merely the backdrop. This type of movie works really well. The mystery surrounding the two men's falling out and the relationship with the little girl keep you guessing for a while. Of course, the "twist" isn't so wild or subtle that you don't guess it really early on, but it is nice, nonetheless. The zombies, of course, though absent from much of the film, reappear at length, and we are treated to some nice moments of film making that put me in mind of older films. There is suspense and some nice moments of tension until they are finally revealed but there are a few too many jump scares.Ultimately, the human drama enhances what would otherwise be a boring zombie movie and makes it into a very decent film indeed. The two main actors involved, Matthew Fox and Jeffrey Donovan, handle their roles very well and give very good performances. That said, if you prefer your zombies slow and shambling, or your zombie flicks to be fast paced and violent, then this one may not be for you. On the other hand, if you want to try something a little bit different in the zombie apocalypse, then give it a go.SUMMARY: More human drama than zombie-fest, though there are plenty of them towards the end. Well worthwhile if you want something more than "Pew-pew-pew! Die Zombie Die!" to watch.
I've been compelled to write this review after reading the former ones. As this film is quite remarkable in many things I can only understand the very bad reviews as spurious stuff. Why I say that comes below: Very good performances. Matthew Fox, Jeffrey Donovan and the girl Quinn McColgan are perfect in their work. You really get into the movie with them. There's always a narrative nerve that never decays. The photography is usually evocative. The characters are elaborated and likely. They evolve as the screenplay unfolds. The movie is, in general, entertaining and the action scenes <more>
are well filmed. Maybe is not the most original sci-fi movie but no doubt it's a more than decent one.
Such a rare thing as a good zombie movie (by Ctrl-Alt-DL)
If you are looking for a good zombie movie look no further. This little gem is a character driven film with just the right amount of action. This is not an action movie with zombies or a cheap independent gore- flick. This movie actually has some substance. Which can't be easy in the zombie genre.Big thanks to the cast and director for taking the genre "seriously". This makes it a good movie and a great zombie flick. I was even a bit surprised by the two main actors ability to cast away their regular TV acting skills and leap into film acting. Who knew they could push themselves <more>
to this level. Hope to see more of this in their future endeavors.
