4.8 overall rating??? makes no sense... (by jasonrenzi)
look... i really don't understand you people.... nor do i understand what exactly it is you think you need to get out of a cinematic experience... this is a romantic comedy...taken within the context of this genre, i really can't see how it could have been much better...the cast was superb, the script was derivative but totally entertaining and highly amusing, the directing was very much above average... i just don't get it.... i simply can't see how a film of this type could be markedly improved upon... lighten up and try to enjoy a film for what it is...this movie will break <more>
no new ground, it will not win any awards, it will not resolve the world's pain... it is a fun, entertaining romantic ensemble comedy that will divert and amuse if you only allow it to do so... a 4.8 rating for this film is pretentious and hyper-critical...period.
I just could not see McConaughey and Parker together in a romantic situation. I could not even imagine McConaughey in a comic role and did not believe I could picture Parker as anybody but Carrie, or maybe Annie! What a surprise! I was completely swept up in their characters and this fast moving, well written, romantic comedy. They, and all of the rather large supporting cast were outstanding. This is a must see if only to see Terry Bradshaw as you have never seen him before. I am watching arguably the best NFL quarterback ever, making me forget that completely. Kathy Bates turns in a <more>
performance 180 degrees from her role in Misery.Again I could rely on the dependability of the local critics. They gave this a C- which was a sure sign that it had no redeeming qualities other than being a formula run of the mill escapist romantic comedy but very entertaining by my standards . By definition, they and the Academy can only rate a move highly if it has a "message" that is usually negative and often depraved. If you were pleased with the Academy 2005 best movie selections, avoid this movie. On the other hand if you want to forget all the problems of the world and just have some good laughs and walk out feeling good, this should be your cup of tea.
I, as a Film Student, think the critics were way off in their assessment of this movie. I enjoyed it. The star talent was dead on; the comical witty-ness of it was fantastic, and all around a good movie. I think those critics who gave this movie need to get off of their high horses, and sit down and watch a movie with the common people, instead of their own private viewings and see what a REAL crowd thinks of it. In my book, I didn't hear a bad comment about the movie as I walked out of the theater, and while the movie was playing, all I heard were laughs, OHHH's, and agreement with <more>
this good movie. All around, I would suggest this movie highly, you won't be disappointed!
The trailer was boring and I was sure I didn't want to see the movie. I am also not a big fan of Matt or Sarah. Luckily for me there was nothing "good" to see for date night out with the wife. So we decided to see "Failure to Launch". It was possibly the funniest movie so far this year. Great characters, great story, and loads of bust out laughing situations. Terry Bradshaw and Kathy Bates are crazy/funny and actually parents I would love to have. The rest of the cast, especially the character of Kit, are perfect for the parts played and extremely funny. This is just <more>
what it is supposed to be, a fun romp. Enjoy this movie and don't take it seriously like the guy from Canada.
I agree this won't win any major awards or impress the critics. I went expecting a relaxing time and got exactly what I was looking for. I laughed, giggled, and smiled while watching this movie and enjoyed hearing the laughter from those around me in the theater. This, in my opinion, is what makes a good comic film, romantic or otherwise. Kathy Bates and Zooey Deschanel performances were fantastic. Terry Bradshaw was a delightful addition.Enjoy this movie for what it is and relax and laugh. The critics just don't get romantic comic movies and probably never will!
Hilarious (by QueenBee_523)
I thought that this movie was very funny. Although, you should see this only if you are looking for humor, not for plot. Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker were amazing together! Zooey Deschanel was brilliant as Sarah Jessica Parker's best friend, she was so witty and hilariously sarcastic. McConaughey's best friends in the movie were very funny as well as believable. The entire theater was shaking. There were elderly people, moms, dads, teens, and preteens there to see the movie and it was obvious to me that all were enjoying this incredible film. It was nice to have a <more>
romantic comedy that wasn't a chick flick as well, the story was told mainly from McConaughey's point of view. Kudos to everyone who had a part in the making of this movie!
Being a huge SJP and Matthew fan- I of course went to see the movie. I was shocked and really pleased to see how much camera time Zooey Deschanel got. She was my favorite character in the movie- by far. I wasn't expecting that at all. Her facial expressions and deep voice were perfect for the quirky character she played. So now I am a huge fan of her's. Back to the movie. The plot was a little predictable duh ,but was truly a pleasurable one. I didn't go to the movie to be deeply moved- but I did go to see a great light-hearted film with an amazing cast. And I had success. I love <more>
Kathy Bates- so it's a plus that she's in it. Terry Bradshaw is naked at one point.....so rate that as you will. But all in all- a good time was had. Go see it.
You would think with this all-star cast of dramatic actors and actresses, including the formidable Kathy Bates and Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker, that this film would take on some weight. Instead, the film is very light and frothy and a cute, if quirky, farce about Matthew as a 35 year old who does not want to leave his nice mother and father, including Terry Bradshaw, the legendary Hall of Fame quarterback. Matthew, as usual, generously shares views of the fine curves of his shirtless body. Also easy on the eyes are his nice looking buddies, who provide him with a sort of <more>
bachelor support group. Enters Sarah, who is in the business of motivating the typical grown-up male child to belatedly leave their parents' house, a fairly familiar modern phenomenon. So, Sarah is hired by Kathy and Terry to get Matthew out of the house. And, Sarah succeeds, but not in the way she plans, which causes some temporary hurt feelings and misunderstandings. Then, while Matthew angrily retreats to his sailboat, Terry decides to convert his son's old room into a "naked room," which surely will be the end of Terry's naked appearances in a major motion picture. Terry was statuesque in his quarterback days, but that was a generation ago. Then, the viewer finds that Matthew and Sarah are, unexpectedly, really falling in love with each other, with a little help from their friends and family. Other cute comic elements involve the biting of Matthew by little animals, including a chipmunk, a dolphin, and a lizard. And, then a mockingbird is the occasion for another farcical sequence, which includes surely the only human to bird artificial resuscitation in film history. This film does not have the comic genius or timing of films like American Pie or even an average Carol Burnette television sketch. But, it has its own easy charm with plenty of eye candy, beautiful cinematography and a good sporting effort by this group of participants, who nevertheless seem more suited to weighty dramas such as Titanic or A Time To Kill, in my opinion.
Mom and Dad try to get their son to move out by hiring a girlfriend (by dmalkire)
This was a very funny movie. It's about a 35 year old played by Matthew McConaughey who still lives at home with his parents. His parents hire Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays a counselor of sorts, to date him so he'll want to move out. What starts out as a job soon develops into love until one of McConaughey's pals catches Parker with another client. This is very similar to "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" and "Hitch". Terry Bradshaw and Kathy Bates do OK as McConaughey's parents, but the real star here is Zooey Deschanel. She deserves a best supporting <more>
actress nod for her portrayal of Kit. She simply stole the show. From the moment she is introduced she is off and running about being annoyed by a mocking bird that keeps her up at night. This culminates in 2 excellent scenes: the first in a sporting goods store where the diminutive Kit decides to try and buy a 12-guage shotgun and one shell to dispose of the bird. Saying any more would give this scene away and I don't want to spoil it for those who have not seen the movie. The second is where Kit and McConaughey's other pal who, by the way, have begun a romance of their own shoot the bird with a bb gun and then try to revive it. All in all, this was definitely worth going to see.
